After being given only a limited UK release four years ago, Dumbing Up has been expanded and is finally available in the US. 2002 was also the year that Karl Wallinger's longrunning, critically lauded and commercially successful World Party fell apart. With this album out and a return to touring, a new generation can be fully exposed to the resonant powers of Wallinger's songs. The first few bars of the opening "Another Thousand Years" make his love of pop smarts, and specifically The Beatles (with its shades of "Baby You're a Rich Man") readily apparent. Elsewhere, there are evident strains of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and other pillars of well-crafted songs. What makes World Party -- essentially Karl Wallinger -- so compelling is that fact that those influences blend into a singular identity. The references are incorporated into a whole, absorbed, but not hidden. --David Greenberger

過去のPVやライブ映像などを収録したDVDとの2枚組みです。
以前にエンハンスドCD形式でCDに収録されていた物も多いですが、DVD画質で観られるのは嬉しいです。

特筆すべきは連続再生モードではなく、個別のPVを視聴するモードで見た時の映像です。
PVの選択画面で、既存曲・既存曲の別バージョン、未発表曲がランダムに映像付きでフルコーラスで
再生されるのですが、DVD本編よりもこちらの方が個人的にツボでした。
既存曲もCDより高音質ですし、未発表曲も凄く良いです。この部分のために購入しても良いくらいです。

CD本編も一捻りあって、曲順が変わっているだけでなく収録曲も一部差し替えられており、
2000年版のCDを持っている人でも損はないようになっています。

World Partyが好きな人には声を大にしてお勧めしたいです。

なんだこの情けない表情の子犬は？！という偏見だけで

聴くのをためらうのはいただけない（そう思うのはもしかして・・・）。

やっぱり中身が素晴しいんだ。

心を打つメロディも然ることながら、このアルバムに収録された数曲は

言葉に重点を置いている。まさに詩集のよう。

"You're A Hurricane,I'm A Caravan"-最高である。

So good to finally get this on vinyl. Ksrl Wallinger’s songwriting is astounding.

He very rarely puts out material but when he does it’s simply astounding. I recommend you buy this album as well as all the others.

well, i first bought this CD many many years ago and listened to it perhaps maybe a handful of times and someway or another it went missing. to tell you the truth, i didn't miss it all that much. time warp (or should i say Flash Forward) to the present! i recently re-aquired it on amazon and ive gained and all new appreciation for this disc! i now think it's as good or better then anything they've ever released! the music has a certain.......? maturity/sophistication about it but without be condescendingor boring. Lyrics are great as usual, song consistency and melodies/hooks are brilliant. some songs may take a few listens to fully appreciate. but you are diffently rewarded for the effort!

Or rather, Back To The Future.
One of the pleasures in listening to Karl Wallinger is always trying to determine the influences he draws on. This album has the usual Dylan, Stones and Beatles influences, including an almost direct steal from "Baby, You're a Rich Man" in "Another 1000 Years". But they are so artfully chosen and arranged, you don't mind, particularly when the hooks sink in.
Highlights, for me, are "What Does It Mean Now", "Best Place I've Ever Been" (which might be "Message in the Box" in Seinfeld's Bizarro world), "Who Are You" (his best Dylan impersonation) "All The Love That's Wasted", and "Always On My Mind" (Lennon impersonates Dylan, or vice versa).
Since this arrived, I've given it a half-dozen listens and I'm hooked. Given time, this might even dislodge Egyptology as my second-favorite WP disc. But definitely a must-purchase, and well worth the extra money for the import.
