イギリスからの音楽雑誌ＵＮＣＵＴの今月号付録ＣＤの中に潜んで我が家に届いたJOAN！気に入ったので早速アルバム購入。最高。聞けば聞くほどよくなります。CATPOWER+JONI MICHEL+COWBOY JUNKIES　私のお気に入り女性ヴォーカリストにランクインしました！

アントニー＆ザ・ジョンソンズやルーファス・ウェインライトのファンなら、ジョーン・ワッサー ( Joan Wasser ) の名前を覚えてる方も多いと思います。ルーファスのバックでバイオリンやギターをプレイしていたあのイカスおねえさんです。このリアル・ライフはジョーンの最初のフルアルバムで、余分なものは何一つ無いゆったりとしたポップスなんだけど、40 年代のトーチシンガーを思わせる歌声はとってもセクシーだし、ちょっと頭を使って聴ける曲の数々も素晴らしい ! 今までバックミュージシャンやセッションをかなりこなしてきただけあってアイディアの量が半端じゃなく、アレンジのキレにも驚かされまくりです ! ちなみに 5 曲目 "I DEFY" はアントニーとのデュエットで両者一歩も引きません。もしこのアルバムが気に入ったら最初のワイルドなミニアルバム Joan As Police Woman もオススメです。　大好き ! !

A rare gem. Near perfect. Well recorded, this trio produces a wonderful up-front, live sound. The title track soars, lyrically and musically - put this on a good stereo and prepare for goosebumps. Listen close and you'll hear occasional Rufus-style change-ups trimming out beautiful melodies and lyrics. This will remain one of my all-time favorites.

Having come across JOPW's music through a friend, I was expecting something fairly decent. I was thrilled by what I found. It's grown up music with a definite edge which leaves you wanting more. The lyrics are emotive and the music that accompanies them burrows into you and leads you in a direction you weren't expecting. She is also a charismatic woman who performs well live. Don't pass her by!

Having seen the striking Joan Wasser on a TV tribute to Sandy Denny, I immediately realised what I might have been missing and so ordered a trio of her albums. So far this is my favourite.
The opening title track is a captivating song, with a gorgeous melody sung with a huskily hypnotic intensity by Joan at her most imtimate. It`s unforgettable when she sings the line:

Be reckless with me

The rest of this excellent grower of a record is inventive, beautifully recorded and filled with songs of varying degrees of inspiration - I`m waiting for Joan to record that perfect album.
Anthony Hegarty sings to good effect on the superb I Defy, with a euphoric piano riff towards the end. The following Flushed Chest is cheekily spooky, and goes down a treat.
She`s backed throughout by a sympathetic band, and the whole thing has a haunting feel to it that, to some extent, shows Joan as the original talent she undoubtedly is.
On the other albums I`ve heard by this very likeable woman, there`s something missing, drowned in too much production and massed synths. I like to hear a more stripped down sound from her, that allows her songs room to breathe, much as she showed on that Sandy Denny tribute, which had her at her piano backed only by a small folk band. This superb album comes close to that ideal.
I admire the striking, beguilingly raunchy Joan a lot, and this is well worth listening to and living with, one of her best albums. I like it the more I listen to it...

I discovered Joan As Police Woman after hearing a track on Uncut Magazine's "Best of 2006" compilation CD. The song stuck in my head. So I ordered the whole CD. And I wasn't disappointed. Joan is like a conglomeration of Cat Power, Beth Orton, Hem, and a bunch of other female singers/groups. I can't really describe it beyond that. But the songs and lyrics are great. And the vocals are so ethereal. I'd recommend this CD highly. But buy it for less from a third-party seller rather than paying the high import price.
