West Bruce & Laing'７４年発表のライブアルバムです。
検索しても全然出てこないので、市場に出ていないのかと思ってたら、登録されているバンド名がおかしくなっていたのですね。
出来ましたら正式な名称(West Bruce & Laing)に直していただきたく、お願いします。
アルバムの内容ですが、ちょっと地味な印象を受けます。
レスリー・ウェストとコーキー・レイングはもとマウンテンのメンバーですが、このアルバムのような長いアドリブやジャムセッションで実力を発揮するタイプではなく、バンドのアンサンブルの中で時間をかけて作り上げたフレーズやおかずで、楽曲に花を添えるタイプだと思います。
ですので、このライブではジャックブルースと上手くかみ合っているとは思えず、特に２曲目の「The Doctor」などはスタジオ盤のほうがバンド全体のノリと迫力が感じられるので、本作を聴くとちょっと期待はずれに思えます。
ジャックブルースもスタジオ盤の方が音の厚みとノリが良いように思うのですが、ベース弾いている人が聴くと違うのかもしれません。
また、３曲目「Politician」はクリームでおなじみのミディアムテンポのブルースハードですが、サウンドに隙間があるように感じるため、もしマウンテンのスティーブ・ナイトがいたらピアノで絡んで面白いのにと思ったりします。
私はレスリー・ウェストとコーキー・レイングはマウンテンでのプレイの方が魅力的に感じますが、このアルバムについてはマウンテンに対する先入観がなければもっと楽しめたかもしれないと思います。

Westの歪んだギターとBruceのうねるようなベースの絡みが壮絶。ぞくぞくするカッコ良さです。ライヴならではのLaingのドラム・ソロが"Play With Fire"、Bruceのベース・ソロも"Powerhouse Sod"で堪能出来ます。Bruceの場合、ソロというより曲という方が合っているかも？

クリームと比較すると「カスイ」とか「ショボい」とか「お猿の太鼓」とか悪口も聞きますけど、そりゃあクラプトン&ベーカーと比べたらいかんです。
ただし、ジャックブルースのプレイは素晴らしいし、政治家はグッバイクリームのものよりも、こちらの方が好きですね。
ジャックブルースはこの後、1975年頃までしか、Gibson EB-3 を使用していないため、この粘っこいベースの音を聴くには、Free(アンディ・フレイザー)または佐藤研二氏以外にないと思われ、その意味で大変貴重な音源です。

last WBL record as live - it is a pity never reissued with more songs - Power sod is from 1971 in fact, but the rendition is historic, great quality and fantastic performance, great band with only 2 solo LPs. Legend - get Mountain as well.

Keine Ahnung, wie man dieses Meisterwerk des harten Blues Rock als uninspiriert, lustlos oder gar gequält bezeichnen kann. Für mich zählt diese Scheibe mit zu den besten Live Werken aus den 70ern.
Als leidenschaftlicher Bootleg Sammler mag ich es natürlich überhaupt nicht, wenn man Live Scheiben "zusammenstückelt", und das auch noch recht deutlich zu hören ist. Genau das ist ein Problem dieser Platte.
Trotzdem macht Live `N`Kickin sehr gut deutlich, das die Herren West, Bruce & Laing in einer Klasse für sich spielten. Sowohl Cream als auch Mountain sind sind Bands, die sich live nie an ihre eigenen Studiovorgaben gehalten haben, sondern gerade mit ihren Improvisationen ihren unnachahmlichen Sound prägten. Mit West, Bruce & Laing trieben sie diese Kunst auf die Spitze. Vielleicht ist auch genau an diesem Problem diese geniale Truppe zerbrochen? So starke Einzelmusiker (Persönlichkeiten) in das Korsett einer Band zu zwängen konnte eigentlich nicht gut gehen. Leider, leider, denn gerade von Jack Bruce hätte ich mir mehr Material in der Hard Rock Richtung gewünscht.
Zurück zu dieser Platte.
Natürlich mit einer guten halben Stunde viel zu kurz, aber allein die unglaubliche Hammerversion von "The Doctor" macht den Kauf lohnenswert.

WBL have often been unfairly compared to Cream, and except for the Jack Bruce/Felix Pappalardi link and the fact that both bands were a power trio format, I think this is unfair. They had their own sound, and this excellent live outing showcases them in all of their glory. The sound quality is excellent, and there are only 4 tunes on the album, because of their length (which begs the question which vault the rest of the live tracks are languishing in -- this should have been originally released as a two album set), and they include:
Play With Fire: The Stone's classic is given a heavy metal finish, with Jack and Leslie trading off on vocals and Corky doing an inventive drum solo.
The Doctor: The live outing of one of the studio tracks on their debut album, Why Dontcha', featuring searing slide work by Leslie.
Politician: Better than the live outings by Cream, no kiddin'.
Powerhouse Sod: This track features an absolutely mind-bending bass solo by Jack, which I found both surprising and long overdue given the fact that he never really did any bass solos when he was with Cream, except for a brief one on one of the takes of "Steppin' Out" from the Cream at the BBC CD.
The bottom-line is that if you are a fan of Mountain, Leslie West, Jack Bruce, Cream, or any in your face heavy rock, you will eat this up with a spoon and write the label to demand that they release the rest of their live inventory.

Want heavy metal and great artistry/talent - go no further- they are the quintessential combination. A trio- Supergroup! Essentially short lived powerhouse rock band - 1972- Sound is not as clear as today's productions- but they really were more of a live tour band and the texture of the sounds and production of the album lends itself that way- I have the original album and this CD is faithful to that. Very cool!
