Amazon come sempre perfetta.

MASTERPIECE-EXPANDED AND REMASTERED!

This review is for the 2011 digitally remastered and expanded deluxe 2 cd Import edition of the late British singer's 1971 solo debut L.P. The 2nd disc contains 12 bonus tracks including 5 demos which were previously available only in her lavish 19 cd box set in addition to BBC recordings and 4 live in concert tracks. YES! Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny, a precious voice from heaven who tragically died from a fall in 1978, which is now some 35 long years ago. This release is indeed a welcome treasure for all who know and appreciate the only woman who ever won consecutive Melody Maker polls for Best British female singer for 2 consecutive years, which were 1970 and 1971. I'll never forget opening the gatefold cover that displayed Sandy sitting in a apothecary's shop surrounded by dried flowers, herbs, and spices. I still have that warm vinyl treasure and also many memories of thinking about what the cover meant, as I listened to her beautiful voice carry me away. I already have the single disc Import from 2005 and was not expecting a marked difference in the remastered sound but here I sit ecstatic while I listen to Sandy's beautiful voice sounding even better than ever before. Sandy recorded this beauty only after she had departed Fairport Convention, as well as her somewhat aborted tenure with her next group, which was Fotheringay. I had 1st heard Sandy's voice with the excellent L.P. "Liege & Lief", when she had been with Fairport, and it is significant to note that "Liege" was voted the greatest Folk L.P. ever! Now, the bar had been raised to the stratosphere, and Sandy's NSG&TR L.P. was initially given quite favorable reviews but mysteriously did not record the sales that it so rightly deserved. I guess that one could say that it took a while for all of the unknowing to discover the beauty in the rather melancholic nature of the tunes. Disc one opens with the rather dark tone of "Late November", which perfectly captured that feeling of the late month's nature. Mr. Richard Thompson recorded along side with Sandy for most of the tracks, featuring both electric and acoustic guitars, as well on his faithful accordion. Other members of Fairport, such as Gerry Conway & Pat Donaldson, also accompanied Sandy on the L.P. Other themes on the L.P. included Sandy's fascination with maritime themes, oceans, and loss. In fact, Sandy had initially thought of the title "Slapstick Tragedies", before setting on North Star. Sandy herself quoted "Most of my songs seem pretty traumatic....I can't sing happy songs". Other exceptional tracks included on the 1st disc include "Blackwaterside", "The Sea Captain", Bob Dylan's "Down In the Flood", the masterful "John The Gun", "Next time Around", "The Optimist", Brenda Lee's hit chestnut "Let's Jump the Broomstick", "Wretched Wilbur", the title track, "The North Star Grassman and The Ravens", and the beautiful finale, "Crazy Lady Blues", where Sandy declares "She's A Crazy Lady, Today". Bonus tracks on disc one include a demo of "Last Time Around", a duet with Richard Thompson, "Walking The Floor Over You", which was a big Country-western hit written by Ernest Tubb, where Sandy and Richard totally change to fit their style, an excellent instrumental version of "Lord Bateman", and a very nice duet sung with ex-Fairport member, Ian Mathews, titled "If You Saw through My Eyes". Disc 2 highlights include demos of "Wretched Wilbur", "Crazy Lady Blues", a vocal of "Lord Bateman", and a stirring version of "The Sea Captain". These demos sound even better than the recorded versions that were released. The BBC sessions included are "Late November", and a rousing take on the traditional tune "The Lowlands Of Holland". The capper here is the 4 tunes that were recorded live by Sandy, herself, on either acoustic guitar, or piano. They are breathtaking versions captured live "In Concert", at The Paris Theatre on March 25, 1972. Included are TNSGATR, the title L.P. track, "Brutontown", "Next Time Around", and yet another stunning version of "John The Gun". I cannot stress enough how truly beautiful these live versions are! All In All, this 2 cd set is indeed a treasure trove for all lovers of the voice of Sandy Denny! Along with the very nicely packaged 2 cd set, we get an excellent 14 page, very well annotated booklet written by Patrick Humphries, which include a track-by-track listing of all personnel involved in this treasure, as well as some very rare photos of Sandy, herself. The running time of each disc is rather generous, with disc one containing 15 tracks with a duration of nearly 58 minutes, while disc two contains 12 tracks with a duration of nearly 50 minutes. So, there is much here to savor for all lovers of the majestic voice that Sandy owned! MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! SMRZ!!

Sandy Denny - Crazy lady blues

It seems like only yesterday listening for the first time to the "Battle of Evermore" from Led Zeppelin IV when the female voice on this duet with Robert Plant cast a spell which has proved enduring. It was the only song Led Zeppelin ever recorded with a guest vocalist although Sandy Denny went on to produce even greater glories. 1971 saw both the release of the Zeppelin classic and Sandy Denny's first solo album "The North Star Grassman and the Ravens" here given the deluxe treatment by Island records in the form of the original record now digitally remastered, plus bonus tracks including already released BBC recordings, 5 rare demos that are on the humungous and expensive box set and one unreleased recording: an instrumental version of Lord Bateman.
To be honest if you already own the excellent 2005 remaster the sound quality here seems to these ears to be broadly the same and with the only "new" track being an instrumental many will already have these recordings. For those however approaching Denny for the first time this is an excellent starting point. During this period she was at the top of her game both vocally and in terms of songwriting and "North Star Grassman" contains a number of her greatest songs.
While the joyous cover versions of "Lets jump the broomstick" and Dylan's "Down in the flood" are a treat it is inevitably the slower songs that stand out. The gentle plaintive country of "Crazy lady blues", the blissful autumnal melancholy of "Late November" and her great take on traditional folk of "Blackwaterside". Her own obsessions also loom large not least with the oceans which played out in so many of her songs including the glorious "Sea Captain" (the demo here is actually a better version) and the aching beauty and imagery of the mystical title track with the Paris Theatre live version particularly poignant. The album also contain three versions of the remarkable "Next time around" which the one of todays great singers Joanna Newsom has described as "carving out some sculpture .....it's just unbelievably ambitious and interesting and just reaches such incredible heights. My personal favourite of the three remains the simple piano demo which is devastating in its simplicity with Denny's voice touched by the angels, although Harry Robinsons string based arrangement is very fine indeed. Such a contrast again is manifested on the album version and demo of "Wretched Wilbur". Robinson's strings on the first version give it a lush texture but the English folk rawness of the guitar based demo provides an altogether harder and more honest edge.
In 2005 the perceptive music journalist Jon Harris attempted to explain why lesser talents have been posthumously feted, but Sandy Denny remains a decidedly cult interest. He went on to interview "the Guv'nor" Ashley Hutchings one of English folk music's most pivotal figures who argued that Denny "needs to be re-evaluated. She wrote a kind of song that's very rarely written now - emotional, musically interesting, sung really well - serious songwriting. She was head and shoulders above the rest. And she remains so". These are very fine words and with the passage of time you sense that the process of revaluation is gathering pace. As "North Star Grassman and the Ravens' proves Denny is a songwriter as musically important as Judee Sill, Laura Nyro, Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell, thus no record collection is complete without her.
