Never in his solo career has Stephen Malkmus so brazenly showcased his eclectic tendencies as he does on Face the Truth. We all know the ultra talented Indy icon is as complex as they come. Those following his prolific career from Pavement through his solo albums know he can intelligently mix up many musical styles while always managing to keep true to his core abilities. But rarely has Malkmus delivered such diversity. The electro opener, "Pencil Rot," stands oddly alone and the album kicks into gear at track two. "It Kills" opens like a plucky pop track from Pig Lib and turns Television-esque as the solo kicks in and lifts off into a beautiful, fuzzy landscape. "I've Hardly Been" unfolds with a Spanish, Bizet-laden rhythmic drone that slowly fragments into a blissfully deconstructed, discordant mess. And lo-fi heads will agree that it doesn't get much better than the eight minute "No More Shoes"--which strangely recalls disco-era Kiss (hear Dynasty's "I Was Made For Lovin' You") and the guitar swaps of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. Fans of Malkmus and Pavement alike will not be disappointed. --Rob Bracco

なんと表現すればいいのか、カッコ良さとか美しさとかいう普通の感覚で表現するのは難しい音楽。へなへなでへろへろな音の波が怒涛の様に押し寄せては自分を魅了する。フォークなサイケ、ジャケットも意味が分からない。。。でもいいんです、このカラフルミラクル不思議な世界が。オススメは#6『No More Shoes』素晴らしすぎて感動です。見事なまでのローファイな感覚が魅力の温かい愛のあるアルバムですよ。

これは素晴らしい。色眼鏡なしに聴けとは言わない…てかペイヴメントの残像を消すこと自体間違っている。だからこそペイヴメントやアメリカインディロックを愛聴する者なら聴いてほしい!
バンドを率いたミュージシャンのソロ転向に伴う、加齢やルーツミュージックへの接近はレイドバックする印象があるのは当然だし、実際そうだ。でもそれこそ『FACE THE TRUTH(真実に向き合うこと)』で良い作品を生み出すことこそ評価に値するのではないか。スティーヴン・マルクマスが前作のザ・ジックスのクレジットからソロ名義に戻したのはこういう意図があったと思う。
まずひねくれたメロディセンスやノイズギターはペイヴメントのそれで、ソングライティングは全く錆び付いてる様子がない。チープな電子音が絡み合うことで軽薄な印象を残してるのがまたひねくれたスティーヴンらしい。
3.「I've Hardly Been」はトム・ヨークもフェイバリットに挙げるほど!ギターに顕著にみられるブルースやフォーク、カントリーの要素はここに来てレベルアップしていてヘロヘロな歌声とのコントラストが良い。4.「Freeze The Saints」はペイヴメントの「Range Life」を彷彿とさせる超泣きメロ!6.「No More Shoes」は8分もある大作なんだけど、聴いていて飽きない。展開が面白い!7.〜10.辺りを聴いてわかってくるのが恐ろしくポップに振り切ってる。子供って無垢で純粋なかわいさを持ってるのに、時折悪意や憎たらしさをもたらす…そんな子供が奏でるロックみたいな印象
詞には相変わらずシニカルな所が表れているけど訳があっても日本人にはちょっと不可解かも…ボートラ抜かした最後の最後11.「Malediction」のテーマが『拒絶』ってのがまた面白い
ちなみにアートワークも2,3枚目のペイヴメントに近いものがある

　酔いの勢いでなけなしのお金を叩いて購入。
よかった。ペイブメントすらちゃんと聴けて
いないけど、マルクマスの人間味がもっともっと
見えたような一枚。リスナーに挑戦しなくたって、
ちょっとださい（彼がやるとださくない）カントリー
風の曲書いたっていいじゃん。もうみんなマルクマスが
90年代そして21世紀を代表するアーティストだって
知ってるもん。
　大人になってるんじゃなくて、ちゃんと成長してる、
そんな感じがしました。ちょっと偉そうだけど、
大切にそして誇りをもってCD棚に並べたい一枚だと
思います。

ペイブメントの時から、すごいマルクマスは好きなんですけど、今回はサウンドコラージュの幅が広がってる気がします。それはペイブメントの時には極端に感じる事が出来なかった。歌メロが元々すごくな人なので、長く聞き続けていけそうな感じです

I've said it before--those who ignore malkmus's latter-day efforts simply because he isn't the hippest kid in the block are missing out on some truly rewarding music.

Face the Truth continues the 'transition to adulthood' begun on Malkmus's previous two solo efforts; the songs here continue in the more mature/serious nature, actually tackling discernible subject matter, though still with a characteristically cracked Malkmus obliqueness. These tunes, in fact, find malkmus at possibly his most personal and most vulnerable. Album closer "Malediction" finds malkmus excavating himself from an unhealthy relationship, singing, rather directly: "So long--goodbye to the nervous/apprehension--I certainly won't miss ya/my heart is unable to stay so unstable, no more."

Also like the previous two records, the jicks can jam--opener "Pencil Rot" is a muscular rocker with a post-disco '4 on the floor' beat; "It Kills" is a propulsive mid-tempo tune a la "(Do Not Feed) the Oysters;" and "No More Shoes" sounds kind of like a cross between a Sonic Youth rave-up and Pavement's "Platform Blues" (aka "Ground Beefheart").

Finally, the album has the requisite number of wistful ballads, such as "Freeze the Saints," "Post-Paint Boy", and the aforementioned "Malediction." The really great thing, for me, about malkmus's solo career is that each record reveals malkmus pushing himself as a songwriter; the subsequent growth is subtle, but rewarding nonetheless. From the more earnest, though perhaps a bit inconsequential pop of the self-titled debut, to the spaced out jam-rock of Pig Lib, and now Face the Truth, where malkmus is able to incorporate the strengths of both elements, plus a few new tricks, resulting in probably the most cohesive album of his career.

Highly recommended (5 stars here doesn't mean it's perfect, or even "one of the best records ever," but 4 stars was too low--it's an excellent record!)
