Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber created a lasting monument in this series of fifteen sonatas depicting the story of Jesus. The unique element in this music is the technique called scordatura, deliberate mistuning of the violin strings for unusual effects. But listeners will be more aware of the its intense nature. Biber doesn't strive for beautiful melodies most of the time; he has a dramatic story to tell, which he does with remarkably imaginative effects. For a sample, try The Ascension, which hardly sounds baroque at all. If that gets you, you'll continue to enjoy the series. There have been very good recordings of this music by Reinhard Goebel and Marianne Ronez. Manze is an excellent musician in ordinary baroque music, but he really excels in wild and crazy pieces (as on his amazing Tartini CD. His realizations of this radical set, in collaboration with the excellent keyboardist Egarr, go straight to the head of the field, and he even adds a brief demonstration of how scordatura works so you don't have to wonder any more. --Leslie Gerber

アンドルー・マンゼ（Andrew Manze 1965-）のヴァイオリンによるビーバー（Heinrich Biber 1644-1704）の「ロザリオのソナタ」全曲。2003年の録音。CD2枚組。

2005年のレコード・アカデミー賞音楽史部門を受賞した録音であるので、今さらという感もあるけれど、2016年に再発売版もリリースされたので、あらためて記してみたい。この録音は、学術的価値、演奏技術、音楽性などのあらゆる観点で、聴き手に深い満足感を与えるものに他ならない。

ビーバーの大作、「ロザリオのソナタ」は、ヴァイオリンと鍵盤楽器による15のソナタと、ヴァイオリン・ソロによるパッサカリアの全16部分からなる連作で、その詳細は以下の通りとなる。

当盤では、リチャード・エガー（Richard Egarr 1963-）が伴奏を務める。鍵盤楽器として使用しているのは、第1、第2、第3、第4、第6、第7、第9、第11、第13、第14、第15番の11曲のソナタでオルガン、第5、第8、第10、第12番の4曲のソナタでチェンバロとなる。また、第12番ではチェロによる通奏低音が加えられている。当盤ではアリソン・マクギリヴレイ（Alison McGillivray）がチェロを担う。

ソナタの副題を見てわかる通り、この連作は、キリストの生誕から聖母マリアの戴冠までを描いたものであるが、その表現のために、スコルダトゥーラ（scordatura）と呼ばれる調弦法が用いられていることが、当曲集の大きな特徴となっている。一般にヴァイオリンの4つの弦は、低音側から5度音程に調律するため、下からG3、D4、A4、E5となるが、ロザリオのソナタでは第1番と最後のパッサカリアのみが通常の調弦で、他のソナタはそれぞれ独自の調弦により奏でられる。このスコルダトゥーラは16世紀前半から使用し始められ、18世紀半ばまではよく行われていたとされる。ロザリオのソナタは1676年ごろに作曲されたとしており、当時としては一般的な手法とも言える。

ビーバーは非常に高名なヴァイオリニストで、技術面でも一頭抜けた存在だったとされる。そんな彼の代表作に相応しく、ロザリオのソナタは高度な技術を要するもので、ダブルストップ（一度に二音以上の重音を弾く）を含む非常に急速なパッセージが多くあるほか、それまでの奏法では使用されなかった音域も使用されている。

これらのソナタの特性を、マンゼは実に見事な技法で繰り広げている。その醸し出す重音の雰囲気は絶妙で、例えば、ソナタ第1番の終楽章や、ソナタ第14番の冒頭楽章などを聴いていただけると、とてもわかり易いのではないだろうか。

とにかく音色に艶とバネがあり、全体的な柔らか味のある響きは、マイルドで、特にオルガンのサウンドと合わさったときの神々しい光を感じる音色は、忘れがたいのである。このマンゼの繰り出す柔らなトーンは、例えば彼の弾いたバッハ（Johann Sebastian Bach 1685-1750）のコンチェルトなんかとは、まったく異なる印象で、私には、同じ人が弾いているとは思えないほどなのだけれど。それは、曲に沿った演奏を真摯に心がけた結果なのかもしれない。

