"32 Frames for Amplified Orchestra" is another orchestral piece. This one builds section by section, the tempo and instrumentation increasing slightly. Spectacular. "Listening In" is an electronic piece constructed mainly of non-musical percussive samples. This is trickier to appreciate, but it definitely sets a mood. It is a sound collage from before Pro Tools made those easier. "Cadenza for Piano and Electric Piano" is a minimalist piece. After a series of chords runs separated by long periods of silence, the piano starts an ethereal run with the electric piano shadowing and weaving throughout. It is a hypnotic track.
I was never able to find a copy of the album Alphabed (A Mystery Dance) (this is before the internet), but a friend had a 12" featuring "The Amusement". This is another accessible piece that almost sounds like a Propaganda track minus Claudia Brucken. "45 is" is a 20 minutes long minimalist piece. "Goodbye Mr. G" evokes Laurie Anderson. "Kink Konk" has a percussive industrial sound.
Both of these albums are included in this set along with a third album that was never released and some other rarities. The unreleased album, Under the Son, includes "Sequence" a driving drum and guitar piece with textured vocals, the epic "Passages (parts 1-3)" and the short muscular "Sometimes it Rains". Other rarities include alternate versions of tracks and music from the singles.
This isn't quite a complete set since the "The Amusement (Complete Version)" has been excluded for some strange reason (although the 7" and 12" versions are present). Also, the liner notes reveal that the "majority" of "Under the Son" is represented alluding to other unreleased music. That said this package is an incredible gift from ZTT. Highly recommended for those who are interested in contempory classical music.
This is music that is full of technical, intellectual, visceral and atmospheric appeal. It will almost certainly appeal to people who like Steve Reich or Philip Glass and other more obscure 'minimalist' composers, because it seems to initally be coming from that direction.
However, what makes it different, and in a way more interesting, is that at this point in his career Poppy seemed to be driving towards a music which was more studio focused in many respects and which went further than Reich, Glass and others in adopting the music technology and production techniques of popular music and using it to forge a bona fide new kind of art music. Thus, music such as this is the natural successor to Reich and Glass in the innovation stakes.
Of course we are talking mid-80s and Poppy particularly makes extensive use of the Fairlight CMI (cutting edge music technology at the time) to produce much of the music in this set. Where acoustic instruments and voices are used in conjunction with the electronics I believe the work is at its most successful. Sometimes the purely electronic pieces have an 80s pop feel which is not too far removed from the electro pop of the day, and thus is slightly dated.
The remastering has certainly helped across the board - 'The Object is a Hungry Wolf' for instance now sounds much fuller and less spikey than on the previous CD version.
Highlights for me across the whole collection include the stately '32 Frames for Orchestra', the propulsive extended mini-opera '45 Is' and the very ambient 'Goodbye Mr G' with its idiosyncratic use of text and narration. For me, a significant highlight of this set is the previously unreleased 'The Passage (1-3)', a 26 minute long epic with banging electronic metallic percussion and operatic vocals.
If you are interested in genuinely innovative music then it will be well worth your while purchasing this collection.
I wasnt hopeful based on vague memories but have read a couple of positive reviews so I went in with hope.
Sadly, I found it largely unsatisfying. It flits from one distopian mess to another with little there to leave any room for optimism. Norhing to latch on to.
I am so tempted to take it down the charity shop but Ill probably give it one more chance before it comes to that - largely because of those reviews.
