ルービンシュタインの演奏は、過度の華美な装飾やテンポルバートを抑えたオーソドックスなスタイルだが
楽譜に忠実ながら、そこから溢れんばかりの情感を魅せてくれる名手だ。

音の色彩も多彩で見事。早いパッセージは玉が転がるよな響き。
強弱にもメリハリがあって情熱的、メロディは流麗でこの上なく美しい、
至高のバラード&スケルツォ全集だと思う。

元々、録音が素晴らしく、通常のCD版のリマスター版でも十分楽しめる。
SACD、CD共に、ルービンシュタインのブレス（息遣い）が聞こえてくるほどクリアーな音だ。
　
あくまで個人的な聴き比べによる感想だが、
DSDリマスターによるSACD版と通常のCD版との違いを探せば、
SACD版の方が、中低温がより明瞭かつ厚みのある太い音で響くことかと思う。

一方、CD版の方の中低温は高音部のメロディに隠れがちで、
やや平べったい音に聞こえる。

また、SACD版はマルチ・チャンネル（3チャンネル）なので、
センタースピーカーから、メロディ部分を担う中高音域の音がしっかりと聞こえてくる。
しかし、2チャンネルで聴くと中高音部はやや不明瞭に響くように感じる。
この点、同じ2チャンネルならCD版の方が高音部はより明瞭だ。

また、SACD版は、全体に角の取れたやや丸みのある音の響きに感じる。
その分かも知れないが、CD版よりもやや残響が多いような気もするし、
明瞭さもやや欠けているようにも感じる。いずれにしても些細な違いだ。

とにかく、最近のリマスター技術にはびっくりさせられるが、
ルービンシュタインの音楽の素晴らしさそのもに変わりはない。
このアルバムは、ショパンのバラード&スケルツォを堪能するのに最高の、
そしてこれ以上ない至高の演奏だ。

　　アルトゥール・ルービンスタインは、1959年にRCAにバラードを四曲全部録音した。さすがにその録音は、上質のアナログ録音やデジタル録音と比較するならば、奥行き感に欠けるきらいがある。それにも拘らず、そんな些末なことに気が回るのは最初の二〜三分で、あとは全く気にならなくなる。
　　しかし、この演奏と録音にとって最大の魅力は、巨匠ルービンスタインがショパンの傑作ピアノ曲をどう演奏するかにあった。ショパンのバラードは天下名曲であるので、名演奏にことかかない。事実、これまで批評子は、ミケランジェリがDGに録音した演奏を聴いて楽しんできた。ミケランジェリが弾くその第一番と第四番はなかでも優れていた。第一番の立ち去った人物が再び戻って来るような終結は、とても驚かされた。さらに、第四番の慄然たる終結も何度聴いても飽きなかった。
　　一方、ルービンスタインは、やや早めのテンポで軽快に弾ききっている。ミケランジェリの解釈とは別の解釈で悪いとは思わない。しかし、今のところ批評子の耳にはミケランジェリの解釈が隅々まで浸透していて、未だにルービンスタインのバラードを十分に楽しめる訳ではない。
　　他方、スケルツォでは第一番の後半を告げる高音のタッチには心臓の鼓動が思わず高まる。また、名曲第二番では、ルービンスタインの名技性がグランドマナーで前面に押し出され、聴き映えがする。
　　また、スケルツォの録音は、バラードのそれよりも音の抜けがよく、別の日の録音であるように思われる。

色々なピアニストが、様々なショパンを奏でる。ポリーニの正確無比なショパン、アルゲリッチの、ツィマーマンの、ブーニンの、リグットの、それぞれのショパンがある。しかし、これ程美しく奏でられたショパンは殆ど無いのではなかろうか。やはり、最高のショパン弾きの一人だと思う。

他の方も触れているが、録音も素晴らしい。古い音源だとちょっと心配、という向きにも文句無くお勧めできます。

晩年のショパンは、音は小さいながらもあらゆる表現法で弾けたそうですが、ルビンシュタインもまた、その様なピアニストだと思います。

２０世紀最高のショパン弾きといわれたルービンシュタインによるバラードとスケルツォ。約５０年前にＬＰでリリースされた「リビング・ステレオ」のＳＡＣＤハイブリッド化シリーズの１枚。
演奏は５０年近くにわたって決定盤として支持され続けてきたものですから間違いなし。音質もオリジナル・マスターから丹念にＤＳＤマスタリングされたもので、ＣＤ音源をコンバートしただけの‘なんちゃってＳＡＣＤ’とは比べ物にならないほどクリア。
とにかく、この１枚にＬＰ２枚分のマスターの情報がほぼそのまま入っているわけですから、良い時代になったものです。

Rubinstein was a big man, I attended a concert at Carnegie Hall almost 60yrs ago, but his touch on the keyboard, strong when called for forte, was so delicate as well. I have been playing it everynight in bed to relax me as well as Glenn Gould's Brahms 'Intermezzi'. I was a student at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, and would see Glenn from time to time in the Library. I was in AWE, so I never spoke to him. There is a plaque outside the modest building where he lived on St Clair West and also the Glenn Gould Studio in the CBC Building, where outside there is a statue of Glenn sitting on a bench. Thank you, I will be ordering again.

