Judee Sill's follow-up to her 1971 self-titled debut sadly also turned out to be her final album, yet Heart Food stands neck and neck with its wondrous predecessor as a near-flawless slice of 1970s pop-flavored Laurel Canyon folk. The production and arrangements here are much grander then on Judee Sill, with her original piano- and guitar-driven songs enhanced by strings, church organ, harmonica, pedal steel, kettle drums, and even male vocals. But no matter the song--be it the Brian Wilson-influenced "The Vigilante," the country-flavored "There's a Rugged Road," or the piano-solo delight "When the Bridegroom Comes"--it all comes back to Sill's virginal voice, which twists and teeters in varying octaves and moods, sometimes within the same track. Sadly, her deliberate songwriting style denied her any chance at a third album. Drugs claimed Judee Sill's life just five years after Heart Food, which can serve as an alluring introduction to this brilliant artist or as a proud bookend to her more-appreciated debut. --Scott Holter

伝説のシンガー・ソングライター、ジュディ・シルの遺作となった2nd

79年に35歳という若さで生涯を閉じたジュディ・シルの遺作となったアルバムです。

例えば『The Pearl』や『The Phoenix』といった曲は1stアルバムのレコーディングの時点で完成していた曲だったのですが、『Jesus Was A Cross-Maker』を収録するために2ndにまわされることになったというエピソードや、『The Vigilante』も71年にレコーディングされていたという事実からも分かる通り、1stの世界観の延長線上にある作品となっています。

しかし『Soldier of The Heart』は1stではみられなかったような、ポップなアレンジが新鮮な曲もあります。

他に気になる曲を挙げると、カントリー調のゆったりとした空気が最高な『There’s A Rugged Road』や『The Vigilante』は独特の歌い回しも含めて、ジュディ・シルらしいナンバーです。

『The Kiss』は、ジュディ・シルのキリスト教への深い思い、そしてピアノの旋律の美しさとキーの転調が印象的です。

そして彼女には珍しい8分弱という長尺なナンバー『The Donor』は、ピアノとジュディ・シルの歌声を中心としながら複雑にコーラスが重なり、リスナーを彼女の音世界へと引きずり込むような曲で、彼女には珍しく男性コーラスも動員し、美しく幻想的な世界を作り出しています。

一般的な知名度は低いですが、素晴らしいアーティストです。

僕は今までのリスナー人生の中でジュディシルを超える女性シンガーソングライターに出会えた事がない
彼女が生前発表した2枚のalbumはいずれも歴史的傑作に相応しい神々しい名作だが個人的にはこのセカンドにより愛着がある
ジュディシルと言えばそのオンリーワンなコード進行による楽曲の完成度の高さも勿論素晴らしいが何よりその一瞬にしてリスナーを自己の小宇宙へといざなうボーカリストとしてのカリスマ性に圧倒される
神懸かり的な魅力とは彼女のような事を言うんであろう
これ程までに孤独と悲しみそして希望その全てが同居した美しいalbumは稀である

1973に出された傑作です。
ニック・ドレイクが女の人になったらこんな声かなと思うような、哀しくて美しい声の持ち主です。ドレイクの『ピンクムーン』を初めて聴いたときと同じくらい衝撃を受けました。'Heart Food' は、キャロル・キングの『タペストリー』やローラ・ニーロの『ニューヨーク・テンダーベリー』と比べても遜色はありません。むしろこちらの方が麻薬的な美しさを内包しています。
　'The Kiss' は、今まで聴いたことのある同じような楽曲の中で、これを上回る曲を挙げようとしても、なかなか指を曲げられないくらい素晴らしいですし、他の曲も本当に心に響いてくるものばかりです。アレンジも申し分ない。彼女の、直接脳を触れてくるような声の特性が生かされています。'The Donor'や'Soldier of the Heart'にもやられてしまいました。

やはりヒットを飛ばしていたらしい、ジュディ・シル
最近になって知り購入しました
魅力的な声、ちょっとＵＫの雰囲気もあるアレンジ

いろんなサウンドの詰まったアルバムですが
すべてがジョディの声でうまくつむぎ合わせれてるそんな感想を持ちました
ＴＶのＢＧＭでも、たまにジュディの曲が使われています
今になって注目をあび出したのも、
ジュディの不思議な力のひとつかも・・・

Al di la dell artista in sé che per me merita 10 stelle voglio concentrarmi solo sulla stampa del vinile. Qualità molto alta, vinile silenzioso, inciso benissimo, restituisce un suono incredibilmente autentico ed analogico. Devo dire inaspettato

Let me start by saying that this is a review of the pressing and the amazing job that Intervention has done on this reissue, and not a review of the music. I am a fan of Judee Sill, but I'll let others describe what makes her great.

Years ago (before I knew better), I bought one of 4MenWithBeards' awful pressings of this album. Since it sounded no better than the MP3 that I'd been used to listening to, it largely just sat on the shelf. I was happy to see that it was reissued and mastered from the source, but I was weary of the price. After the 4MWB experience, I was cautious, and there were few reviews to judge by, so I did a little research. I was intrigued by Intervention's process, and since it appeared to me that they took care with this reissue, I took the bait and bought it. The experience has been nothing short of a revelation!

Warning: this record will make all of your other records sound bad in comparison. I've never heard a record where it sounded like I was in the studio with the musicians, but this one does. If I close my eyes, I'd swear that Judee was singing right in my ear. The subtle production details on "The Kiss" (the way that her double-tracked voice goes in and out of phase) and "The Donor" (which suddenly sounds less like the eight-minute Gregorian chant I was used to on MP3 and more like a post-rock masterpiece 15 years before post-rock was a thing) aren't merely present but jump to life.

It is my hope that the vinyl industry takes note of what the folk at Intervention are doing and that pressings like this become the industry standard moving forward. This is not a cheap pressing, but it is everything that an audiophile could hope for. The packaging is beautiful and solid, the records are strikingly quiet when the needle is placed, and the music has all of the warmth and presence of a live performance. The overall quality of Intervention's pressings are worth every penny and then some.

Buy this and hear just how great music can sound on vinyl, but don't blame Intervention Records if the rest of your collection suddenly pales in comparison!

My first experience with Judee Sill was in my college radio station production room, listening to her first album with headphones on and absolutely entranced from the first notes of "Crayon Angels" to the lush final notes of "Abracadabra." It was years before I even realized she'd recorded a second album. By then CD was the dominant form, and I tracked down "Heart Food" and enjoyed the disc, but except for "The Donor," the transcendent finale that may be the single most beautiful recording to come out of the 1970s, I didn't think it was quite as strong an album as "Judee Sill." Until now …

Having finally purchased a fine Audio Technica turntable a year ago, I had rediscovered that with the right equipment analog music on vinyl sounds much more brilliant, clear and lifelike to my ears. My interest in hearing "Heart Food" on vinyl was piqued by Christopher Hayes' review "This may be the best sounding record that you ever hear!" I'm writing this minutes after hearing this double-LP (45 rpm!) record for the first time, and Mr. Hayes' headline is not hyperbole: It is.

I was transported back to that night almost 50 years ago when I was introduced to Judee Sill, and I heard in this vinyl presentation what the CD had somehow dampened – the purity and honesty of her voice and her music, not just in "The Donor" but all the way through, from the delicate guitar intro to "There's a Rugged Road" through the whimsical insanity of the "hidden track" that ends the record. It's heartbreaking that Sill was taken from us prematurely, but what she left behind are two masterpieces, and thanks to Intervention Records we can hear them in all their fullness and glory.
