Paul Motian(dr)、Bill Frisell(gt)、Joe Lovano(ts)。ECM1902番。

全員がソロ並みに弾きまくるというフリージャズ的なアプローチの作品。
でも、このメンバーでそれをおこなうと全く違う世界が形作られる。

Joe Lovanoの朗らかな歌声。
Bill Frisellの牧歌的なフレーズ。
Paul Motianの空に抜けていくようなドラム。

ここにあるのはカフェのBGMでかかっていてもおかしくないような日常的な肌ざわり。
でも、なにひとつ噛み合っていない。
なんて穏やかなカオスなんだろう。

心の整理ができていなくて、でも何もしたくないとき。
そんなときに、そっと寄り添ってくれるようなアルバムです。

Recorded April 2004, at NY. Joe Lovano (ts), Bill Frisell (g), Paul Motian (ds).
意表をつくような三者の組み合わせが、絶妙のカラー・コーディネーションを生み出した。
幻想的で、静かで、ゆったりとして、優しげで・・・。聴いていると音楽に包み込まれるようだ。
ロヴァーノがいい。歌心にあふれ、表情豊かで太く、しかも深い音色。
リズム無きリズム、効果音的なモチアンのドラムもナゼかしっくりとし、フリゼールの不思議音響ギターも幻想味を添える。ときに彼の個性であるカントリー風、ブルーグラス風のアプローチが出てくるのも面白い。
表題曲"I Have The Room Above Her"は、今までほとんど取り上げられたことがないような、古いミュージカルの中の一曲である。ジャケット写真の表と裏で物語を象徴しているところも凝っている。
静音ＪＡＺＺ愛好家も大満足の一枚。

ビル・フリーゼルのエフェクターの効いたギター。私は青山のブルーノートで彼のライブを聴いて以来、時折どうしても食べたくなる癖のある料理に似ていると思う。ひとりきりの土曜日の深夜、クレルのアンプに電源を入れ、灯りを落として鳴らしている。アルバムでは『east/west』が一番気に入っているけれど、この演奏の余韻は心に響く一枚だ。ポール・モティアンのアルバムのなかであるという抑制が、逆に彼の演奏の素晴らしいエッセンスを引き出している。

聴いているうちに、私は欧州の北の街をひとり歩きながら、別れた昔の彼女を郷愁しているひとりの男になっている。

Il Trio di Motian (con Frisell e Lovano) è il Trio per eccellenza. Irripetibile, inimitabile, immenso. Più passano gli anni dalla dipartita del batterista, più si ingigantiscono i dischi ove ha suonato. Le formazioni da lui guidate , i talenti da lui scoperti e le sie composizioni. Devo aggiungere altro?

Exceptionally clean performance by all musicians. Very lyrical and melodic. Atmosphere is great, relaxing, but not trivial nor overly melancholic; I enjoyed their performance and presented material very much. It is done in the best tradition of ECM production. I can't find a weak spot in the entire album. My favorite tune is "Odd man out" because of added energy, especially Paul Motian's drumming that is fantastic match for the tune. The only slight criticism I may find in the fact that the entire album is done in a pretty much same mood and there is not that much variation in a melodic sense and general approach between different tunes. So, either you like them all, or... For me, I enjoyed pretty much entire album.

The trio of Paul Motian, Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell had been playing and recording since 1981. Recorded in 2004, this is Motian's first album as leader for ECM since 1984. The opening track 'Osmosis Part 111' sets the tone for the early numbers, conveying an atmosphere of melancholy without undue sadness. In fact the tranquillity and space produce the opposite effects of peace and beauty. This is achieved by the wonderful creative unity of three supreme musicians with an uncanny understanding.

Paul Motian's drumming always sounds busy even when sparse and subtle, never playing to any set rhythm other than that generated by his empathy and support of the other trio members, especially difficult without bass or piano. Bill Frisell sounds dreamy with his understated playing, splintered notes and the resonance of his well-described 'twang'. He complements Joe Lovano's full and rounded soulful tenor whether playing duets, in unison or accompanying. Lovano is magnificent generating warmth and feeling whether playing straight ballads, the Kern-Hammerstein title track, for example, or in the freer format of 'The Riot Act'. He is in total control of the marvellous sound he produces. The beautiful and memorable music produced on this remarkable album is all about control, freedom, unity. An outstanding record.

The reason I got this album is simply because of Bill Frisell. I have all of his solo albums and I have a bunch of albums where he was a session guitarist, and have been a huge fan for a couple of years. I simply can't get enough of his beautiful, textural guitar style. The man can quite simply....play anything he likes and get away with it. Not saying that what he plays is out-of-place, but he has such a strong distinctive style it's hard not notice or take note.

"I Have the Room Above Her" is what I consider to be one of the trio's best work to date. It's so moody and dark, yet it's very soothing and beautiful. Really mellow and laid back. Kind of skimmers along and allows alot of space in the music, which I love music to have an "open" quality anyway. I know when I compose something I like to leave alot of space in there so it can allow for someone else's style to really come to the front.

I also enjoy the playing of Joe Lovano and Paul Motian. I believe Joe Lovano is one of the greatest sax players that ever lived. His tone is easy on the ears unlike alot of other sax players. Paul Motian (who's almost 70!) is unbelievable. To say he sets the pace for the music is an understatement, because he's the backbone or the glue that holds this music together.

This album is a great purchase for anyone who's into these three amazing musicians or anyone who's into good melodic jazz.

After several listenings this one still doesn't come together. Yes, these guys are the best in the business and they have done this before (notably with "It should have happened a long time ago"-perhaps the better outing).

They are still better than most at the dreamy weaving of textures and measured freedom this kind of music aspires to, and maybe the short fall here demonstrates how hard that music is to accomplish. Or maybe I just have more late night music than I have late nights. But IMHO, in the clear light of day this comes off as rather astute noodleing that leaves me feeling musically underfed.
