Sounds cheesy? It's not-Duke, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Cootie Williams and the band swing like magic on Chim Chim Cheree; a Spoonful of Sugar; Supercalifragilsticexpialidocious, and more. Hard to find and just about impossible not to love!
The Mary Poppins score is a good one, but the treatment here definitely enhances it. This is a record that deserves to be more widely known. The score shows off the various qualities of this late Ellington ensemble. Very highly recommended.
Das 1964 eingespielte Album ist war weiterer Versuch Duke Ellington's, mit Pop-Hits die Popularität seiner Band Mitte der 60er Jahre zu erweitern. Ähnliches hört man auf den Alben "Ellington `65" und "Ellington Ž66", mit mehr oder minder prächtigem Erfolg. Erstaunlicherweise ist Duke Ellington's und Billy Strayhorn's Bearbeitung von Walt Disney's "Mary Poppins" recht gelungen, trotz der Mittelmäßigkeit des Musical-Scores (die Titel hatten nun wirklich nicht die Klasse von Gershwin, Porter oder Berlin). Jedes Stück wird zum Feature für einen der großen Solisten der Band (Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Cootie Williams, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton, Lawrence Brown, Russell Procope), die Ensemble-Passagen werden "ellingtonisiert", und schon klingen "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Chim Chim Cheree", "The Life I Lead," und "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" richtig jazzig, insbesondere das letztere wird durch Paul Gonsalves "noodling" im Wechsel mit der Band aufgewertet.
