Wgnerの最後の作品で、作曲家が死を迎える前年の1782年に完成され、その年に初演された。さすがのWagnerにとっても、このオペラを完成させるのに、20年以上の時間が必要だった。例によってWagnerが作詞作曲しているのだが、底本としたのは1200年前後に作られたパルジファルの詩、そして聖杯伝説であるようだ。

このオペラの演奏は、1903年までバイロイト音楽祭によってに独占されていた。その理由として、Wagnerがこの作品が世俗的なものになってほしくないと希望していたこと、そして自分が死んだ後に家族を支える収入となるとWagnerが考えていたことが、挙げられている。Wagnerの夫人であったCosimaは、夫が亡くなった後もこのオペラが舞台で演奏される場所をバイロイトだけに限定していたようだ。舞台以外では、ロンドン、ニュー・ヨーク、アムステルダムでも演奏されていたと言う。そして1903年、舞台で演奏することはバイロイトに限定しない、と言う裁判所の判決により、ようやくニュー・ヨークのMetropolitan Opera Houseで演奏されたようだ。その舞台には、バイロイトで歌っていた歌手が登場したと言う。だがCosimaは、Metの演奏に関わった人物がバイロイトに戻れないように図ったと言う。けれどもこれ以降、このオペラは世界各地のオペラ・ハウスで演奏されるようになったと言う。Cosimaは長生きしたけれども、この時には既に70歳を超えていた。亡夫の作品が世界で演奏されることを複雑な気持ちで眺めていただろう。

Thielemann、Domingoをはじめとした歌手陣、Wiener States Opera、さすがである。

Placido Domingo plus latin que germanique (toujours d'une musicalité tout à fait exceptionnelle) ne remet pas en question les interprétations d'un Melchior, ou d'un Windgassen qui restent des références absolues, mais il confère à Parsifal une chaleur et une dimension que nous ne connaissions pas plus poches de la nature "humaine" que de la nature sacrée du Chevalier. Je retrouve le Domingo que j'avais pu voir et entendre à Madrid.
Waltraud Meier, wagnérienne accomplie, elle est dans la lignée des grandes Kundry pour ne citer que Martha Mödl ou Christa Ludwig...
le reste de la distribution donne à l'ensemble une homogénéité que nous ne retrouvions pas forcément dans d'autres enregistrements.
Quant à la direction de Christian Thielemann, certes appliquée ne me semble pas être la référence absolue.
En conclusion, si ce n'est pas "un must", cet enregistrement fera cependant date et restera, à mon sens, une des versions de référence.

Thielemann's DG Parsifal 'live' from Vienna (spliced together from several performances) is a fine solution to the 'live' vs 'studio' recording of this magnificent masterpiece. I have always preferred it live on the hoof, especially from Bayreuth, but also, notably, from the Deutsche Oper Berlin with Thielemann in 1998, an even finer performance than this DG set, but this will do nicely.

There are two notable performances worth preserving on this set, the first is, obviously, Plácido Domingo's 2nd commercially available Parsifal, the first being with Levine with Jessye Norman at the Met, also on DG, excruciatingly conducted by an especially somnolent Levine. A very top-class affair that never takes wing or discovers a shred of magic within itself. Beautifully sung, especially James Morris's Amfortas, but otherwise an also-ran best left for the discount used-bin find at rock bottom prices, for the completist only.

I groaned when I saw the cast list for this release. Oh gawd not another Waltraud Kundry THEN oh gawd Plácido in yet another farewell circus act in a role he is FAR to elderly to bring off. But then there was Thielemann and the Vienna Philharmonic and Waltraud Meier IS a great singer and a consummate actress and her voice has worn well, and there is Falk Struckmann's Amfortas. How bad could it be? Not bad at all, in fact it is probably going to come to be considered a 'classic' recording before too long.

The great glory of this recording is Thielemann's grasp of the whole thing; architecture, spirit, technical demand on the singers and orchestra, pacing, everything. The orchestra and chorus are splendid and the audience is virtually silent. No smokers' hack in evidence, unlike the Knappertsbusch from 1962 which would have made a great cancer society stop-smoking add well before its time.

Meier sounds the same as she did when she made her first recording of Kundry for Goodall way back in the early 1980s. Goodall wrecks it with his horribly slow tempi, especially in Act 2, but she was clearly a star in the making. She has recorded and filmed this role several times. This is her finest version I think. She sounds younger on Barenboim's studio set on Teldec but live in Vienna she embodies this highly complex and most fascinating of all Wagner characters.

I strongly recommend this Parsifal as a first recording for newbies who may have heard one or two other recordings or Met performances. The Karajan and Solti are also classical, though studio bound. And I say there is nothing like a Parsifal 'on-fire' on the stage live somewhere, especially Bayreuth, Berlin or Vienna.

In closing I have to mention, in passing, a recording I save to last in my spring Parsifal binge of 10 recordings, and reviews. This is a live radio broadcast from Salzburg in 2002. Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic with the greatest cast possible in this day and age. Thomas Moser, Urmana Violeta (perhaps the greatest Kundry of them all!), Hans Tschammer, Albert Dohmen and Eike Wilm Schulte.

Abbado made some of his finest recordings with Sony, WHY they didn't capture his Wagner for posterity will forever be a disgusting mystery to me. Abbado also did a wonderful Tristan und Isolde, with Ben Heppner and Deborah Polaski and Matti Salminen in Berlin in 1998. I hope Sony sees fit to get hold of these two performances and release them in memoriam to a great Wagnerian who was not recorded enough in this repertory.

Diese CD ist einfach ein muß für Klassische Musik Liebhaber. Würde ich mir immer wieder kaufen. Denn über Geschmack läßt sich bekannter weise nicht streiten.

Nothing wrong with the sound quality of this shrink-wrapped CD, although the plastic case was already broken prior to despatch- part of the plastic case is missing that allows the case to be opened & closed (if it was originally shrink-wrapped, then the vendor could not have known the case was broken). Although this isn't a serious problem, it means the case will always come away in your hands when opening it. Only a replacement case will do, which isn't easy to find for a 4-CD box.

This new Parsial is a truly visionary performance by Christian Thielemann who never fails to amaze. His reading is both pointillist in his illumination of score's mosaic of tone colors and, at the same time, contrapuntally aware of the music's complex layers. The set's only drawback is the unusual amount of stage noise that not only has been allowed to exist, but has been weirdly amplified rather than digitally squelched. Perhaps DG's engineers wanted an "Amfortas Effect" by lancing this ethereal performance with a shaft of the palpably metallic. What are those sounds? (on-stage swords?, an hare Krishna procession? ). For Parsifal fans like me, who love to bathe in the grandeur of the bell-brass-timpani processions of Act I, the shock of hearing "kling soars," like so many pieces of fallen silverware, is irritating enough to retire the entire set on a first hearing. I've since gotten over this distraction, but it has taken time and patience. As to the singers, this set offers an unconventional package. Placido Domingo, in spite of his odd accent, is a heartfelt and satisfying Parsifal. Throughout the four hours, the other singers give a fresh perspective to the expected role casting. One never finds Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz tedious or terminally vatic. His varied and athletic voice has a light upper register and an affectingly rich lower one. Waltraud Meier's Kundry is also full of surprises. Unexpected tenderness, and, turning on a dime, hysteria. In all, one never thinks of this Parsifal as the sanctimonious German Easter Parade that one sometimes hears. Thielemann effectively revitalizes this work without sacrificing an ounce of it's rich beauty. Keep this set with your Knappertsbusch and your Boulez.
