1975年に発表されたハケットのソロ第一作。ピーター・ガブリエルが離脱した後の最初のアルバムである『トリック・オブ・ザ・テイル』の前に発表されている。凄まじいほどのクオリティであり、ハケットのソロでも個人的には最高傑作である。何しろトップを飾るインストのAce of Wandsが素晴らしい。そのドラマティックな展開、12弦のギター、情感溢れるギター・ソロ、ハケットの代表曲Everydayにも勝るとも劣らない名曲である。そして、ハケットのソロではあるが当時のジェネシス的な音空間を見事に表現している。フィル・コリンズが歌っているStar of Siriusなどは、『Wind and Wuthering (静寂の嵐)』に入っていたとしても極めてしっくりするようなジェネシス的な楽曲である。ドラムはおそらく全てフィル・コリンズが叩いている。ちなみにマイケル・ラザーフォードも参加していて、アルバム最後を飾るShadow of the Hierophantでは作曲者としてハケットとともにクレジットされている。ラザーフォードもStar of Sirius以外のベースはすべて弾いていると推察される。どうりで、ジェネシスっぽい訳だ。

ここのアルバムで入っている曲のいくつかは、『眩惑のブロードウェイ』の過酷なツアーの合間につくられたものだそうだ。ホテルの部屋で正気を維持するためにつくったそうだが、ハケットにとって、曲をつくる機会をツアーとかで奪われるのは、相当のストレスだったようだ。録音はこのツアーが終わって一ヶ月も経ったか経たなかった時だそうだ。ジェネシスの延長線上にあるような素晴らしいアルバムでジェネシス・ファンは必聴である。私はAbacab以降のジェネシスのアルバムより、このアルバムの方が好きである。イギリスでは4週間トップ100入りし、最高で26位まで上っている。

私は、アルバムは多数大人買いしていますがコアなジェネシスファンではありません。だから彼がどれだけジェネシスに思い入れがあろうが私には関係なにのですが、彼のアルバムは曲の多様さだけでなくその深さもなかなかだという事だけはわかります。クラシカル、ポップ、プログレ、ジャズ、メタル。何でも出来る人ですね。テクニックはイロイロ聴き方のレベルで意見は分かれるでしょうが、極めて聴く側に軸足をおいています。いつ聴いても古臭くないのはそのせいか。

やはりジェネシスを引っ張って来たのはこの人なんだなぁ〜と思う。ピーターガブリエルの世界観と若干違う感じだがジェネシスサウンドの要なんだよな、このアルバムが出た時飛びつきました、あぁ聴いてよかった〜て感動しました。ステーブハケット万歳。

　私的な話題だが、筆者は、１９８５年に、初めて、ステレオを買って、「イエス」や、「スティーヴ・ハケット氏」の、ＬＰを、購入した。
　当時、スティーヴ・ハケット氏の、1stソロ・アルバムの、国内盤「侍祭の旅」は、廃盤であり、輸入盤で、買った。渋谷の、タワーレコード店で、イギリス盤が、手に入った。ひょっとしたら、価格は、２５００円程だったかもしれない。スティーヴ・ハケット氏の、他の輸入盤よりも、高価だったのが、印象的だった。後に、ハケット夫人となる、Miss キム・ポー女史が、手がけた、夢幻的なイラストによる、ジャケットも、綺麗である。

　世間では（もしくは、この国では）、スティーヴ・ハケット氏の、ソロ・アルバムと言えば、この、1stソロ・アルバム「Voyage of the Acolyte」が、有名だし、人気も有る。筆者は、特に、ジェネシスは、聴いていないので、あまり、大それた事は、言えないが、ジェネシス在籍時代の、１９７５年に、発表された、当盤は、ジェネシスの、バンド・トーンと、スティーヴ・ハケット氏の、独自の、高貴な、音楽世界とが、混じりあっている。まだ、スティーヴ・ハケット氏としての、サウンドは、確立しておらず、その世界が、充溢するのに、3rdソロ・アルバムの「Spectral Mornings」まで、待たなければ、いけなかったのだ。
　閑話休題。当1stソロ・アルバムは、「コンセプト・アルバム」である。それは、1.Ace of Wands で、様々な、テーマ（主題）が、提示される事でも、明らか。アルバムの、各曲は、それぞれ、主題に沿って、展開する。
　－それは、ちょうど、１７世紀のイギリス貴族の、夢の旅路の、思い出話に、耳を傾けているか、の様だ。

