Grace Potter is one of those artists I found quite by accident while surfing Amazon for something new. Like another reviewer here, I also bought all three Grace Potter and the Nocturnals CDs in reverse order and found that each one got better. Although that's really not fair as I haven't spent enough time to fairly judge the latest two as I got completely hooked on the CD Nothing But The Water.
Looking for more Grace Potter I then found this CD, Original Soul. The Nocturnals name is not attached but both Scott Tournet-guitar and Matt Burr-drums are here as on all four Grace Potter CDs.
All I can say is "BUY THIS CD". It's pricey, probably due to demand and a limited printing, but it's well worth whatever you end up paying. I haven't taken it out of my player since opening it days ago. It's an amazing mix of Blues, Soul, Gospel and good old Rock & Roll. Seems to be more of the B-3 on this CD (although Nothing But The Water has it's share) which I really like, but this one also has more background vocals which give it a fuller sound.
This is a lot like the music I grew up with in the early 70's but more timeless. I really think this is one of those CDs that I'll still be listening to years from now. Not a single bad song in the 13 track bunch.
Grace Potter has a powerful voice that can go from smooth and beautiful to raw, raspy and full of soul. She draws a lot of comparisons to Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt, which is impressive company, but she's a true original. She also plays a mean piano and B-3, and the combination is outstanding. Look no further, this is the real deal.
This is Grace'e first album and is definately the most soulful in my mind. Every song is orginal, but produced with a professionall sound that combines the Nocternals with a great studio Hammond B3 organist that made me think Grace Potter was going to be the next Bonnie Rait of blues.
I used to send the CD to friends that never heard of Grace Potter as a surprise gift and every one of them was thrilled to discover her. Too bad the CD is out of print now with ridicuous prices being quoated for used CD's. Bring back the Orginal Soul CD for your non-downloading fans. Mine is getting worn out!
Orignal Soul is Grace Potters first album and a very worthy one. I first discoverd Grace with her most current self titled album GP&N. It is a great classic rock album! However Orginal Soul is very heart felt soul music with an occansional hint of blues. All the songs are very well written, ( she is a great lyricist ) and recorded with a clean and smooth sound. My favorite tracks are in this order: 1. Hidden Superstion, 2. Gumbo Moon, 3. No Good, Mean Old, Lowdown Lover Man, 4. At your Request. If your only a classic rock fan, then you might not be into this album, but if your a hard core Potter fan then adding this album to your a collection is a must!! Note: This album is hard to find, so if you do, it might cost a lot more than the orignal retail price.
After hearing bits & pieces of songs on our local public radio station, we happened on her public television special. Soon after, we saw her & the Nocturals live and that was it. Original Soul is the third Grace CD we purchased. The whole CD flows very well and it was interesting to hear Grace with back-up singers. Her songwriting ability is unbelievable; such maturity for someone so young. This is definitely worth owning. Can't wait for the new CD in June!
All diehard Grace Potter fans need this album. While it's not something that I listen to much from day to day because it's not as engaging as her later stuff, it's so great to hear her music from years ago. That said, "Deliverance Road" is one of my favorite songs of hers, even now.
