Unfortunately, they cut only one, for the seldom-seen 1969 Jacques Demy film Model Shop, but what a triumph it is: a magical blend of John Locke’s eerie keyboards, the soaring guitar of Randy California and Jay Ferguson’s impassioned vocals and percussion, backed by the rock-steady bass and drums of Mark Andes and Ed Cassidy. It’s mindboggling that something as dazzling as the Model Shop soundtrack—recorded by the classic Spirit lineup— has been languishing unreleased in the vaults for over 35 years! The stuff of longplaying-legends and vinyl-myths, this full-length album was recorded in late 1968, but the completed master was shelved before release. I am totally bias when it comes to my favorite group, Even though a lot of these songs did not make on the original 4 classic releases, anything done by the original group is great stuff. John Locke ,jazzy piano, really shines on this one, Ed plays great jazzy drums,rock steady bass by Mark, Jay sings and plays congas,and what can you say about Randy California,great smooth guitar notes ,all kind of sown together with the same thread of genuis. The songs are arranged beautifully, defying any categories. Producer Lou Adler sure got it right with these talented musicians, Standout songs are Now Or Anywhere,Model Shop II,Mellow Fellow,Fog.The SPIRIT NATION would sure wish an original group, live recording would be available soon, Live at the Texas International Pop Festival would be a good one, are you listening Lou Alder?

This is Spirit the way I love them most. Dreamy fogged in California Coast dream time jams. I could listen to this CD forever and not get tired of it. It's not how most people recognize Spirit but for me it's a big part of why I am so drawn to them. Not that I don't like their freaky rock and roll side but this stuff gets under my skin like noting else.

It is to be added to early Spirit's previously (or nearly so previously) unreleased material. Despite being in mono the fidelity was good and carouseled from my other Spirit albums without me noticing any difference. It went well following the version of The Family That Plays Together cd that has some bonus material at the end (adds tracks with vocals). I think two instumentals on Model Shop are also on Clear and I skip them if I am following Model Shop with Clear. Model Shop is mostly instrumentals. If you have all the other early Spirit albums you should have this one too.

This album has a really jazzy feel in part due to the drummer Jack Cassidy's jazz backgound. The music also straddles pyschedelia and is quite trippy and a cool laid back listen. Spirits music was always eclectic and this is in the same vein. Recommended.
