Amazon
311s place in rock n roll history seems secure. Unfortunately, so does its sound. Unlike other funk-inflected acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even Incubus, 311s never fully expanded on the promise of its initial musical vision. On Dont Tread On Me, the bands eighth studio release, P-Nut and the gang seem intent on mining the same familiar terrain they have since their 1995 self-titled classic. Fans of albums such as 2001s From Chaos and 2003s promising Evolver will likely find Tread familiar and perhaps even comforting, but its unlikely to invite a new horde of fans as the album often sounds like an imitation of the bands 311 helped inspire in its decade-plus career. There are some nice touches. "Speak Easy," "Waiting" and many of the other tracks evoke images of sandy beaches and warm summer breezes, but none are strong enough to help Dont Tread On Me stands out from the herd. --Jedd Beaudoin
Product Description
Don't Tread On Me resonates sound and energy the 311 way. Despite the brooding attitude of the grunge movement and the angst of the rap-rock movement, 311 has always stayed true to their own approach and their underlying message of unity and positivity. Because of their unique sound (mixing rock, hip-hop, reggae & funk), and because they have always maintained a balance of hard rocking songs and melodic, mellow gems the band has developed a rather diverse fan base from rock fans, punk fans, jam-band fans, pop fans, hip-hop fans to reggae fans, etc. BMG. 2005.

"Don't Tread On Me" is 311's 9th studio album and it is simply amazing. Just like all the others! If you are a old school 311 fan or just picking them up for the first time. Buy this album! You will LOVE IT!!
One song on here incorporates rapping, "Solar Flare", and it's an awesome song but so are the others too. After "Evolver", it would make sense to keep evolving and go a new direction (embrace their reggae roots and their rock sensibility); I know I didn't want to hear another clone of "Grassroots" or "Transistor". Nick Hexum and S.A. Martinez primarily sing here but it sounds amazing and the rest of the band has great musicianship.
The reason I can't give it 5 stars is because there was one song I didn't really care for and I'd be lying if I said that they hadn't made better than this. Any 311 fan should definitely own this though.
So if you're a big 311 fan, don't listen to all the people bashing this to pieces; give it a shot with an open mind and I'm pretty sure there's something on here you'll like (if not the whole album).
If you're just getting into 311, I would recommend getting "Grassroots" or "self-titled", or "Music" first to kind of follow the progression of each album and how they transform more and more.
Recommended.