　スティーヴ・ハケット氏の、ソロ・アルバムは、様々、有るが、Charisma レーベル時代の、まだ、ハケット氏も、若かった頃が、素晴らしい。
　念の為に、Charisma レーベル時代の、スティーヴ・ハケット氏の、ソロ・アルバムを、列挙して置く。
　1st 「ヴォヤージ・オブ・ジ・アカライト　＋２」（１９７５年）
　2nd 「プリーズ・ドント・タッチ　＋３」（１９７８年）
　3rd 「Spectral Mornings - standard」（１９７９年）
　4th 「Defector (+DVD)」（１９８０年）
　5th 「キュアード　＋３」（１９８１年）
　6th 「ハイリー・ストラング　＋３」（１９８２年）
　以上、ハイビット・リマスタリング盤で、廉価価格である。ほとんどは、去年の、２０１６年の発売だが、一年後の今（２０１７年９月現在）、入手困難な、「廃盤寸前」、と言う事態である。

タレント・ピーター・ガブリエルの存在の絶対化、バンドのシンフォニック化、大音量化の割りを食った形で、沈黙を余儀なくされていたハケットの１ｓｔソロ。フィル・コリンズとマイケル・ラザフォードは参加しているが、当時の「改革派」のトニー・バンクスは参加していないことが象徴的だ。内容は「月影の騎士」から、ガブリエルが気に入らなかったテイクを集めてなおかつ、それらを一途に展開したようなもので、たぶん「月影信者」の中でも好悪が分かれるだろう。当時在籍中ということもあり、演奏と楽曲の作りこみ工程の面での、底の薄さは見られるものの、裏を返せば、バンドと掛け持ちでここまでの作品を作ってしまった、ハケットの力量と執念には敬服せざるを得ない。

L’impianto dell’opera è originale, si sente una vena creativa meno condizionata dalle logiche del mercato discografico e una maggiore sperimentazione.
Suonano tutti i Genesis tranne Banks, c’è il flauto del fratello, una batteria in evidenza e delle belle linee di basso, oltre alle chitarre, naturalmente!
Nei lavori successivi si discosterà dal prog avvicinandosi al pop statunitense in voga negli anni ‘80.

The idea of Steve Hackett leaving Genesis and having a solo career was I'm sure to the dismay of many Genesis fans because, in my honest opinion, I believe he was a key ingredient to their signature style. Those quirky guitar parts and soaring solos (like in his trademark and highly lauded solo in "Firth Of Fifth" from Genesis' 1973 album "Selling England by the Pound") are without a doubt some of the highlights of progressive rock guitar in the genre's 1970s heyday. As things turned out, "Voyage of the Acolyte" was exactly what Hackett needed to release as this, in his own words, gave him the confidence to strike out on his own. What led to Hackett's departure from Genesis was that time and time again his own musical ideas were being shot down by Genesis members in favor of their own ideas. This constant onslaught of rejection led Hackett to finally quit Genesis in 1976 after recording the live album "Seconds Out." For many people, myself included, this is where I departed from the Genesis train, although "..And Then There Were Three" was an 'okay' album with a few good songs, but not substantial or 'proggy' enough for my taste as it was clear that Genesis were heading into a pop direction.

