Amazon

Aside from the story there a re great effects and many panoramic scenes. There are lots of bubbles, an abyss and maybe some Ruskies. If you like all those submarine movies this fits in well. Again it is the people action and reaction that make the movie. Don't wait for some slam-bang surprise to appear out of no ware or you will have misses the story.
This is one of those movies that have to grow on you and then you will watch it again.

The first act follows some underwater oil rig workers led by Bud (Ed Harris) as they're called on to investigate a lost submarine which crashed during the prologue. They're joined by SEALs whose leader is Coffey (Michael Biehn). Biehn, often the hero in Cameron's films, gives a darker performance here, humorlessly pulling rank on Bud's crew. Bud's estranged wife Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is also on board, and their relationship gives The Abyss its romantic subplot. I kind of liked how Lindsey's character was handled; she's very ambitious and treated like a bitch by those around her, but the film doesn't make a big feminist point about this. She's painted fairly realistically, her good and bad qualities allowed equal screen time.
The mystery of what she and her colleagues find builds powerful suspense; Cameron's craft is Hitchcockian at times. The film's main problem, however, is the mystery's solution; it's steeped in sentimental moralising. Cameron explains too much and in doing so concludes what was an adult thriller with a climax akin to a Disney film's. I'd have preferred a quieter, subtler ending, but then that isn't Cameron's style. Even his darkest works, like Aliens and Terminator 2, are blockbusters which tell big stories. The difference, however, is that those films kept their plots and tones consistent, whereas The Abyss veers off into fairy tale territory, poking holes in itself until it's barely recognisable. That said, the climax does provide awesome imagery; I'll watch this film again just for its visual splendour.
A note on the DVD: my copy isn't really equipped for a widescreen television, so the picture was surrounded on all sides by a lot of black space.
