I could never make up my mind whether Trevor Pinnock or Chris Hogwood had the better orchestra. But this is a pretty extensive set (6 CDs), and has all the major string works. These have all been individual discs in the 80s.
The Opus 8 concertos, that include the Four Seasons, is crammed into the end of CD 3, then finished on CD4. There is one concerto with oboe, but no other wind concertos. The orchestra has released some, but you have to seek those as out of print discs.
The other string concerto discs, La Cetra and so on, are well done and also feature cello. I'm happy with all of these. It is only the Four Seasons concertos that I will burn on a disc, with the first four plus two added from the rest of Opus 8. It does not really work for me as it is lined up here. The burned disc will fit in the box with the rest.
The tempos are not as break neck as some Continental orchestras of the 90s and 00's. But certainly not sleepy either.
Trevor Pinnock has a similar 7 disc box, Vivaldi: Stravaganza – 55 Concertos
(The English Concert and Trevor Pinnock). It has a variety of string and wind concertos. It's probably the better deal with the 7 discs, and is still available on CD and mp3.
