Calvin Keys returns to Wide Hive for his seventh solo release, Vertical Clearance! The Bay Area virtuoso guitarist is well known for his performances and recordings with greats such as Ray Charles, John Handy, Bobby Hutcherson, Eddie Marshall, Sonny Stitt, Pharaoh Saunders, Joe Henderson and Leon Williams.

With outstanding contributions from jazz legends Sonny Fortune, Phil Ranelin, Doug Carn and Babatunde, guitarist Calvin Keys' new album draws upon their collective roots (which span classic cult labels Strata East, Tribe and Blackjazz) to create an authentic and inspiring recording. Highlighted by dark melodies and driving rhythms, Keys' playing has somehow become more precise and edgier over time.

元々、７０年代？にブラック・ジャズでバリバリスピリチュアルなジャズ、ギターを披露していた人だけれど、未だに現役なのが嬉しい。ヒップ・ホップ勢に再評価されているから、こうしたアルバムが届けられるのかな。親爺の余裕の中、執拗に静かにフレーズをくり返し、とにかくヒップでクールなアルバムです。

Calvin Keys solidified his place as the elder statesman of jazz-funk guitar with this 2006 gem. Keys was never the flashiest guitarist, nor was he an experimentalist. He was, and is all about the groove. You don't need a flurry of notes. You don't need to show how quickly you can play scales or how convoluted you can make your chord changes. You just need the right note at the right time. And you need to play it with authority. That's what Keys does, reliably. Drawing on his 1970's jazz-funk-rock roots from his days on the Black Jazz roster, Keys adds some nice flourishes here, including some Latin influences that stand out more than on his other albums, but mostly just keeps that deep, dark groove going for 52 minutes. Scofield and others may be more famous, perhaps for their experimentation and perhaps for their flashiness, but Keys cuts through the nonsense. The horns are well-arranged, as the Wide Hive people do, and they consistently provide Keys with a refined counterpoint to balance his cutting guitar work. This is the path that George Benson should have followed. Instead he got famous. OK. Fine. Those of us who want our jazz-funk uncut (sorry-- I had to) still have Calvin.
