楽曲の方もファストなキャメロットHM(オリジナルが強いのでこう呼びたい)や
2. When The Lights Are Down
4. Soul Society
10. The Black Halo

Kamelot
ただ残念ながら、今年の4月にVoのカーン氏が脱退しました:;

This album and band are truly the greatest if you are into progressive orchestral metal. I have seen them 7 or 8 times live and they just keep getting better. This album is a mind-trip (420)

CD of the millennium

Can you think of a song that has "that part"? A particular riff or vocal hook, maybe kicking the song into high gear. A part which is executed just right, so that your spine tingles, and you just think... "wow". It's totally electrifying. That's when you know that a band has (temporarily) mastered the art of songwriting. Usually these times are few and far between. Then there's Kamelot's The Black Halo. Along with various other fine qualities, almost every song on the album has at least one of those parts.
Leaving the realm of the abstract, let's see a few specific reasons why Kamelot stands above the rest. First of all, the vocals by Khan are absolutely amazing. He doesn't give into one of the biggest crimes of progressive/power metal: wailing. While well-respected singers like Geoff Tate and James LaBrie (along with numerous wannabes) often try too hard to hit the ear-piercing upper upper upper register, Khan shows incredible melodic ability while staying in a pitch range that isn't painful to listen to. Also, Kamelot features none of the synthesizer cheese that sinks much of the competition (Andromeda and Sonata Arctica come to mind). All of the keyboards are tastefully done, including some beautiful piano work. Finally, Casey Grillo adds power and rhythm to the songs with his drumming while using the double bass machine gun drumming only sparingly. "When the Lights are Down" is the only song where such drumming is noticable. Better vocals and keyboards than prog, and everything better than power metal. These guys shouldn't even be classified, since they lack the assumed flaws of those genres.
Ok, now you know why Kamelot didn't screw up. Here's how they truly became something special:
1) Guitars. I haven't mentioned this instrument yet, since quality guitar work is fairly essential to success in this style of music (in other words, most power/prog bands don't mess it up). But of course, Kamelot is not to be bested. Thomas Youngblood never seems to run out of inspiration for killer guitar riffs, although they don't overpower the rest of the music. If you want pure lightning speed, just look to "Nothing Ever Dies". Or maybe you want a chugging march, the obvious choice would be "March of Mephisto". I could go on, but take my word for it, every song (minus the interludes and Abandoned) has a memorable guitar part that rarely takes a back seat- this is true metal!
2) Power. These guys really love to combine the bass drum with a crunching guitar riff. It creates a strong rhythm that you can easily bang your head to, while knowing in the back of your mind that it still isn't caveman music. The title track is a good example. This album is what I was hoping for when I first heard the term "power metal".
3) Atmosphere. The choir chants in the background add an epic (but not cheesy) tone to several of the songs, as do the keyboards. And the band seems to have a total understanding of the human mind, knowing when to build up to a climax (Memento Mori does this amazingly), or drop off and give the listener moment to catch their breath. The latter often being done with the interludes.
4) Depth. When I first listened to this album, "The Haunting" and "The Black Halo" were my immediate favorites. The incredible chorus of the former, and the pounding rhythm of the latter made them easy to spot as great songs. But with time, I began noticing how great the other songs were, too. Each in time making it to the top of my playlist for at least a while. And every few listens I pick up on a new layer to the song that wasn't immediately noticable.
Add all of this together and you have, in my opinion, the greatest album of the new millennium. The only album to challenge it is Dream Theater's "Images & Words", which rather than try to compare to The Black Halo, I will simply dub the best album of the 90s. And I would definitely give this one the thumbs up over their previous release, epica (although some may dispute that), which was also a good album but didn't draw me in as much. This stuff just can't be beat. If I were pressed to choose the best songs, I would go with "Memento Mori", "The Haunting", "Moonlight", and "March of Mephisto". But there isn't a single weak track on here.
