This whole album is a gem, although I bought it mainly for Ellens dritter Gesang (aka "Ave Maria"). There are a few other performances of Schubert's original version (that is, with piano accompaniment and in German--a translation from a poem in English by Walter Scott), but most performances seem to be with a giant orchestra and/or using a text in Latin that has nothing to do with the poem Schubert chose to set to music. Two aspects make this album special. First, the piano used here is a fortepiano, a replica of a piano built c. 1800. The sound of a fortepiano is very different from that of a modern piano, and some people won't like it. Personally, I love it. It has a delicate, tinkley sort of sound that feels right for the small, cozy settings in which these art songs would have been played. (Why is the modern piano called a piano? It should be called a forte.) The second special aspect is the soprano Johannette Zomer's performance, which also feels "right" for these songs--not big and showy and operatic, but tender and intimate.

Franz Schubert wrote a large number of songs, which have earned their place among the classics of the Romantic repertoire. This disk presents settings of poems by Goethe and Walter Scott in which young women express love and longing. The most famous of these is "Ellen's Third Song" from Scott's poem "The Lady of the Lake", better known by its first line, "Ave Maria". Interspersed with the songs are four of Schubert's solo piano works.

Johannette Zomer sings clearly and expressively. Her pure tone and very restrained use of vibrato enhance the melodies rather than obscuring them, as a more operatic style would do. The pianist, Arthur Schoonderwoerd, plays more than competently, but the instrument, an eighteenth-century piano similar to the one Schubert used, takes some getting used to for listeners accustomed to modern pianos -- the tone, especially in the higher registers, is rather tinny and sometimes almost resembles a harpsichord. To me, this detracted from some of the more dramatic passages, but you can listen to the samples and judge for yourself.

I don't normally pay much attention to CD packaging, but this one deserves a mention. The interior of the fold-out case is attractively marbled in the style of an antique book endpaper. The case features a painting by Caspar David Friedrich, "Moon Rising over the Sea", which, while it doesn't relate directly to the songs, reflects the Romantic mood of many of them.
