The music of das Christelflein conveys a beautiful Christmas winter atmosphere of simplicity freshness and innocence. There are two excellent recordings that are from CPO and Orfeo. Both are beautiful sensitive atmospheric imaginative performances and well recorded. The CPO cds are of a live performance. The Orfeo cds are of a recording by Bavarian Radio. The narration is spoken by Andrea Sokol on the CPO and by a Alois Fink on the Orfeo. The CPO recording has a nicer picture.
The work was premiered around the same time as the opera Palestrina in 1917 and shares with some of the composer's other works the idea that where there is sorrow or grief there can also be resolution. Das Christelflein is a Christmas fable that includes the Christ Child but it is not precisely as in the bible version. Father Christmas and Christmas trees are not in the bible.
The CPO recording of Pfitzner's second opera die Rose vom Liebesgarten has all of the text printed in German and English. Sadly the accompanying booklets for das Christelflein summarise the story but neither the CPO recording nor the one on Orfeo have the libretto and English translation.
The libretto can be purchased separately as a leaflet, search for

and is in German only despite being listed as in English. The leaflet has Ilse von Stach's text of the sung sections and spoken dialogue in the opera and is at least fairly helpful however on both the CPO and Orfeo cds of the opera the text by Stach is used for the sung parts but Stach's spoken dialogue is replaced by a narrator's text written by Alois Fink. (There was previously a version of das Christelflein as incidental music to Ilse von Stach's play).
