As the leader of one the most vital and volatile bands of the British Invasion, Ray Davies may also have been one of the genre's most underappreciated, often playing second fiddle to the likes of Lennon, McCartney, and Jagger, but never failing to reignite the flame on a now-legendary songwriting caldron. More than a decade since the Kinks' last release, Davies makes his virgin foray into solo artistry with 13 songs that reverberate with the wistfulness and introspection that have forever been his trademark. It doesn't take long to detect, as the guitar/bass crescendo and tomorrow-will-be-better lyrics make "Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)" a singalong halfway through its 4:21. And then the world once again is put under Davies's uncanny surveillance: his pal Mr. Brown in the country-singed "Next Door Neighbour," "The Tourist" hobnobbing in New Orleans (where Davies makes an American home), and eras of lost acquaintances in "All She Wrote," a Kinks-ish acoustic rocker. オリジナル・スタジオ・アルバムとしては、『フォビア』以来と言う事になるので、なんと１３年ぶりの新作となるのがこのアルバムである。

　長年のキンクス・ファンとしては、正に待ちに待った１枚と言う事になる。これほど期待と不安に満ちた気持ちで聞くレコードと言うのも本当に久々である。

　そして内容はと言うと、長年のキンクス・ファンを安心させるような、素晴らしい作品に仕上がっている。正に、あのキンクス・ワールドで一杯の充実した内容になっている。是非御一聴を。

　レイ・デイヴィスはやっと動き出したようだ。願わくば、キンクスとして再活動し、来日して頂きたい。一言で言うと、キンクスのライヴと言うのは、史上最強のライヴと言う事だからだ！

　それにしても、シングル・カットした曲をシークレット・トラックにするなど、いかにもレイ・デイヴィスらしい。ひねりがききすぎている。まだまだ、大丈夫だ。

こんなに嬉しいのはキース・リチャーズの１stソロアルバム以来かも。（そういえば、ちょっとキースみたいなところもありますね。）

サウンド的には正直、ひと昔前のアメリカン・ロックみたいな大味な部分もあるけれど（もしかしてわざとかも。）、それでもどの曲もレイ・デイヴィスにしか書けない曲ばかり。とりあえず１・２・７・１０曲目なんかは一発で気に入ったのでここらへんから徐々に垣根を拡げて聞いていこうかなという感じです。

MUSWELL HILLBILLIESもそうだけど、これも本当に良さがわかるにはもう少し時間がかかりそう。

でもそれって、ファンとしてはすごく嬉しいことなんだよね。

キンクス（The Kinks）のレイ・デイビス（Ray Davies）のソロアルバム。これまでにもソロでのプロジェクトはたくさんあったし、2枚アルバムも出ているが、いわゆる企画ものでない純粋なソロアルバムとして発表されるのは初めてってことになるのかな（日本盤の帯には初ソロと表記されている）。しっとり始まるかと思いきやしっかりロック。一度通して聴いた時にはピンとこなかったが、何度も聴いているとじわじわ効いてきて「あ、いいなぁ」と感じる。彼の曲っていつもそうだ。

日本盤ボーナストラックは「London Song」。まるでディランを思わせるようなトーキングソング。ラップのようでバンド入りなのでとても若く感じる。

日本盤を購入したが、レイ・デイビスの場合は歌詞対訳があると助かる。少し哀愁の漂う歌詞は健在。彼の書く詞はもうイギリスの風物詩といっていいくらいのもの。でも我々日本人には決して分かりやすいものではないので、自分なんか多分、彼の魅力の半分も分かってはいないんだろうなと思う（涙）。このアルバムには現在のアメリカ生活も反映されているのだろうか。

　レイ・デイヴィスの初のスタジオ・ソロ・アルバムということだが、久しぶりのキンクスのアルバムといってもおかしくない、いつものメロディーと皮肉に満ちた歌詞。キンクスのファンであるならば十分満足できるだろうし、ファンでなくても「アザー・ピープルズ・ライヴズ」や「オーヴァー・マイ・ヘッド」は必聴だろう。「アザー・ピープルズ・ライヴズ」がスティーヴ・ミラー・バンドの「アブラカダブラ」に似ているのは気質の似た者同士ということか。

レイ・デイビスの新作は、個人的にはかなりの良いタイミングで発表されて、かつ内容もドンぴしゃです。

ちょうど作年末に購入して気に入った「スリープウォーカー」とも相通じる内容だからです。

さらにそれよりも深化され、且つ研ぎ澄まされていると感じたことも。特にアップ〜ミドルテンポな曲でのソリッドなアレンジと歌唱は出色。

I have been an on-again, off-again Kinks fan. I love their early stuff, love Come Dancing, not crazy about Low Budget, then lost track of them after the '80's. I only got back into "them" when I heard Ray Davies was playing last year in New York. I never made it to the show, but I swore if he ever came back I would go. (I'd only seen him / the Kinks once before, back in 1980.) So he comes around again in support of his new album - first solo album. So I get tickets, and then get the album. At first I am not overly impressed - it sounds like Ray Davies. But then I listen to it again a week or two later, and then I really start getting into it. And then it starts to become a truly WONDERFUL album. He is in top form, his voice is great, the band is terrific and subtle at the same time, and there is a depth to this album I find to be truly heartfelt. There is a touch of Neil Young or Dylan or both... but only because Ray Davies belongs with them. He is one of the GREATS. And then I saw him (coincidentally the same night as another reviewer) in nyc on march 24th. He was spectacular. The music from the new album was EQUALLY as terrific as hearing All Day and All of the Night, and Lola. If you have any reservations, put them aside - this is a GREAT Ray Davies album. "The Getaway" is epic, "Thanksgiving Day" is amazing in its imagery, and "The Tourist" is multi-faceted. There are many other great songs on the CD. The production aspects are excellent. Good for him!

It's not every day you get the chance to buy a new album from Ray Davies. This is his first ever solo album of new material since the Kinks released their last new album of new material some 12 years ago. Davies is one of this country's finest modern day songwriters. If he had only written Waterloo Sunset and nothing else, he would have gone down in rock history as a great songwriter. But we all know he has achieved much more and is a cornerstone of modern rock and pop music. This new album contains a dozen little masterpieces including the classic Stand Up Comic (which would be a hit if it was released), The Tourist and many more. When most, if not all, of his peers have forgotten how to write a great tune and lyrics, Ray has proved he can still cut it. Mixing great and wry lyrics plus excellent arrangements, this is a must have album for Kinks fans as well as anyone who has loved the Kinks over the years. If you read this Ray, thanks Mate from all of us, this is very special stuff; a different league.
