Subtitled "A Sound Journey with Evelyn Glennie," German director Thomas Riedelsheimer's exquisite Touch the Sound is nominally a portrait of the Scottish musician known as "the first full-time solo percussionist." Glennie is certainly a fascinating subject. Profoundly deaf since childhood, she disdains the use of hearing aids and sign language, relying instead on lip reading and, more crucially, on the use of all of her senses, especially touch, to "hear" with her entire body. The film reveals Glennie's extraordinary skills in a variety of settings: playing a snare drum for bemused New Yorkers in cavernous Grand Central Station; improvising with guitarist Fred Frith in an empty warehouse in Cologne, Germany (their final vibes-guitar duet is one of the film's musical highlights); working with hearing-impaired students in her native Aberdeenshire; jamming with taiko drummers in Japan, and later delighting customers in a Tokyo bar with a spontaneous workout involving chopsticks, dishes, cans, and glassware (the woman can make music with virtually anything). But Riedelsheimer, who was also the film's editor and cinematographer, has a broader agenda here--namely, to intensify our awareness of the sounds that surround us everywhere, in every moment. From the streets of New York to the beaches of Santa Cruz, from the rocky Scottish coastline to a tranquil Japanese rock garden, he links heightened audio, as clear and natural as the best ECM recordings, to a succession of gorgeous visual images to create a balance of complex detail and overall sparseness, resulting in a kind of Zen feast. Even more of the same is found in a "making of" featurette that's the highlight of the bonus material, making Touch the Sound easily one of the most rewarding documentaries in recent years. --Sam Graham

タイトルからもわかるように、この映画は「音」をテーマにした映画だ。知っているけれど普段は気にとめてない音を、エヴリンと一緒に感じ、意識に刻み付けていく。
でも音だけではなく映像もすごくいい。想像を裏切ったり広げたりする画面の切り替えやアングルなどのカメラワーク。

あとは彼女と、旅で出会った人々との対話とか。

正直この映画のことを知るまでエヴリンのことを知らなかったけど、映画の中での彼女はとても魅力的で、才能に溢れ、好奇心旺盛で、ちょっとの不安を感じていて、とても人間らしい。
駅でスネアドラムを叩くシーン、和太鼓とのセッション、日本の街中で彷徨う瞳が特に印象的でした。

『Touch the Sound 〜そこにある音』（邦題）

初めからかなりグッとつかまれます♪

気がつくと彼女の音に引きこまれ、フワっと違う世界へ引き込まれそうになります。

毛穴が開き、途中嫌いな音の部分に耐えられなくなる位です。

見終わった後、外に行くと、こんなにも世の中に音があるのかと驚かされました。

遠くの音まではっきり聞こえ、あまりの音の多さに酔います。

私はダンスを習っているのですが、ダンスの先生が「耳で音を聞かない」という意味がこの映画で分かるのではなく、感じ取れます。

何も考えずに身体が反応したのです。

百聞は一見にしかず。

是非一度毛穴から音が入ってくる感覚を味わってみてはいかがでしょうか。

Un DVD molto bello ed interessante. Unico neo non ha sottotitoli in Italiano. Comunque immagini, suoni e dialoghi ok. Adatto per amanti dei ritmi ma soprattutto adatto a chi ama l'artista E. Glennie. Per me molto bello.

I've been a jazz drummer wannabe for over 45 years and count on various DVD's by the likes of Peter Erskine Antonio Sanchez, Jeff Hamilton, Bill Stewart all in a variety of groups and venues as inspiration in attempts to elevate my craft . I caught a tantalizing piece, the last 20 minutes or so of this mind blowing documentary when it aired on a local PBS station. Ms. Glennie a master percussionist who went deaf as a child, shares her insight and wonder at sound around us and how she integrates it into her music. A snare drum solo on the polished floor of the the star topped cavernous space of Grand Central Terminal is one of the greatest shows of percussion dynamics I've seen or heard. Highlight of the DVD is her sharing an industrial space with guitarist Fred Frith. The gritty abandoned post industrial setting becomes integral to the "in the moment" score; pipes, railings, beams, echoes, plus a broad range of various ethnic percussion instruments and Mr. Firths infinite ability to make stringed instruments break new sonic ground are alone worth the price of the DVD. Evelyn Glennie is mesmerizing, a genius if her craft, this DVD was one of the single most inspiring life of music treatise I've seen in decades and altered my practicing habits and playing since. The score, locations, photography and editing are brilliant. After two enthralling viewings a new personal direction, can't ask for more.

Art Matters: The Art of Knowledge/The Knowledge of Art

I am a huge fan of Dame Evelyn. I have had the privilege of having seen her live twice in performance with the Toronto Symphony. She is in such command of her instruments.

This documentary is more about how she copes as a deaf musician. It shows how she learned to "hear" through her body. We see this in performance when she plays barefoot or just in stocking feet. She "hears" through the vibrations.

Some of the besr scences are when she is working with another hard of hearing music student. Dame Evelyn tells the student to take off her hearing aid and feel the music.

We also see Dame Evelyn in performance in different contexts. I especially enjoyed the ncollaboration with Fred Frith.

In short, a great documentary about an extraordinary person who did not let hear deafness prevent her from being an extraordinary musician.