いずれにしても、固有の調弦で彩られた15のソナタを、鮮やかな手腕で弾きこなし、かつ巧妙なバランスで、隅々まで行き届いた表現で透徹した、実に完成度の高い芸術として、聴き手に音が届けられるのである。楽曲のテーマである神への信仰を別としても、音楽自体の美しさは、多くの人を感動させるに違いない。

そして、終曲の独奏ヴァイオリンによるパッサカリアの感動的なこと。これは、楽曲自体が素晴らしいのだから、マンゼのような名人に弾かれたら、一流の芸術となるのは、当然と言えば当然なのだけれど。

以上のように、推薦をためらうところのない素晴らしいアルバムであるが、特典として、末尾に3分強ほどの、マンゼ自身によるスコルダトゥーラに関する解説が収録されている（英語）。実際にヴァイオリンで音を出しながらの解説なので、こちらもリスナーの知的興味を満足させてくれるもので、良いサービスとなっている。

ビーバーのロザリオのソナタを聴くのは初めてだが、メロディだけで言えば必ずしも一般受けしない玄人向けのバロック音楽と言えるだろう。個人的にメロディでの官能的な響きを求めるのであればビーバーよりもコレッリをお薦めしたいところだ。しかし、この盤で聴くロザリオのソナタは限りなく官能的であり、メロディを感じさせてくれる。それもやはりマンゼ氏の懐の深い演奏技術に言えるものだろう。彼の演奏は完璧な演奏技術を誇りながらも聴き手に優しく響くように実に抑制された心地よい演奏を聴かせてくれる。このロザリオのソナタを私のような素人でも心地よく聴かせてくれる懐の深さがあると言えよう。惜しむらくは輸入盤であることから解説書が読めないところだろうか。

Questo doppio cd è un'ideale introduzione alla musica di Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644 - 1704), uno dei massimi geni della musica barocca pre Bach/Händel/Vivaldi.

Le sue 15 Sonate del Rosario, o dei Misteri, suddivise in tre gruppi da cinque a formare proprio il ciclo dei Misteri del Rosario (i Cinque Misteri Gioiosi, i Cinque Misteri Dolorosi, i Cinque Misteri Gloriosi), per soli violino e basso continuo (il violoncello compare in un solo numero), sono uno dei primi capolavori di musica puramente strumentale nella storia dell'Occidente (vennero composte attorno al 1676). Rappresentano, anzi, la massima espressione della tecnica della scordatura applicata al violino, ossia di un'accordatura diversa da quella normale, in modo da poter realizzare inconsueti effetti sonori o superare difficoltà tecniche. Biber, che oltre ad essere un grande compositore era anche un incredibile virtuoso dello strumento, riesce a sbalordire per quanto riesca a far suonare timbricamente ricchi e pieni dei pezzi in cui oltre al violino compare il solo sostengo armonico del basso continuo, affidato in questa meravigliosa incisione all'organo od al clavicembalo. È, peraltro, una ricchezza musicale che non suona mai fine a se stessa, ma sempre al servizio dell'espressività della parte che si sta eseguendo, secondo la teoria degli affetti barocca: un singolo pezzo deve esprimere un solo sentimento, che sia allegria, malinconica, gioia o dolore. Mai nessun altro aveva portato tale tipo di estetica ad un livello così alto. Ma Biber sa spingersi ancora oltre, quando nei quasi 10 minuti della passacaglia conclusiva elimina persino il basso continuo e lascia che sia solo il violino ad esprimersi. Dopo di lui verrà Bach con la celeberrima ciaccona, ma fino ad allora l'assolo di Biber non verrà mai superato.

Andrew Manze è l'interprete perfetto per questo tipo di musica, non solo per l'abilità tecnica, ma soprattutto per l'affinità naturale con l'idioma barocco. Richard Egarr è l'accompagnatore perfetto, sempre presente ma mai invadente. I suoni targati Harmonia Mundi sono eccellenti, caldissimi ma pure dotati di rare chiarezza e trasparenza.

Questa è forse la miglior registrazione in commercio di un capolavoro che oggi è certamente non più negletto come decenni fa, ma che merita di esser ancor più conosciuto e che ogni appassionato di musica classica deve avere.

[In memory of Bob Zeidler who introduced me to this marvelous recording of this marvelous work, and who died April 2, 2005.]

