内容紹介

Produced by the artist and four-time Grammy winner Herbie Hancock, Flow heralds nothing less than the brilliant second act of Blanchard's already extraordinary career. Flow is TB's rambunctiously heated answer to those unenlightened few who doubted that this chill master of the urbane film score (Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X, Barbershop) could get down. Indeed, Flow not only showcases Blanchard's prodigious instrumental and composing skills; it reveals him to be both a shrewd judge of young talent and a bandleader of Milesian dimension and magnitude as well.

Amazonレビュー

Flow is trumpet player Terence Blanchard's second album for Blue Note. Over the years Blue Note's recorded some of the best trumpeters the world has ever known; from Miles Davis and Lee Morgan to Freddie Hubbard and Don Cherry. Terence Blanchard manages to successfully draw on the label's rich history, moving with ease from a ballad like "Over There" to the organic build and insistent propulsion of the album's longest track, "Harvesting Dance." He embraces melodic precision, but always in accord with a resonant emotional foundation. Producer Herbie Hancock is a perfect fit for this project, bridging the traditional realms of post-bop and modernist inclinations. --David Greenberger

Drum sticks begin counting rhythm, Lionel Loueke taps on the guitar, bass joins in, Terence Blanchard takes up trumpet, Loueke takes out synthesizer like sound from his guitar…. Every quartet members are in a state of concentration so focused to absolute absorption in playing. Mihaly Csíkszentmihályi described “flow” as being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost. The music of Flow jumps from style to style, is brim-full of ideas, embracing swing, modal jazz, even jazz soul, African rhythms, and hip-hop beats. This is truly a great album to be explored. Every members impartially shares compositions. Following experimental “Flow, Part I,” Loueke draws us into an African world. “Wadagbe” is primitive and spiritual on the opening. Brice Winston depicts African vibe beautifully with his soprano sax. Loueke takes over with unique guitar play. Noisy color stands for a bustling on the waterside. Braking the silence of the peaceful world, Blanchard blows out powerfully. Derrick Hodge and Kendrick Scott send out constant strong pulse throughout the track, taking a more traditional approach. Opening with memorable trumpet solo,“Benny’s Tune” is another Loueke composition featuring Herbie Hancock on piano. His beautifully understated phrases inevitably add so much to the tune. Scott’s “The Source” becomes one of memorable tracks in part because of Hancock’s wonderful piano solo too. Hodge and Scott are full of life and energy against mastery Hancock. Hodge’s “Over There,” begins with a nostalgic piano solo by Aaron Parks, is a heartbreaking number in this album. Blanchard’s trumpet sounds sorrowfully, which appeals to the memory of our childhood, of going home with friends in the red sky at sundown, of promising play together tomorrow again. Parks’ “Harvesting Dance” has much of flamenco flavor, is played passionately. Hodge’s introduction reminds me of Art Davis in Coltrane’s “Ole.” Winston’s tenor powerfully describes Spanish world, Loueke follows with somewhat distorted flamenco touch. But pulling everything together is the brilliantly assured trumpet of Blanchard. He paints imaginatively passionate world. Scott responds with powerful stick performance, leading to the denouement.

Blazing, exciting modern jazz from a rather underrated trumpeter. Great price for a 2-LP record, and as I have other Blanchard discs, just could not resist this one!
