聴いた！！　イカレタ♪

ブレイクビーツって、コレを最初に聴いたな。

後はアンダーワールドとかトリッキーとか聴いたが

コイツが（97年当時）一番だったね。

（※U2は「POP」でブレイクビ−ツを消化し切れて無かった、早過ぎたね）

ノエル・ギャラガーとの「5. セッティング・サン」も格好良かったが

一見、単調な「6. イット・ダズント・マター」が大好きだ。

大ヒットしたM1『Block Rockin` Beats』、OASISのノエル・ギャラガーが参加した『Setting Sun』を含む彼らにとって通算２作目のアルバム。とにかくブレイクビーツとヴォイス、ベースラインの絡みがかっこいい。彼らの作品の中で最もブレイクビーツよりで、一つの頂点を極めたともいえる。個人的には彼らのアルバムの中で一番好き。

なんといってもこの分厚いベース音、ビートにつきる！！はっきり言って別に今までテクノやらビッグビートやらクラブミュージックやら聴いたことない人をも関係なく巻き込む10年に1度出るかでないかといった作品。頭2曲を大音量で聴いたら全身血たぎります。そしてシングルになってる”setting sun”はあのオアシスのギャラガー兄弟の兄貴ノエルが「俺にも歌わせろ！」と頼み込んだ作品。あのノエルがですよ？期待に十二分にこたえてくれます。

～たたみかけるようなビートは他では聴く事ができません。

1曲目から疾走していくビートは途中何度かダウンするも私たちが望んだ通りの彼らのサウンドです。ロックよりロックらしい破壊力はリスナーの暴力性もケアしてくれます。アートワークも彼らの中では素晴らしいのではないでしょうか。ただ、M-11は彼ら以外にもやれる人がいるだろうという点ではアルバムに収録されていなくても良かったと思います。～

97年発表の2ndアルバムを紙ジャケットにて。ハードなドラムループの『ブロック・ロッキン・ビーツ』。沈静化しつつあったクラブ・ミュージックとロックを融合し一気に表舞台に出したアルバムでその後のブレイクビーツに多大な影響を与えた。ノエル・ギャラガー(OASIS)との共作でシーンを席巻した『セッティング・サン』も収録。

1997年3月26日リリース。彼等のセカンド。5『Setting Sun』でオアシスのノエル・ギャラガーが参加していることもあり、彼等が一挙に『認知』された作品だろう。

音楽的に実に面白いアルバムである。リズム・音色・構成どれをとってみてもユニークで他にない面白さに満ちあふれている。それでいて彼等独特の『流れ』のようなものを持っていて、エネルギーのままに膨張するかと思えば、静かに流れたりする。単にビッグ・ビートとかエレクトロニカとかに単純に分類できない面白い成分に溢れた作品だと思う。

個人的にはシングル・カットされた5よりも1→3が好きだ。音とリズムをいじっていじっていじりまくった後に出来上がったサウンド。そんな感じである。『Elektrobank』のリフが頭から離れなくなる時がある。

Although Roni Size's New Forms won the Mercury Prize in 1997, it is very hard to argue that the Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole does not hold up better than any of the great albums 1997 electronica has to offer. For one thing, it is a matter of consistency; each song flows into the next, making Dig Your Own Hole more cohesive than even mix albums. But unlike mix albums, each song has a distinct quality that sets it apart from the song before it (although "Don't Stop the Rock" sounds like "It Doesn't Matter" Part II). For another, it is a matter of confidence. If this was the first album the Chemical Brothers ever made, it would no doubt be the greatest debut album in electronic music. But it's their second, and the maturity from the previous album is immediately apparent. This album is dead-on focused; the Chemical Brothers would never again sound so assured. The best techno albums are the ones that keep the vocals to a minimum. On Dig Your Own Hole, only "Setting Son" serves as an actual song with lyrical structure, the other ten songs are loose and adventurous. The reason why Dig Your Own Hole is techno's opera is because of the way it starts, the way it continues, and the way it finishes. The beginning is a perfect build-up bassline carousing into the explosive "Block-Rockin' Beats" and it finishes with a Gothic-like chime rounding off the masterful, Arabian-influenced "The Private Psychedelic Reel". And in between is the most accomplished Big-Beat rave electronica has ever produced. Dig Your Own Hole will always be a top ten techno album. Exhilirating.

The Chemical Brothers essentially founded the big beat techno subgenre. "Dig" helped popularize the genre, and it hardly sounds dated. Of course, there's the amazing hit "Block Rockin' Beats" (still one of my favorites), and although the rest of the album isn't as infectious, the songs are still very interesting and mostly entertaining (there ARE some not-so-good tracks, however those ones still usually have some interesting qualities). Also, its historical importance definitely adds to its rating. It is, however, pretty uneven (I would've given it a 4.5, but its historical influence bumps it to a 5). A better way to utilize the album would be to play single tracks off it. As a fan of "big beat" myself, this album is pretty satisfying along with Fat Boy Slim's "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" and The Prodigy's "The Fat Of The Land" (I still think "Fat Of The Land" is way better than "Dig"). Recommended mostly for techno/electronica fans (though most people will love "Block Rockin' Beats").

I saw The Orb opening up for The Brothers bake in the Spring of '97 and little did I know that this was the album that had just came out and they were promoting. From start to finish, it is a great disc to play for any time of day.

This is The Chemical Brothers second best album after 'Come with us'. I only wish that more of the tracks would have sounded more like " Block Rockin Beats " , " It doesn't matter" and " Don't Stop the Rock " and less like " Dig your own hole" , " Setting Sun " and " The Private Psychedelic Reel" but hey its still not bad. I'd say this album was on par with their debut 'Exit Planet Dust' perhaps a tad better. I reccommend this cd to anyone that likes aggressive in your face sound and/or tripped out rock samples mixed in with big beat techno. I prefer ' Come With Us ' but I guess it comes down to personal preference.
