Yes indeed what a surprise actually several surprises: 1- original line up of our 4 favorite members 2- Disk 1 starts of good with all original songs keeping up with vdgg style not as good as the old days but still much better than other prog rock bands getting back together nowadays. 3- My biggest surprise is disk 2 where they are only jamming without any singing, wow this is the best stuff they`ve ever done and for over an hour, the new sound technology in there comes up with fantastic stuff they couldn`t have done before, and boy do they ever make the most of it. I just wish they could keep going like that.....
I haven't listened to disc 2 yet because I can't stop listening to disc 1. Peter Hamill's voice has lost none of its intensity, in fact, his voice is a musical instrument itself. It's like the band stepped into a time capsule from the 1970s to emerge today: raw, frenetic and invaluable. We can only hope that they will release the live disc from their reunion tour. Buy this CD. Throw disc 2 away, you'll never miss it.
I'd been vainly hoping for a reunion of my favourite band for decades - little expecting that it would ever happen, but after 30 years of silence since their final parting of ways, they return! If this CD is the result of a weeks playing together - then I am blown away! (saddened too that so many years have gone by without them) The whole album displays a fresh, loose feel. Its jazzy, its noisy, its groovy, its weird: It's van der Graaf Generator sounding like they never went away! Almost medieval at times, this is certainly not a minimalist modern reinvention of their unique style of music - rather it's a raucous improvised ensemble of great musicians rediscovering the spark they had together on albums such as "Godbluff" and "Still Life" from the mid 70's. The first disc contains 6 new songs, and the second; a collection of awesome improvisations that weave complex moods of random devising.
Now with "added press coverage" that sees them moving into a potentially wider area of exposure, hopefully this is just the start of the VdGG reunion. What with the approaching gigs and the forthcoming re-issues of their classic Charisma albums- remastered with unearthed treasures from the vaults, there's never been a better time to be a VdGG fan. I can't wait to see them live!
