元フェアポートコンヴェンションのギタリスト・ボーカルのリチャードトンプソン、アコースティックソロ新作(13曲+ボーナス2曲)です。数曲エレクトリックギター、マンドリン(もちろん本人)、パーカッション、ハーモニウム(らしきもの)も入っています。個人的に前作「The Old Kit Bag」はエレクトリックギター弾きまくりのサウンドは大好きだったのですが、楽曲的にイマイチだったので、今回のまるで'70年代半ばあたりのリチャードが甦ったかのような楽曲群は大変好みです。トラッド色強いメロディの「How Does Your Garden Grow」や完全に'70年代初頭の英シンガーソングライター風の「Miss Patsy」「Old Thames Side」「Mutton Street」やディラン調のマンドリン入り「A Solitary Life」など久々にツボにきました。詞は数曲を除いてほとんどが男女間の事を歌ってますが、やはり彼らしくストレートなラブソングはなく、曲ごとの主人公は様々な問題を抱えた人達です。ライナーによるとトンプソンは「このアルバムのプロダクションは聴衆が求めているものなんだ」と言っていますが、実は昔のトンプソンファンに向けて言っているのではないかなと思いました。それくらい'70年代半ばの彼の美メロセンスを感じます。しかもボーナスのうちの一曲は、サンディデニーのソロ1stに入っていた「John The Gun」のアコギ一本によるカヴァーです。

何曲かでパーカッションだけをバックにつける他は、職人芸の素晴らしいギターと年々表現力を増している渋ーい歌だけでじっくり聞かせる、全て新曲のスタジオ録音新作です。作曲能力も年を取って猶成長していると思います。どの曲も出来が良い。非常に狭い声域で歌うことを前提に曲が作られているはずですが、よくこれだけバリエーションをつけて、かつ表情豊かに歌えるものだと感心します。本人のウェブサイトで限定販売しているＣＤはマニア向けで金太郎飴っぽいものもありますが、一般販売する新作はさすがに緊張感も仕上がりも段違い。前半は彼にしては親しみやすいメロディーの曲が多く、後半は英国トラッド弾き語り中心。あとおまけに録音も良く生ナマしい音です。推薦。

It's easy to figure just why Richard Thompson performed these new songs in mostly a stripped acoustic style, it's because they just work better then when he performs his music in electric rock arrangements. Thompson's voice too has greatly improved and these may be some of his finest vocals on record so far!

Kürzlich wurde er zusammen mit anderen englischen Gitarrenheroen wie Eric Clapton, Robert Plant und Brian May von der Queen geehrt. Nicht böse war der stille Zyniker, dass diese ihn nicht kannte, fragte sie doch auch Clapton, ob dieser auch Gitarre spiele. Solche und ähnliche Geschichten könnte Thompson auch gut in seinen Songs verarbeiten. Gibt es doch viele ironische Spitzen und süffisante Anmerkungen über das Leben im Allgemeinen und die Liebe im Besonderen. Zur Vertonung begibt Thompson sich in seine Garage und nimmt dann im Alleingang (nur hie und da an den Percussions unterstützt) 13 wundervolle Songs auf. Sein federleichtes, akzentuiertes Spiel trägt seine sonore Stimme durch die immer mit einer Portion Schwermut versehenen Lieder. Neben viel Folk wie aus den Anfangstagen von Fairport Convention gibt es barocke und mittelalterliche Reminiszenzen . Musikalische Moden kommen und gehen, Thompson hat hiervon völlig unbeeindruckt wieder ein Album wider dem Zeitgeist am Start. Und wer sich die Zeit nimmt, dieser außerdem noch hervorragend aufgenommenen Platte intensiv zu lauschen, dem werden 45 wundervolle Minuten geschenkt.

When you say Richard Thompson, you have said it all. If only all singers, songwriters, and guitarists had at least one-fifth this guy's talent and ability, then what a wonderful world this could be.

There is no reason to preach to the choir. To the uninitiated or newly curious, starting here may not be your best choice, but it is still a good decision.

For anyone even remotely thinking they are having or will be having problems with Richard Thompson's latest solo outing, keep listening! Thompson has an amazing faculty for writing songs that almost seem boring at first listening because we THINK we've heard them before--it's like he's covering standards. But they're original, and so well-crafted and so Thompson-like we get fooled. Then after the tenth time through....we just shake our heads in wonder! Great stuff! Let it blow, indeed!

Listening to this CD (something I, sadly, don't foresee myself doing much in the future), I was struck by its resemblance to Nick Drake's brilliant "Pink Moon." But the resemblance proved to be superficial. When Joe Boyd received the tapes of PM, he remarked that he thought they were just demos, but soon realized he was listening to the finished product.

No such luck here. This CD seems incomplete. While the musicianship is first-rate as always, the songs themselves are unfinished, and the vocal work is downright sloppy in spots. The melodies, such as they are, are too high-pitched for Richard to reach, and reach he does, almost always unsuccessfully.

The CD almost sounds like a recording made simply to fulfill contractual obligations. I have seen Richard in concert every time he has come to town in the last fifteen years. If his current tour will be including a lot of songs from this collection, I may have to pass up the opportunity this time and wait until only a few of these are sprinkled into future concerts.
