Singer-songwriter Gram Parsons, the architect of country-rock and patron saint of American roots music—"alt" and otherwise—died in 1973 at age 26, but the enormity of his influence remains constant. Florida-born and Georgia-bred, Parsons began playing at age 14 and launched his first group, the International Submarine Band, in NYC in the late ‘60s. Transplanted to L.A., he joined the Byrds, shaping their landmark album Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, and made further musical history with the Flying Burrito Brothers. After discovering Emmylou Harris playing in a D.C. bar, he went on to record two now-legendary solo LPs, GP and Grievous Angel, that spotlight the peerless harmony of their divergent voices, hers angelic and pure, his ragged and scorched by his demons. Rhino’s historic set presents those two soulful albums remastered and expanded, plus a third disc of precious alternate takes from those recordings.

収録されたコンプリート音源も素晴らしいですし、
ラジオでのインタビューでの、グラムの優しげな声が
良いのです。

わざわざこの盤で買ってよかったと思うのです。
「カントリー・ロックとか、ジャンル分けなんか
　関係ないよ。良い音楽があるだけさ」
と、その声で言われると、心に沁みます。

ビギナーの方はやはり「GP」単独で買うほうが
無難でしょうが、二枚ともプラス「スリープレス・ナイツ」も
いずれ聴く予定、なら、ちょっと無理してこっちにしましょう！！

アルバムごとの出来・不出来がほとんどない人なので。

1960年代ザ・バーズにほんの一時期在籍しただけで『ロデオの恋人』という歴史的名盤を作り上げる原動力となり、カントリー・ロックと呼ばれる音楽を創ったものの、26歳で夭折した伝説的ミュージシャン、グラム・パーソンズ。その彼の２枚のソロ・アルバムに興味深いインタヴューの録音などをボーナス・トラックとして追加した２枚のディスクに、未発表の別テイクをまとめたディスク１枚を加えたセットである。

聴いていると、グラム・パーソンズは、単に創始者というだけでなく、60年代のザ・バーズから70年代の初期イーグルスへつながる流れのまさに中心にいた人物だと実感する。現在のアメリカのポピュラー・ミュージックは彼に負うところが大きいと言ってもよい。カントリー・ロックにあまり詳しくなく彼のソロ・アルバムをまだ聴いたことがないという人でも、その二つのグループが好きなら、このセットを思い切って買っても損はしないと思う。（初期イーグルスの“Midnight Flyer”という曲は、パーソンズの２枚目のアルバムに入っている“Ooh, Las Vegas”という曲を基にしているのではないかと思うほど似ている。）

それにしても、３枚目のディスクが素晴らしい。未完成の状態で歌詞が一部欠落していたり歌い損ないがあったりもするが、完成したアルバムに加えられているいろいろな音がなくアレンジも伴奏もシンプルであるがゆえに、かえって歌の魅力が際立っている。これを聴いた後に完成版を聴くと、少々騒々しく感じるほどだ。すでに２枚のソロ・アルバムを聴いたことのある人にも、ぜひおすすめ。

My first purchase of any of Gram Parsons work, I love it. I never thought I would get into country, but these sessions just ooze quality. The harmonies with Emilou Harris are glorious, I could llisten to them all day.

I was turned on to Gram Parsons via The Flying Burrito Brothers back in the '70s. I came across Brass Buttons on You Tube & gained a new respect for his music. The musicians here include some of Elvis' Band; James Burton-guitar, Glen D Hardin-pianist, Ronnie Tutt-drummer. Emmylou Harris harmonizes with Gram and it don't get no better than that! This music is his legacy,buy it. If you'd like to learn more about Gram read "Twenty Thousand Roads-The Ballad of Gram Parsons" by David Meyer. He chronicles, in a no punches pulled fashion, the short life of this talented man.

Concise and comprehensive log of Gram at his peak (much too brief) but so much of his best work on these CD's. The Re-master's are impeccable. I've been listening to this music for years-but have never heard anything as pure and natural as what's on this compilation. Really great. No fluff. Nothing Gram himself wouldn't be proud of. Remember Gram Parson's! Don't hesitate to purchase. I actually have no reason to hold on to my old recordings of these songs after listening to this. These are purely untouchable.

Like many of you thinking of buying this, I was tempted by the outtakes. Some of them I had on bootleg, but I was so desperate to get anything "new" by GP that I broke down. Good sound--can't say it's better than previous issues. Some outtakes are more noticably different than the standard fare. I only wish that the record companies would clean up some of the great bootlegged recordings. Now that would be a box set worth having.