Anyway, that's enough background for now. "Voyage of the Acolyte" is considered by many to be a 'lost' Genesis album. I only partly agree with this as I think this album has more of Hackett's stamp on it than Genesis'. From the very beginning, we launch into "Ace of Wands," which is an uptempo piece and goes through a myriad of moods and styles before finally deciding where to end up. I don't mean this in a negative way of course. The piece just jumps around a lot and it's thrilling to hear. I won't go through the whole album's tracklist, but I'm not joking when I say the whole album is fantastic from start to finish. Some may find a weak moment here or there, but I can find absolutely none. I heard some people complain about Hackett's vocals on "The Hermit." Quite frankly, I like the vocals and I think they match the atmosphere of the piece.

All of the musicians are amazing. It's nice to have guest appearances by Genesis bandmates Phil Collins and Mike Ruttherford and Collins sounds especially good on "Star of Sirius". Rutherford played bass on the entire album I believe with the exception of "Star of Sirius." Also making an appearance, and on many subsequent Hackett solo albums, is his brother, John who plays flute, synthesizer, and some percussion. Other musicians include John Acock on synthesizer, Mellotron, piano, and harmonium, Sally Oldfield on vocals for the song "Shadow of the Hierophant," Robin Miller on oboe and English horn ("Star of Sirius," "The Hermit"), Nigel Warren-Green on cello ("The Hermit"), Percy Jones on bass ("A Tower Struck Down"), and John Gustafson on bass ("Star of Sirius").

This particular reissue has been remastered to perfection by Caroline Music and, for my money, is the recording to get. There will be a newer 'deluxe edition' issued with a Steven Wilson 5.1 stereo remix at some point either this year or next year, but I have found that Wilson's tinkering with the audio of the original recordings to not be sufficiently better than the previous issues in most cases and I can really do without them (as nice as the packing may be for these particular issues). They're not worth the extra money, but you can happily disagree with me and more power to you if you enjoy them.

If you're a fan of progressive rock and you love Hackett's work with Genesis, you need this album in your collection. He went on to do many other fantastic recordings, but there's nothing quite like his first.

La claque lors de la première écoute en 1975!! L'intro phénoménale de "Ace of Wand" puis ce rythme bancal plus près du jazz-rock que de Genesis. Et le son de la guitare, véritable signature sonore du maitre.. L'éminence grise du groupe de prog qui venait de perdre son âme avec le départ de Gabriel réussit son premier opus d'une carrière qui s'avèrera longue et sans compromis commercial (contrairement à Collins, Gabriel ou Rutherford).Artiste libre il le montre déja là dans cet opus qui se démarque assez bien de Genesis (malgré la présence de Collins et Rutherford), recèle tous les ingrédients de son oeuvre future : maitrise instrumentale bien sûr ("Ace of wand", "Star of Cirus", surprises dans les compositions (le pilonnage des basses de "A Tower struck Down"), les références classiques ("The Hermit"), un sens de la mélodie simple ("Hands of the Priestess") et ausssi il faut bien le reconnaitre des trucs un peu chiants ("The Lovers"), une voix un peu fade ("The Hermit") et surtout des envolées sublimes comme le final de "Shadow Of The Hierophant", poignant comme les 4 coups de la 5ème de Beethoven ou le "Rex Tremandous" du Requiem de Mozart, le truc qui vous poignarde le coeur à vous en faire couler les larmes, l'humanité dans quelques notes de musique....
Ce disque est bien évidemment un incontournble de la musique prog, un peu hors du temps même si plus de 35 ans plus tard quelques sonorités "datent" (les bandes passées à l'envers").Désormais Hackett, glabre et debout, sur scène s'impose comme un guitariste incontournable, exemplaire de la scène rock, simplement!
PS :la version remasterisée respecte absolument la perfection de l'enregistrement original. A ce propos, les premiers enregistrements analogiques "digitallisés" furent une véritable calamité (platitude, froideur du son, aigues tronquées, basses anémiques..)et globalement étaient pire que les originaux. Sinon les bonus sont à peu près inutiles entre une version scénique un peu mollasse de "Ace of Wand" et une version (trop?) longue de "Shadow of the Hierophant".
