Though heralded as an instant hip-hop classic by some, Common's Be doesn't quite live up to the hype, though it is still has several strengths going for it. Compared to the esoteric themes and production of his last album, Electric Circus, Be is far more grounded in street-level beats and rhymes, especially on songs like "The Corner" and "Real People"--Common's odes to personality and places 'round the way. At only 11 songs, this is a very compact album, both a blessing and curse by keeping the pacing brisk but it also amplifies weaknesses like the syrupy crossover attempt, "Go," or overly sentimental "Love Is." Production by Kanye West and Jay Dee is uniformly strong and it lends a consistency that is essential for such a relatively short album. It is worth noting that Common and Kanye's chemistry is especially well matched. -- Oliver Wang

ここ最近ニギワッているシカゴ勢の人からまたまだ良作CDがでます。
今回のコモンのアルバムもアンダーグランドな作りになっています。
そして、なんといってもプロデューサーとしてカニエ・ウェストを迎えまてのアルバムになってます。
半分以上はカニエ作なんじゃないでしょうか？’４月２２日判明している部分）もちろんジョン・レジェンド参加です。
他にもJay-Deeがプロデュースしている曲もあるようです。
８曲ぐらい聴いての感想は、過去で１、２番目のできだと思います。
今までのコモンのよさも出してますし、カニエのビートもまたまた素晴らしいです。
自分のおすすめは「Go」という曲です。
もいろん蟹江作なんですが、ちょっとおもしろい作りになっています。
これは買って損はないと思います。

レトロなソウル傑作アルバム

KANYE WESTがエグゼクティブ・プロデューサーに迎えられた今作は、KANYE渾身のサンプリング集でもある。力の入れ方で言えば最近NEPTUNESがSNOOP DOGGに力を入れたことに近いのかもしれないが、こういう傾向はプロデューサーを本気にさせ、絶品を作り上げるから好ましい。
今回は11曲、とボリュームはコンパクトにまとまっているが、大半をKANYE WESTが手がけ、残りを最近ではマライア・キャリー、昔からエリカ・バドゥなどを手がけている長年のよしみでジェイムズ・ポイザーが参加
KANYEは相変わらずレトロなバックグラウンドを提供し、時には高速回転させ、常にシンガーの歌声が何かしら聞こえてくるため、ラップアルバムであるというよりは、むしろソウルアルバムにラッパーがフィーチャーされているのかと思ってしまうくらいだ。それだけ、ラップを普段聞かないユーザーにも十分通用するほど万人向けに作られているにも関わらず、疎かではなく作りの細かい職人技が光っている。
新しいKANYEのアプローチとして4曲目が印象的だったのだが、いつもどおり高速回転させたソウルシンガーの声を、テディ・ライリーのボコーダーのような加工で機械を通し、それをあたかもエレキギターがシンセサイザーのような扱いでラップ中に響き渡る。それがフックに移ると急に普通の早回しボーカルに戻るという離れ業が凄まじい。
KANYEのサンプル技術のいついにネクストレベルへ到達したかのようだ。そんな軌跡が垣間見える傑作ソウルラップアルバム。

I'd have to say this is my favorite album by common. I'm finding that I don't listen to a lot of music on the radio these days. I enjoyed this album tremendously as every track is a good listen. My favorite is faithful as the first verse just blew my mind. Just put on the headphones and sit back. Be is an album that everyone should give a listen to. I just wished it had more songs.

I could write my normal complex and verbally dextrous 3 paragraphs, however this time I think I'll keep it simple. I usually wait a week or so from my first listens to review an album. I believe it takes at least that amount of time and at least one listen accompanied by one's favorite intoxicant. With all of the prerequisites now complete, I can sum this LP up in one word.

Perfect.

First off, I love Common and the 'Be' album. I'm giving this a bad review because this is NOT the normal BE album, this is an INSTRUMENTAL version. I would not have spent the money I did on just the instrumental, and nowhere on the description did it state that it was just the instrumental version.

I like this CD a lot. Kanye West produced it and sings on it.
"Go" was the album's second, and highest charting single. The song featured Kanye West and John Mayer, however all the verses are performed by Common. The video for the song included shots of Common surrounded by models. Common featured controversial spoken word recording artists, The Last Poets, on the album's first official single, "The Corner": "They took my song to a higher level. And that's what hip-hop was about to me. It would have a message. Just them being from the '70s and being used in hip-hop and their spirit brought something pure to it."
