First of all, what's with that title? "Soubrette" refers to a certain kind of Broadway character who plays comedic second banana to the romantic lead (think Oklahoma!'s Ado Annie, Guys and Dolls's Adelaide, etc.). Blossom Dearie certainly has the kittenish voice and dry wit to carry such songs as "To Keep My Love Alive" and "Too Good for the Average Man." More in her wheelhouse, though, are light swingers like "Rhode Island Is Famous for You" and "Always True to You in My Fashion." Somehow, hearing Blossom Dearie singing straight songs in front of an orchestra--rather than swinging at her keyboard--almost seems like a waste. But cancel that thought. Any Blossom Dearie is worth hearing. --David Horiuchi
