And so it is with "Ballad of the Broken Seas", an album length collaboration between Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan.There's a similar contrast between Isobel's aching, pristine chill of a voice and Lanegan's wounded, regret-stewed burr.

While duets have been often turned into pairings that dilute both participants into toothless blobs, that's not the case here. Scottish singer Isobel Campbell, formerly of Belle & Sebastian here teams up with Mark Lanegan, formerly of Screaming Trees and collaborator with Queens of the Stone Age. It's a classic beauty and the beast alignment, with Lanegan's gruff baritone sounding like the protector of a beautiful little bird. This is a combination that's been done with success previously by the likes of Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra, and Serge Gainsbourg with Jane Birkin. The instrumental settings further underscore the gorgeously weathered timelessness of these dozen songs. This is music that straddles several centuries, updating traditions with confidence and subtle invention. --David Greenberger

今年になって超久しぶりにあの渋谷さんのラジオ番組を聴いていると低音と高音のボーカルが絡んで心地よいアルバムの紹介がありました。歌詞を確認すると結構シビアな内容。イザベル・キャンベルは僕の要チェックボーカリストに加わりました。

元「スクリーミング・トゥリー」「クイーンズ・オブ・ザ・ストーン・エイジ」のマーク・ラネガンと、イザベル・キャンベルのコラボ。

「抑え」の美学が効いてます。あらゆる要素が穏やかに睦ましく調和した、素晴らしく完成度の高いアルバムです。

サイケやハードロック・フォーキー風味ながらもあくまでも淡々とした曲調の中、

マークの低く土臭〜い歌声と、イザベルのドリーミングな歌声が絶妙にからみます。

甘過ぎない、渋過ぎない、少しフェチズムを感じるおとなのポップバラード。

V2から2006年にリリースされた二人のコラボレーションアルバム。Isobel Campbellの透明感あふれるヴォーカルとMark Laneganの低く呟くヴォーカルの組み合わせが意外だけれど気持ちいい。関係ないけど、コレはマスタリングが大変だっただろうなぁと想像。。

ギターのアルペジオと淡いメロディーに覆われたフォーキィなトラック群とそれを支える土着的なパーカッションの組み合わせが美しい。冒頭のDeus Ibi EstはBrigitte Fontaineと一緒にオンガクを奏でるAreski Belkacemのような雰囲気。アルバム全体の雰囲気を上手く凝縮した1曲。False Husbandは抑制されたトレモロギターとややトラッドなストリングスのビターな3拍子。Ballad Of The Broken SeasはMark Laneganの真摯な歌が印象的。Ramblin' Manはバスキングシーンの雰囲気を持ち合わせたIsobel Campbell的には意外なトラック。粗いドラムと懐古的なメロディーがウマく云えないけど映像的。It's Hard To Kill A Bad ThingはI⇒V/I⇒IV/Iの冒頭の展開が素晴らし過ぎる。このコード進行が個人的には相当好き。穏やかなストロークとパーカッションの美しいインスト。この曲が一番好きかも。アルバム中では珍しいシンプルな8ビートとユニゾンで歌う二人のメロディーが印象的なHoney Child What Can I Do?は、ホントはビターな曲だと思うけれどドリーミィなアレンジとIsobel Campbellの声でとてもカラフルに聴こえる。美しい。

Questo disco mi ha preso e sorpreso fin dai primi ascolti, amo da sempre Mark Lanegan ma non avrei mai detto che potesse fare un disco così bello in coppia ad un'artista così diversa per genere e formazione musicale...Ed invece la magia è servita: Folk, blues e country fusi insieme con la sottile presenza del violino di Isobel, semplicemente stupendo.
Ascoltare per credere.

When this first came out it seemed a bit odd - Young Scottish folk star Campbell paired with Seattle Indie veteran Mark Lanegan? Not a natural pairing. But the music they have produced is superb. From the pen of Campbell, we are presented with deep and moving tales of people and lives broken by love. Campbell's voice floats and dances ethereally around Lanegan's gruff, worldly rumblings, with a spare backing that gives this a timeless, otherworldly atmosphere.

Atmosphere is the word. It is so thick you could cut it with a knife at times. Dense and smokey, with an aftertaste of whiskey and a feeling of regret.

This is a great record of slow burning blues/soul with a jazzy/folky tinge. Thoughtful music, made with conviction by two people who clearly enjoy working with each other and creatively sparking off each other. An album for those long nights alone with painful memories and a bottle of something that burns the throatand dulls the pain of the broken heart.

A classic album, if you like this then check out the follow ups `Sunday At Devil Dirt' and `Keep Me In Mind Sweetheart'. Here's hoping that there's more to come?