My good friend and fellow Amazon reviewer Bob Zeidler put me onto this set months ago but it took me a while to take him up on his recommendation. I was a little skeptical, to be honest. One reason is that Zeidler is himself a violin player, and not only that he is an aficionado of 'fiddling' (I mean fiddling like in Scottish folk music, country, bluegrass and the like) and enthusiasm for that genre has somehow never developed for me. So, when he went on and on about how this fellow Manze was playing music by an 18th-century composer whose style in some ways presages 'fiddling' by almost two hundred years, I was not as interested as perhaps he had hoped. But I bit the bullet, bought the set, and was immediately charmed and moved by not only the music but the astounding performance by Andrew Manze. My goodness! This is seriously good stuff here. I guess you could say that my endorsement is for the non-Baroque specialist, the non-violin music aficionado. I adore lots of Baroque instrumental music, including Bach's solo violin partitas and sonatas and the like. But Zeidler is right, there is little about this music that sounds like any of that. It is from its own world, and a weirdly seductive world it is. Please read his review for in-depth details about the music itself, the use of scordatura, the general form of this set of Sonatas, and so on. In fact, if you haven't already read his review, stop reading this one and go read his, because his is the one that has real meat in it. My comments, on the other hand, are simply a long way of saying 'Wow!' I know Amazon is not particularly fond of reviews that simply say, 'Wow!' but in this case it needs to be said.

As to Manze's technique, have no fear, this guy could play anything. He makes the Baroque violin--in his case a c. 1700 violin labeled Amati--stand up and do tricks. His intonation, including extraordinarily tricky double-stops and arpeggios, is unerring. It is beyond me, frankly, how anyone plays with scordatura tunings, but one would never know that's what he's doing until you realize he's playing notes that simply wouldn't be playable with ordinary tuning. Further, he brings out the emotion in these extremely emotional works. As for his accompanist, Richard Egarr, who plays both harpsichord and organ alternately, I can say, as a keyboard player myself, that he contributes mightily, but sensitively and unobtrusively (as the composer obviously directed) to the whole, a feat that is harder than it may sound.

Wow! If you don't believe me, go listen to some of the sample tracks Amazon has so graciously provided! Go listen, for instance, to Track 4 on CD 1. It'll knock your socks off.

The one negative thing about this recording is it comes in one of those silly Harmonia Mundi book-like cases which you can't close properly. Look beyond the packaging though for a real treat. Having seen Manze and Egarr perform some of the Rosary Sonatas live at the BBC Proms this summer, I also came to this recording with high expectations and wasn't disappointed. Biber can be lively and fun to the point of being comical at times, but not this time. This is not the time. This is a sensitive interpretation of these extrodinary pieces almost to the point of being prayerful.
Unlike some other performers, Manze plays all fifteen sonatas on the same 1700 Amati instrument, each requiring unique re-tuning of the instrument, known as scordatura. For the uninitiated, this process is explained in a short track at the end. Andrew Manze compares the pain he puts the violin through with each of these uncomforatable new tunings to a spiritual journey culminating in the Crucifixion and Resurrection. This analogy makes sense. This recording is both inspired and inspiring, Manze and Egarr at their best.

My review may not be as long as some of the others here, but it is just as emphatically incredulous. Biber is a recent discovery for me, and Andrew Manze's recording of these sonatas is marvelously beautiful. The musical effects in some of the sonatas are beyond what I would have expected for the composer's time period; they seem almost experimental, but at the same time so grounded. I am not a music scholar in any way, but I have heard it said that improvisation was actually a big part of the baroque style, so maybe I should not be surprised at the creative twists and turns, and unusual (to me) techniques and sounds written into these sonatas. And the idea that each sonata has a different tuning probably makes them incredibly difficult, as well. Although I really do love all styles of classical music, I think my heart clings the closest to the ethereal and worshipful style of Bach and his contemporaries. So finding this previously unknown to me composer, with these 'mystery of the rosary' sonatas, was wonderful. I have listened to them over and over, at times actually weeping at the beauty of them. Andrew's explanation of the tunings in the last track of this 2 CD set was a really nice touch and really helpful, too. I highly recommend this!
