The raves the other reviewers have given this production are well-merited, and there's nothing I can add to that. However, potential purchasers should be aware that, at least on my copy of this DVD, the subtitles do not appear, not in any language. As I see other reviewers/purchasers refer to the subtitles, this problem is not the case with all copies; but it definitely is with mine. You can click to turn them on on the main menu; and you can click your remote to turn them on; and in both cases you can choose the subtitle language and the DVD will show that the subtitles are on . . . but no subtitles appear, not on either disk, not at any point. I have an all-region player, and have many many other DVDs and Blu-Rays of all sorts of origins, with none of which has there ever been a problem seeing subtitles (if the product offered them), so this must be some mis-coding in the production run of the specific DVD I have. But I enjoyed the performance immensely anyway! Buy it, and either bone up on the story first, or have a copy of the play at hand to follow along with. It's worth the little extra trouble in order to enjoy most fully this wonderful production.

Edit Add: The problem with "no subtitles" was with my DVD player. When I replaced that player with a new one, the subtitles appeared with no trouble. There must be a newer kind of coding that old players don't pick up on. I consequently upgraded my rating of this fine presentation to 5 stars.

L'alchimie entre Molière et Lully renait dans ce Bourgeois Gentilhomme réalisé en 2004, dans le pur style baroque du XVIIe siècle avec l'intégralité de son texte.
Vincent Dumestre dirige sur instruments d'époque son Poème Harmonique, ainsi que quelques musiciens de l’excellent ensemble Musica Florea. Benjamin Lazar, assisté de Louise Moaty, présente une mise en scène éblouissante de beauté et d'ingéniosité.
Dans la veine baroque, ce travail ne doit pas être comparé à celui réalisé par Jean-Marie Villégier et William Christie pour le mythique Atis de 1987 repris en 2011, tant leurs interprétations sont différentes, chacune ayant son identité propre.

Pour rappel, le Bourgeois Gentilhomme est une comédie-ballet créée en 1670 au château de Chambord, pour le Roi et sa cour.
Elle flattait le goût de ce qu'on appelait "les turqueries", en période de faste de l'Empire Ottoman. En effet, la réception en 1669 à Versailles, par un Louis XIV tout en habit de lumière, de Soliman Aga, envoyé du sultan Mehmed IV, avait provoqué un scandale. Soliman Aga aurait blessé le Roi en déclarant à sa sortie : « Dans mon pays, lorsque le Grand Seigneur se montre au peuple, son cheval est plus richement orné que l'habit que je viens de voir. » Piqué au vif, Louis XIV n'était pas donc fâché de prendre une revanche grâce au théâtre.
Le texte est en prose, sauf les entrées de ballet qui sont en vers. Molière y fait la satire d'un riche bourgeois voulant imiter les comportements des nobles.

Partie du Festival d’Utrecht en 2004, cette version du Bourgeois Gentilhomme fut présentée dans sept pays d'Europe.
Elève d’Eugène Green, Benjamin Lazar, âgé de moins de trente ans, y est à la fois metteur en scène et acteur. Il incarne le jeune premier Cléonte, ainsi qu'un Maître de philosophie aux allures de vieux singe courbé. Comme au temps de Molière, madame Jourdain est interprétée par un homme.

Le texte en ancien français apporte une touche savoureuse et se comprend d'autant plus qu'il est sous-titré.
Maquillée au blanc de céruse, la jeune troupe d'acteurs réjouit par son excellente prononciation face au public, et par sa gestuelle facétieuse. Son jeu délicieux rejoint celui de la Commedia dell'Arte.
Quelques personnages machiavéliques éclairés par en-dessous, ainsi qu'une chorégraphie parfois étrange, apportent une touche d'inquiétude fort intéressante. Sous le grotesque, percent la cruelle vérité et parfois l'émotion.

Le somptueux éclairage est réalisé aux chandelles, artificielles, mais semblant bien réelles. Il procure de chaleureux scintillements du plus bel effet intimiste.
Costumes et décors de toiles peintes aux couleurs chaudes, évoquent les peintres du Grand Siècle, tels Charles de la Fosse ou Simon Vouet.

Devant tant d'émerveillement pour les yeux, on pardonne quelques imperfections vocales de certains chanteurs.
La voix de Claire Lefilliâtre s'éclaire de subtilités évoluant selon les airs, de la plainte italienne à la chaconne des Scaramouche.

Ce DVD de 2011, déjà vendu à plus de 25 000 exemplaires, est une captation réalisée par Martin Fraudreau au théâtre Trianon situé à Paris.
Si on y regrette un léger excès de plans rapprochés, cela ne nuit pas à l'ensemble. L'expression des visages et la gestuelle baroque des acteurs y sont rendus avec précision.
La puissance de cette version réside essentiellement dans sa mise en scène fascinante, alliant beauté, étonnements et humour.
Car en ce pays-là du baroque, Maître Molière et le Grand Turc nous amusent assurément !
Ce Bourgeois Gentilhomme est une féérie de quatre heures qui se déguste comme une gourmandise.

Le second DVD, également capté par Martin Fraudreau, nous transporte à l'abbaye de Royaumont, où fut réalisé le long travail de création du spectacle. Ce documentaire intitulé intitulé « Les Enfants de Molière et de Lully » fut couronné du Laurier d’Or et du Grand Prix Louis Lumière au Festival du Creusot 2005.
Pour ma part, après avoir été éblouie par ce Bourgeois Gentilhomme que j'ai vu sur scène à Paris, ce double DVD me comble tout à fait.

Saluons aussi les années de patience de Jean-Paul Combet, directeur du label Alpha, qui peut aussi s'enorgueillir de la production d'un magnifique Cadmus et Hermione de Lully, DVD de 2008, réalisé à l'Opéra Comique par la même équipe : Vincent Dumestre et Benjamin Lazar.

For those of us (and that may be most of us) who now think of Moliere's plays as being, well, plays in the modern sense, this is a superb reminder of the fact that the Gesamptkunstwerk existed long before Wagner and entertainments in 17th century France were often a brilliant combination of the spoken word, song and dance. The dominance of the music may come as a surprise but Lully, as absolute a monarch in the musical sphere as Louis XIV was in the political, excelled not simply in his tragédie lyriques and church music but also as a collaborator for non-operatic stage works. This production probably gets us as close to an original performance as possible and is absorbing both for its integral qualities and its historically informed presentation. One word of caution. The scene where Jourdain is initiated as a 'Mamamouchi' is written by Moliere in a highly amusing pidgen faux-Turkish which resists translation by the subtitle bot. It is worth seeking out a decent translation of this scene as it is hilarious and makes far more sense of the proceedings! If you have any interest in the French Baroque, this is a must-see.

Descubrí a Moliere cuando estudié francés hará unos 6 años. Esta versión simplemente es espectacular. Muy cuidada.

La interpretación es genial y la música de Lulli y las danzas combinan muy bien. Muy recomendable.
