パワーポップ全開の「Joining A Fan Club(邦題:ファンクラブに入るなら)」
ドラマチックな展開の「The Glutton Of Sympathy(邦題:憐れみの王様)」
スケールの大きさに飲み込まれてしまう曲「All Is Forgiven(邦題:優しく許して)」
美メロで涙腺刺激系の「Too Much, Too Little, Too Late(邦題:言葉にさよならを)」

Join The Fan Club of The Best Power Pop Record Ever!

That's right you read correctly. Not only is the best power pop record ever, but I believe it's the Sgt Pepper of my generation, and in my books the best album in the last twenty years period. What does it tell you when their is over 100 reviews and majority rate it five stars. Now I am going to make further bold claims that will rattle some cages. I believe that the two brains behind "Spilt Milk" who are Roger Manning Jr(Keyboardist/Vocalist) and Andy Sturmer (Drummer/Lead Vocalist) are the modern Lennon and McCartney, and to add injury to insult they are more talented then Lennon and McCartney. I know for saying such a statement many of you will give me a low rating, and I don't care. Now I know I stand on thin ice for saying that, because I am fully aware that JellyFish only made two albums and Manning Jr and Sturmer are not house hold names. That is the tragedy of Jellyfish, but "Spilt Milk" counts for 5 albums in my opinion. I know I haven't even started to review this album, because I am setting a template of how great "Spilt Milk" really is. Before I go into the review I have to tell you what my first impression was. I accidentally discovered Jellyfish, and was hesitant to listen to them cause of their appearance. I made poor initial judgement of their Dr. Suess. outfits. Now the first time I heard Jellyfish was in the mid 2000's. That is a decade later when it was recorded. When I put the cd in my car I heard the intro to " Hush" and thought "OMG I should have gone with my instinct, cause these Dr Suess wannabes are going to sell me some drug induced nonsense, but when I heard the acapella followed by the violins I thought that maybe this is a Disney production. It blended right into the second track "Joining A Fan Club." It starts with an over-driven distorted guitar and I was like "Yes, Donald Duck is pissed off and he is going to burn the Magic Kingdom down!". Then realized as the song kicked in that this was some serious craftsmanship. 46:13 minutes later I was sad. Why? Because I realized that my rollercoaster trip was over, and that I wanted to hear more. I got stung by the Jellyfish and their was no cure. Everytime I finish listening to this album even to this day I get sad, because I have the knowledge that Jellyfish have been broken up, and probably will never come back together to give us beautiful music. "Split Milk" is a masterpiece, because it has every ingredient of what good music is. Let me give seven points why this album is a jackpot.
1. First, the songs are written with great melodies, and the excellent lyrics have a wit, and carry an imagery that can only come from born songwriters. Listen to songs especially like "The Ghost At Number One", " New Mistake", or any song for that matter.
2. Second, the arrangements are perfect. Think of Queen, Beach Boys, Beatles, etc., except Jellyfish puts a modern spin to their arrangements cause you can hear that they learned from the fore fathers.
3. Third, the voices are amazing. The back vocals would make the producer Roy Thomas Baker proud, and the lead vocals are out of this world. Sturmer is an underrated rock singer who delivers passion and range. Every vocal track is so perfect that it's sick. To think that this was recorded before the whole auto tune era.
4. Fourth, the performance instrumentally is pretty high standard for a power pop/rock album. Musicianship level is high and that is evident.
5. Fifth, the production is flawless. Their is a lot of tracks recorded, and they are separated, and mixed so good to the point that you can hear every nuances. You can hear broken glass, smooches, and background effects clearly. This album goes beyond the four piece rock band. You can hear symphonic instruments like tympani, tuba, and violins. All different kind of keyboards are played, including accordians. Even the distortion and feedback in the song "All Is Forgiven" is heard with distint clearness. An album of this magnitude needs a hell of a mixing engineer. Their is so much instrumentation that it could have easily been lost in a mesh without the proper hands. You can see that they spend a lot of time in producing.
6. The sixth point is the theme of the over all album. Every song talks about a different subject. Yet the album ends musically the way it started, and that is because all the songs have a common thread. I won't tell you the common thread, but the fact is "Spilt Milk" is a rock opera.
7. Lastly, everything is done with a detailed deliberate purpose. This goes from their lyrics, arrangements, all the way to the instruments chosen, and the way it was produced. Every effect on this album is adding to the mental story. Even the musical styles have purpose. The music ranges from jazz, hard rock, pop, folk, cabaret, to moments that sound like a movie score. Sturmer and Manning Jr are hugely underrated. Jellyfish left behind a masterpiece, and yes I would consider this work to be in the realm of rock/pop genius.
The mystery of it all is how in the world did this album pass me and some listeners by in the 1993? How come this album is still in the realm of cult followings? Even if this album does not come in top 500 albums by Rolling Stone Mag it will not deter my decision from what I think. Usually somethings get unnoticed in life, because majority of the time it wasn't that good. But "Spilt Milk" isn't that case. It baffles me because many people, and famous musicians share the same sentiment that I do. To know that Seattle overshadowed "Spilt Milk" is a criminal fate that I do not understand. The funny thing is you won't find me listening to a grunge album today. Some of those bands are passé and mediocre. Sometimes those grunge bands pop up in my iPod random selection and I skip it, because they are so dated. "Spilt Milk" on the other hand I can listen to it for the rest of my life, because it's timeless. That is what masterpieces do. They transcend time. Oh by the way, now whenever I see a picture of Jellyfish in their Dr.Suess threads I no longer get put off by it. Who really makes fun of Einstein's hair? Jellyfish's image makes perfect sense, but funny enough when I see a guy today wearing flannel, long greasy uncombed hair, and a goatee I start to laugh.
