幼い頃を思い出すように純粋かつ幻想的なサウンド
それでいて情感豊かに何故か冷めている

個人的に大人になって何か満ち足りない感情を埋めてくれました
なかなかない発想だけに思い入れのかなり強い作品です
このアルバムを手にとって本当に良かった…

音と音の隙間に対する意識が非常に高く、
余白の使い方が巧いから聴いてて無茶苦茶心地酔い。
一つ一つのフレーズが何にも邪魔されず、ストレートに、
伸び伸びとこちらへ届いてくる。
それが無理せず自分たちの出来ることを最大限に活かした結果、
なのかは知らないが、全く嫌味が無い。
それは今作に限らず全作品に通底する姿勢だ。
加えて歌もかなり酔い。
感情の抑制と解放のさじ加減が異常に的確だ。
作品毎に若干の色の違いはあるが、どこからでも入れるし、
音楽をバックミュージックとして捉えている人にも、
本気でリスニングする人にも、
どちらにも平気でお勧め出来る。
そんなバンドは、実はそういない。

サンディエゴの素敵な2人組、
RobとZachによる
タッチ＆ゴー移籍後の3rd。
独特のリズムを刻むギター・サウンド、
切なさたっぷりの繊細なメロディ、
胸に染みる唄心、メランコリックなハーモニー。
しなやかにうねりまくるピンバック節。
じわじわ沸き上がる微熱感覚。
穏やかなのに、昂揚してくる力強さ。
溢れ出る幸福感。
POP職人2人の奇跡の融合。
ハードコアを通過してきた
ピュアなPOPミュージック。
本当に素晴らしい。

2004年に購入してから、ずっと聴いている。何聴こうかな？と思うとコレが出てくる。ずっと聴き続けられる名作だと思います。暗い部屋で聴いても、電車の中でもどこでもピンバックの空気にやられます。

　pinbackの音楽は「聴けば聴くほど良い」と言われる。それは背伸びをしない純粋なバンドである事の証明だと思う。特にこの３rdアルバムを聴いているとそう思う。
　切実だけど、重くもならず、楽しそうに演奏するロブクロウの姿が目に浮かぶ。明るくもなく暗くもなく、ただただ深い。居心地が良く、底の見えない穴の中。pinbackの音楽はその穴の中から、その穴を横切る人に向けて鳴っている。聴き手の気持ちを束縛もせず、付き放しもしない。
　この３rdアルバムはpinbackが大好きな人の期待を絶対に裏切らないと思う。やっぱりpinback大好きだと再確認させてくれる傑作だと思う。

Bien que le groupe Pinback, c'est à dire le duo Rob Crow/Zach Smith, soit resté confidentiel en France, il s'est taillé une belle réputation dans l'indie rock américain en 15 ans d'activité et seulement 5 albums studio publiés et entièrement enregistrés et mixés par leur soin dans leur home studio.

Ces trois derniers albums réussissant même à se classer dans billboard américain.

La carrière musicale de Pinback est à l'image de leur musique : elle est méticuleuse et perfectionniste. Chaque album de Pinback est comme le précédent, et leur musique se reconnait dès la première mesure, mais toujours en progression : chaque album de Pinback est meilleur que le précédent. Toujours plus construit, plus travaillé, plus complexe, comme si les deux musiciens de San Diego étaient plongés pour l'éternité dans les abîmes d'une vaine recherche de la mélodie parfaite.

Et forcément, le temps entre deux albums s'allonge lui aussi inexorablement.

Summer in Abaddon, leur troisième album, est marqué par le temps, comme thème musical central. Dès le premier morceau, No Photo Blue, le tempo est donné. La guitare de Rob Crow et la basse de Zach Smith vont s'agencer comme les rouages d'une horloge avec une précision métronomique. Le tempo ne variera quasiment pas de tout l'album. L''entrelacs complexe des mélodies superposées se développe de morceau en morceau, inexorablement, organisées comme un ruban de Moebius qui se déroule en boucle perpétuelle et seul le fade out en sortie de chacun des morceaux y met un terme. Le son Pinback est un son brut, sans effet, sans distorsion. Un son maîtrisé et proche de l'acoustique, avec ses frottements et sa richesse harmonique : une basse, une guitare, une batterie, deux voix. Et une rythmique réglée sur un 4/4 d'horlogerie.

