The remarks I am furnishing for this recording apply only to the Berlioz requiem, because I am not familiar with the “Death of Cleopatra”, and I haven’t listened to the Roman Carnival overture yet. Notice that I said ‘remarks’ and not review, as I am not qualified to review this or any other recoring.
Okay, having gotten the preliminary remarks out of the way, I must say that this is a wonderful recording, in many ways the best I have heard. Most specifically, the chorus performs magnificently, which is not surprising, considering that it is the chorus of the Vienna State Opera (the Munch/Boston recording uses a college group –the New England conservatory, as does the Ormandy/Philadelpia , and Beecham calls upon whoever was available at the time, apparently) and these groups just weren’t on anything approaching the level of excellence and professionalism of the VSO chorus. The other notable performer was the tenor, Gioseppi Sabbatini, who sang the “Sanctus” with just a slight amount of restraint, which was right on, in my uneducated opinion. Not to forget them, the orchestra and the conductor were both first rate, and, appealingly, didn’t go nutso in the Tuba Mirum.
In closing, my apologies to any professional musicians reading this who scoff at my remarks; my only qualifications are that I have numerous professional musicians in my family, and I have multiple recordings of the Requiem. Oh! I also have two ears and strong feelings about music, whatever that may be worth….
