#1 "Crusher Destroyer"

Fantastic album, very aggressive
Mastodon's first official release, and it's a very raw and aggressive sound, which is a very big departure from their current sound but still sounds very unique. Troy's powerful vocals, Brann's crazy drumming and Brent & Bill's crushing riffs are perfect recipe for a super heavy album. And amongst the heavy songs, there are still some slower and more chill songs and sections that offer a nice breather in the album, in songs such as Trilobite and Elephant Man.
Personal favourites are March of the Fire Ants, Where Strides the Behemoth, and Mother Puncher.

My Favourite From Mastodon
I find this record to be raw and unconstrained; similar and in the same vein as Megadeth's "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!"
This album contains 11 tracks that are a mixture of straight forward and groovy songs like the opener, Workhorse, and Mother Puncher. Slow tempo'd songs like "Trainwreck", "Trilobite", and "Elephant Man". Blitzkriegs like "Burning Man" and "Trampled Under Hoof" are also present. The first four tracks are an absolute ensemble, but I find it to be start and stop after that point.
The opener, Crusher Destroyer, is an absolute killer track. It emerges in a no-holds-barred fashion and gets you right into the action; but more importantly it piques curiosity for the remainder and direction of the album.
My biggest gripe with this album is how it handles transitioning, which I find to be poor. 'Start, stop, start, stop, fast, slow, fast, slow' is how I describe the song ordering on the album; very much akin to "The Hunter". This is something I believe Mastodon has improved on with albums like "Leviathan" and "Once More 'Round The Sun".
Brann Dailor's drumming is a standout on this record and I don't believe he's shined this bright on future Mastodon releases; this is the Brann Dailor showcase. Fills that come out of left field, even on slow songs. Blasts that are utilized conservatively (save for "Burning Man"), but most importantly is the creativity that Brann employs. He's unpredictable and I believe that makes the listen a more stimulating one, for that along with other reasons.
The vocals on the record are mainly performed by Troy, with Brent taking the front seat at some points and Bill assisting at others. Vocals on this album are used in a different way from future releases due to the spatial gap. There are sometimes three to four minute sections void of any vocal work. This really sets the vocals as an equal part to the instruments but doesn't stand in the front during the whole time.
Overall I'd recommend this album to someone who obviously loves metal, but is at the same time looking for something chaotic that doesn't feel like it's on rails. This album is the most out of control record that at the same time has itself 'together'.

Classic Mastodon
Mastodon has had so much going for them since Remission came out: they've put out five more albums (four on a major label), put out a couple of live albums, DVD's, and have managed to stay underground (somewhat) as they've spent the last 8-9 years on a major label. Most would say Remission was their only great album, but I'm sure those who say that probably wish Mastodon were more like AC/DC or Slayer: putting out the same kind of album every 2-3 years or however long it takes. Mastodon are undoubtedly not that kind of band. While their earlier albums are great, their most recent stuff easily counts as essential listening. That's not to say that Remission isn't a good album. As I said, it is great. It's classic Mastodon. While the original sounded great, you can kind of see why they'd want to remix & remaster it. I remember reading an interview when the discussion was about making Leviathan, and Troy Sanders mentioned that his bass wasn't too audible on Remission, so they made it a point that it needed to be heard on Leviathan. I'd say there's no problem hearing it now. Don't worry about any distortion/loudness/whatever, you're safe there. I highly recommend picking this up.