Summer in Abaddon est un excellent album, central dans la discographie du groupe, et marquant leur évolution millimétrée sur 13 ans de carrière.C'est l'album qui entame la complexification progressive du son de Pinback. Plus minimaliste sur les deux albums précédents, ici le nombre de pistes augmentent, et les mélodies s'intriquent de plus belle. A écouter, à découvrir.

The last time I can remember getting this excited about a musical discovery (I always think they are my secret discoveries and then I go on Amazon and find so many others have had similar personal secret discoveries) was The Samples "No Room" and Josh Joplin's "Useful Music." I have had Pinback's "Summer in Abaddon," on repeat play since Amazon sent it may way seven days ago. I really haven't wanted to listen to anything else finding new discoveries and additional layers to the music with each listen. These guys are solid musicians and have made some incredibly textured music.

I think of albums from my listening history that were the only things I listened to for weeks on end and (this dates me) U2's "Under a Blood Red Sky," AC/DC's "Back in Black," Rush's "Moving Pictures," and REM's "Automatic For the People" all come to mind...not to mention Def Lepard's "Hysteria" because that one is kind of embarrassing in hindsight. Not that Pinback's music parallels any of those in style or sound but that it strikes a similar chord of repeated listen desire. For those unitiated let me take a wag at what this music is about...it is hard to categorize. There is a little of old REM vocal interplay, there's a little of the Clash, a little of the Police in places, some of the Stone Roses vocal stylings, and a few of the 80's pop new wave punk in places...for some reason the Motels come to mind.

These guys hail from San Diego and are headed up by Rob Crow, who I've learned isn't new on the music scene. Rob Crow has been a part of Pinback for awhile (at least four CD/EPs) and has been a frontman for some group called Thingy and another called Heavy Vegetable, and yet another called Optigonally Yours. He must be a big fan of one of my favorite bar games...inane creative band names.

What makes this music so great? Each song has this repeated flow and has continuity from song to song with uniqueness and originality to each piece. The vocals and instrumentation are multi-layered beautiful and seethe with an understated intensity. It takes the best parts of indie underground and sugar-spun poppery and meshes them together into something truly unique and powerful and bottomline infectious. There is so much here. From the opening track, "non-photo blue," and it's Police-like guitar chop, to the Motels/Berlin Synth and killer refrain of "Sender," to the repetitiveness experimental/minimalist mathematic and Tripping Daisy vocals of "Syracuse." Then there's the Modest Mouse-ish "Fortress," that belongs on radio play in heavy rotation and on to the head bobbing cool breeze of "This Red Book," sounding like Papas Fritas in places. There's the vocal interplay worthy of the Beach Boys or old-style REM in "3X0" with some beautiful piano highlighting the up and down of muted picked guitar and bass. It's hard to say they saved the best for last because the album is all so solid all the way through but Pinback caps it with "AFK," that shows some fierceness and pop-punk shouting, "Protect, Embrace, Engulf, Protect, Enslave, In-love...remember the summer in Abaddon."

I'm waiting for the buzz to catch up with the brilliance of this music but secretly hoping it can remain my find (and a few others). Word will get out...I used to think the Pixies and Throwing Muses were my finds but others now know and appreciate. Pinback will get some mass recognition...it's unavoidable. Don't take my word for it, stick this one in the shopping cart and get addicted like moi.

This vinyl remaster is a great package for a good price. Nice bonus with the original 7” single limited release. 12” Vinyl is a beautiful tone of earthy green. The sound is great, wide soundstage, tightness and warmth. Pinback’s CDs sound awesome but their vinyls sound even better.

superbes compositions qui l'air de rien possèdent une richesse qui se découvre aux écoutes multipliées; découvert ce groupe il y a trois mois et leurs cds, le premier et celui-ci passe sur ma platine tous les jours, les chants sont trés envoutants; à découvrir sans modération!
