"Aeolian" is the heavier twin of the 2004 release "Fluxion". Both albums were recorded in one long session, which lasted from January 2004 until July 2005, in the band's own Ocean land studio. The album was mastered by Magnus Lindberg (CULT OF LUNA) at the Tonteknik studio in Umea, Sweden. While "Fluxion" mixed the orchestral and atmospheric side of it's predecessor "Fogdiver" with harsh vocals and complex metal passages, "Aeolian" develops all this fusion even further: The orchestral parts have been relegated to the background, the songs are heavier and more complex, and the arrangements are totally uncompromising. However, this is not necessarily the direction in which the band is headed, but a result of the choice of songs on offer - The Ocean won't move away from their epic orchestrations. In fact, on "Aeolian" the band wanted to experiment how a reduction to the classic line-up of guitar/bass/drums/vocals would work in the context of The Ocean. What came out is a dense, brutal album without unnecessary decorations, aiming straight for the throat. Despite it's heaviness, "Aeolian" is more accessible than the previous album, which might be due to the fact that the unavoidable monotony of "hard" vocals has been broken up by using a number of different voices. There are 6 singers on the album altogether, covering the entire spectrum of aggressive vocals. Guest vocalists include Tomas Hallbom of BREACH, Nate Newton of CONVERGE / OLD MAN GLOOM and the former COALESCE frontman Sean Ingram. Tomas Hallbom, who guests on 5 tracks, also appeared on stage with the band at selected shows last April, during which a few BREACH songs were covered. BREACH is one of The Ocean's main influences. Sean Ingram recorded the song "Queen of the Food-Chain", having the following to say about his participation: "if my rough takes at home are any indication, this will be my favourite guest appearance yet".

The Ocean Collective is the gift that keeps giving. Every album they have released has its own flavor and unique sound, and as a progressive metal fan, Aeolian stands as their heaviest work to date, and arguably their best. Songs like Une Saison En Enfer and One With The Ocean are powerful and are bound to induce excessive headbanging, yet other songs like Inertia balance the album out and make it an enjoyable experience.

What makes this band so great is their variety of musicians that have come and gone since 2002, and how each artist shaped the sound of the music into what it is today. In this record, several vocalists were featured, but the main stars of the show are Nico Webers and Meta Bünte, providing a range of high screams and low growls. Robin Staps provides beautifully written guitar riffs as usual. However, the display of talent that stuck out to me the most is the drummer - Torge Liessmann.

Holy cow. Torge Liessman's drum work in this album features some of the hardest progressions I've ever tried to replicate on my drum set. Not only can Liessman pull off blast beats with ease, but his ability to transition back and forth from triplets to blast beats within seconds of each other makes him a TEXTBOOK progressive metal drummer, on par with some of the greatest like Danney Carey from Tool or Sean Reinert from Cynic.

Overall, Aeolian is a killer record that hasn't received nearly enough recognition. I rarely get to see or hear songs from this album played live, other than The City In The Sea. It would be awesome to see a remaster or re-recording of this album, possibly with the original vocalists returning in collaboration with the great Loïc Rosetti. Otherwise, this remains one of my favorite CDs I own, from one of my favorite bands of all time. Keep up the good work!

Una delle opere prime del gruppo che ha dato alle stampe capolavori come Pelagial, Precambrian, Heliocentric e, un po' staccato, Anthropocentric. Bello ma non il migliore, comprato per amor di collezionismo.