Many consider Artur Rubinstein the perfect Chopin interpreter, and often he was. This is another case when the popular notion is correct. We have the Polish-born pianist performing the 4 Ballades and 4 Scherzos by Frederic Chopin on an RCA SACD. I listen always in two-channel SACD.

Rubinstein gives superb performances of the Ballades. No. 1 is majestic in breadth. No. 2 is lovely with incredible power when called for. There are no idiosyncratic tempo fluctuations, no sentimentality, no see-what-I-can-do showmanship. No. 3 is a raving beauty with such grace and delicacy when appropriate but with power at hand when needed. This is the way Chopin should be played. The finish is the final word on that Ballade for all time. No. 4 is my favorite Ballade. Rubinstein gives it that melancholic playfulness and open vulnerability that Chopin intended. Rubinstein allows us to share his intimate experience with each Ballade as he plays. The intensity is maintained but not unleashed until just the right moment. Rubinstein keeps his tone carefully rounded even in louder passages, not an easy feat as too many pianists demonstrate. What's more, he always demonstrates his total comprehension of the long view of each Ballade.

The Scherzos are a different animal than the more intimate Ballades. From my perspective, the Scherzos tend to be less lyrical and innocent, more dependent upon strength and technical skill and more sober and aggressive than the Ballades. Rubinstein meets the challenge with room to spare. His piano seems to have a slightly harder tone than in the Ballades that is most easily heard in the loud treble passages. My favorite of the Scherzos is the complex and extensive No. 2 where Rubinstein demonstrates that he has capacity for aggressive playing with retention of his exquisite ability to shape a simple melody although it is temporally surrounded by more intense and aggressive mood. No. 3 is an example of a Scherzo in which Rubinstein plays at the extremes of mood and intensity. Chopin wrote some sections to glisten and sparkle while in close proximity there is an emphatic rush of heavy chords. Rubinstein negotiates these acute turns in the music with ease. Not all pianists do. Scherzo No. 4 is probably the most Ballade-like of the Scherzos and the most melancholic and lyrical, as well. Rubinstein caresses the Scherzo to bring out its natural beauty.

The soundscape of these SACD performances is ideal. The piano does not have the nth degree of natural sound, but this is a function of age that you see in many older recordings. Of course the performances are uniformly astonishing. I believe these are the definitive performances of the Ballades and Scherzos, and I give the album MY ABSOLUTE HIGHEST RECOMMENDEATION!!!!!

della prova famosa di Zimmerman e che posseggo assieme a quella di Pollini. Qui Rubinstein riesce a tirar fuori le note da un universo parallelo fatto di mestizia, ardore e dolce sconforto. Chopin rivive e ritorna trionfando sulla sciatteria di tante interpretazioni che lo vogliono piagnucolante e depresso.
Una grande prova d'autore... storica... da incorniciare nei nostri cuori per sempre.

This disc, recorded in 1959, is a good example of the success of the SACD sound as applied to a single sole instrument. The original issue was rather wooden as a recording but that problem has been totally removed in this remastering. We are now left with uncompromised and masterly Chopin playing.

There have been almost countless recordings made of this repertoire over the last 50 or so years, but it is no exaggeration to observe that there have been very few to rival the majesty, the brilliance and the total empathy that Rubinstein displays in this works. Like many other collectors, I am not short of good versions to compare this with, but for me, if I were to only choose one Rubinstein disc to take with me to some distant desert island, it would be this one. There can be no one definitive recording of any music, but this one must be considered as one of very few to choose from.

I would therefore suggest that this disc, in its remastered format, deserves the strongest recommendation to be included in any short-list of desirable recordings of these two sets of works.

Further Note: The 10 disc box set published in 2010 with 24 bit remastering of the whole collection offers a significant improvement on sound in every way on all discs. This can be confidently stated as I own both and have been able to do an A/B comparison. That box set must now be the best possible purchase although this particular SACD disc still remains the best of all. The same performances in the box set are much improved but not as much as this one example.
