On Mirabilis, the Mediaeval Baebes drill even deeper (and wider) into their chorale sound, making music with ancient roots and timeless designs. An octet of Englishwomen with a penchant for dressing up in flouncy gothic gowns just this side of Victoria's Secret, they've released several albums mining medieval hymns and plainsong. They're still at it here, matching obscure Latin, Gaelic, and old English texts (along with the odd Robert Burns poem) to music that is often newly composed but sounds as if it came out of a Dark Ages court or monastery. But without ever playing instruments more modern than the violin, they bring a modern arranger's head to tunes that float on percussion, recorder, concertina, cittern, hurdy-gurdy, and strings. Under the musical direction of founder Katherine Blake, the harmonies are richer and more complex than on previous Baebes discs. Emily Ovenden's "Temptasyon" flies with soaring three-part harmony and lush accompaniment of strings, both modern and ancient. The Baebes get a little arty on a horror-house reading of "Tam Lin," and they perhaps had to cover "Scarborough Fayre" at some point. But they more than make up for it with the serene "Star of the Sea." This is one time you won't mind having someone get Mediaeval on you. --John Diliberto

海外版のジャケは80年代のマイナーグループみたいで、
最高にダサいのですが、内容は素晴らしい。

自分はdeleriumのnuage de monde というアルバムが好きで、
そのvol.にこのバンドを起用していた曲が、美しく芸術的で素晴らしかったので
買いました。

少しエンヤっぽいかな〜と思ったんですけど
高等な技術使ってます。
エンジニアもセンスあり、間の取り方、曲の展開、サウンド、音色、天才の域に
入ってると思います。

面倒なのですが、このアルバム聴くためにソフトウェア音楽プレーヤの
korg-audio gate （winで断然に音よし,itunesに戻れなくなります！サウンドカードなきゃダメかも）
にドラッグ＆ドロップして聴いてます。

エニグマ辺りのポップさを求めるなら気に入らないと思います。
リベラやアンサンブル・プラネタのようなポップな声楽系バンドに飽きた人には
新鮮さもあり良いと思います。

ガチガチのグレゴリオ聖歌ってわけではないので、難しく聴かなくても大丈夫。

To use the words of one of the greatest female music icons Ms Siouxsie Sioux - "Following in the footsteps of a rag doll dance, we are entranced, Spellbound".
This sums up the new Mediaeval Baebes album to a T, absolutely Spellbinding. Where as previous albums retained an earthy feel inspired by the seasons:- Salva Nos and The Rose both representing Winter,Worldes Blysse the Autumn, and Undrentide the summer, Mirabils sets its sights on the world not always seen,but often felt - the supernatural fringes. This is reflected in the glorious music. Although the Baebes are now down to 8 members a fuller and more confident sound has emerged.
I did start to write this review with the aim of describing some of the songs but ive realised i cant, the songs hang around like mist on an early morning lake, swirling and dissipating before you eyes. Special mentions go to "Temptasyon", which is the most Etheriel moment in music (even beating Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights!), and the downright eerie "Tamlin" which tells of an encounter with the Fairie Queen whom promises to "Pull out both your eyes and give you eyes of stone" if caught on Halloween. Whats the bets Tim Burton will use this song in one of his gloomy epics!! The rendition of Scarborough Fair has to be heard to be beleived, and could even trouble the singles charts if it was given a single release.
The album is probably best summed up by the playful and exhuberant "This worlde fareth as a fantasye" with its gorgeuos melodies and harmonies often soaring into the ether.
There really isnt a duff moment on this album, and considering theres 18 tracks thats some acheivement. Its not stuffy and dry like most classical music, nor is it a group of (admittedly gorgeous) girls getting their "earthly charms" out to entice the men like female crossover groups like Bond. This music is new,fresh and exciting even though it draws on the past for its influences and lyrics. I urge you all to listen to the samples and follow your instincts by pressing the Order now button... i can guarantee none will come away disappointed.

This CD is a treasure (as are all MB's works!) Full of sacred and pagan traditions, with haunting tales of Tam Lin and the Sidhe, it also includes a luminous version of Scarborough Faire. I have heard some snarks criticize them for 'going commercial'. with that particular song. Are you serious? I only wish the commercial public could recognize the beauty and value of this endlessly entertaining band. Their music is a real treat. If you are a fan of the medieval, the sublime and the other-worldly, don't miss this gorgeous collection!

It's easy to see/hear why no-one has given this album fewer than five stars. I had heard the odd song by Mediaeval Baebes, but this is the first album that I've bought and listened to completely. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting more vocal harmonies and sparser (if any) accompaniments, something that leaned more towards early classical music and less towards folk. Who knows, perhaps my own ideas about mediaeval music are completely up the spout. I have no ideal how authentic this music is, though, even if it is very mediaeval indeed, it has a veneer of polished sophistication that is very 21st century. Why am I writing all this drivel? Why not just say that I absolutely love this album. No, it wasn't what I expected. It was better. And don't be put off by the packaging. The Baebes may market themselves on the basis that they are very sexy (which no doubt they are), but they are also talented and sensitive musicians.

This album has grown on me over time and is now a bit of a favourite. Lovely artwork on this addition ; nicer than the alternative version cover that has the Beabes wearing jeans! Delivered on time and in good condition.
