Bill Callahan is one of a number of performers who present their work under the banner of a band name. Generally, the "band" is just him, other times it includes various cohorts. This set is given added punch and sparkle by the quietly incessant rhythms of drummer Jim White (his rolling foundation for "The Well" sounds like a cowboy gallop across the prairie). Also, it's great to hear acoustic guitars being utilized for music not tied to just folk traditions. Callahan's songs are slices of Americana at its finest -- from the Yankee transcendentalism of New England forefathers to the sweep of westward expansion and the chokehold of loss and longing. The first song's opening words are "winter weather" and the closing number's final phrase is "thinking of the future." In between lies just about anything you need. --David Greenberger

Smog (Bill Callahan) est un artiste américain, auteur-chanteur-compositeur dont la musique, de veine minimaliste, porte des textes d'une richesse et d'une profondeur renouvelées à chaque écoute. "A river ain't too much to love" contient des chansons d'une force poétique poignante. l'ironie affleure ici et là, et certaines évocations sont délicieusement cocasses ("the well")
Sa reprise du traditionnel "in the pines" est renversante et particulièrement émouvante.
Le son très intime de l'album capte et délivre la voix, la guitare et tous les instruments utilisés avec une rare présence, à se croire à quelques centimètres d'eux.
Bill Callahan nous fait voyager tout en nuances à travers une Amérique à taille humaine, loin des matraquage quotidiens.
"A river..." est aussi une excellente porte d'entrée dans l'oeuvre féconde de cet artiste.

I first heard "Rock Bottom Riser" by pure chance and came to the immediate conclusion that if the album was in anyway consistent, it would be well worth a listen. In truth, I haven't been remotely disappointed. Smog is Leonard Cohen on smarties; or perhaps Fairport Convention in a thunderstorm; it lies somewhere between the two. If you enjoy folk-rock and the utter simplicity of plucked acoustic guitar and well-measured, uncluttered vocals, this is a fine draft, well worth the savouring.
An excellent addition to any highly selective collection.
