「(1984)ロマンシング・ストーン 秘宝の谷/Romancing the Stone」と「(1985)ナイルの宝石/The Jewel of the Nile」。
Warshawski」。
「(1989)ローズ家の戦争/The War of the Roses」。
「(1993)心の扉/House of Cards」。
「(1983)2つの頭脳を持つ男/The Man with Two Brains」。

Wild and Crazy comedy from Wild and Crazy Guy

Decided to get some Steve Martin movies and realized I haven't seen this one anywhere for a while, so decided to get it. Was glad I did.
Steve Martin stars as Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (one of the running gags is how to pronounce this weird name), a brain surgeon who pioneered the "screw top" brain surgery. When he literally runs into Kathleen Turner's character, he uses his skills to save her life and falls in love. What he doesn't know is that she's a Gold Digger who likes to marry rich men and then torment them. Becoming quickly miserable, the good doctor meets another eccentric scientist who has developed a formula to keep brains alive in jars and has amassed a collection of living human brains. Dr Hfuhruhrr learns he has a telepathic link with one of the female brains named Anne Uumellmahaye (yes, another weird name) and falls in love with her. Now he wants to figure out how he can keep this man-brain love affair going while avoiding the backlash from his now scorned wife.
This film was made back when Steve Martin was still known as the "Wild and Crazy Guy" with the unique stand-up comedy style that nobody has really copied since. Making strange off-beat comedies was his forte at the time and this film is a fine example of the strange surreal comedy that he was a master of. This particular film is definitely a loving homage to those strange Science-Fiction films of the 1950's, particularly the "Living Brain" films that seemed to be more prevalent than they should have been (they even have a clip from the movie "Donovan's Brain" in this film which Steve Martin's character says is his favorite movie. What was actually taken as a serious subject in those kitschy old movies is turned into a very funny premise in this film. Martin's comedic timing is really spot-on in this film and his delivery is impeccable. Granted, the film is very bizarre, but only Steve Martin could really deliver.
This is an "R" rated film for nudity, so it's good to keep that in mind. I'm pretty sure it would remain an "R" rating today just for the nudity and some of the dialogue. It doesn't get really raunchy as today's R rated films tend to be, so it is kind of nice to have these older films that can be "Adult" without getting truly offensive.
The Blu-Ray presentation is good. Nice picture and sound. It's a Warner Archives release, so it's pretty bare bones as usual. The only special feature is a trailer for the film and only English subtitles are available. However, it's still enjoyable to watch.
Highly recommended for fans of 80's comedy and particularly Steve Martin.

Its probably my age or the fact my sense of humor isn't all that well developed, but this early effort from the combined comedic talents of actor Steve Martin and director Carl Reiner still manages to tickle my funny bone all these years after its initial release back in the dim, distant day-glow hue of the 1980s…
Following the death of his beloved wife, brilliant brain surgeon Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) now spends his days chained to his work spending his evenings talking to a framed painting of his wife. However, his life takes a sideways turn when he accidentally runs over gold-digger Dolores Benedict (Kathleen Turner), a seductive number whose always on the lookout for a new man with enough dollar to keep her in the life she deserves… Problem is, 'ol Dr Hfuhruhurr is too much of a nice guy to notice such inadequacies within her demeanour and takes it upon himself to save her life using his own revelatory 'screw-top, zip-lock brain surgery'. Soon she's recovered and her 'con' begins with the two married and whilst on honeymoon in Vienna, Hfuhruhurr is introduced to reclusive scientist Dr. Alfred Necessiter (David Warner) who holds key information for our lovelorn doc and the truth behind Dolores' deceit finally begins to unravel…
…I also forgot to mention a room full of talking brains, an overly amorous gorilla and a cat that seemingly cannot find his way out of the surgery. However, why spoil those things when you can discover them yourself? Erm. Director Carl ('The Jerk', 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid') Reiners' movie maybe stupid and sometimes a little too zany for some tastes, but you can't deny its pretty darn funny. Steve Martin is also on point with an excellent lead performance - zipping from broken lovelorn hero to crazed lunatic at the drop of a hat - delivering so many quotable lines, you will need to see it again just to marvel at how well he plays with the material. Kudos too to Kathleen Turner, who not only embodies the old fashioned seductress roles of the noir period, but also deftly plays Martin at his own game with a genuinely funny performance and in some cases, outdoes him by delivering a plethora of laugh out loud moments. She's really great and I sometimes forget how good she was back in the day, flitting from movies like this to 'Romancing the Stone' then onto 'Crimes of Passion' - she was highly versatile, handling drama, comedy and action with equal aplomb.
Warner Archives' region free (but US only) blu-ray release sports a highly detailed transfer (which I wasn't expecting, if honest) with a great audio track but sadly no extra special features. It thankfully comes with the original theatrical art on the cover with a very basic back design on the rear - but its seemingly being pushed as a budget release and therefore this is probably the best its going to be for fans of the movie. All in all, I have to recommend it due to the simple fact it still made me laugh, but newer viewers may find all the gurning and madcap stupidity too broad to bear, but for me - its silliness still did the trick. Worth a pop.
