This ‘must see’ film is GRIPPING and COMPELLING!
WOW! What a magnificent film – not at all what I had anticipated.
This MUST SEE film is on so many levels and has so much to say about human nature.
The concept of using a TAXI RIDE to show various ‘cabbies’ and ‘fares’ in various cities around the world, so as to give an insight into the various cultures that inhabit each city, together with the people’s attitudes and behaviour towards each other is a MASTERSTROKE.
We see the contrast of the various cityscapes – the filthy depressing New York smothered in graffiti (a cry for help) contrasted against loneliness and desperation in a sturdy clean, well-planned Helsinki; the quirkiness of Paris; the prettiness of Rome; and the mash-up of shanty-town poverty and walled-in gated ‘prison’ residences for rich people that is Los Angeles.
Then we see the contrasts of the citizens – the meeting of cultures; the racism; and the ‘holier than thou’ bigotry.
The sub-text is straightforward – THERE IS NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE THAT CANNOT SEE - the ‘talent scout’ blind to what sort of life she was ‘enjoying’ (not); the female taxi driver whose eyes were wide SHUT and didn’t recognise an opportunity when it bit her on the nose; the ‘smarty pants’ who was blind to a clowns philosophical behaviour and blind to the needs of his sister-in-law; and the cabbie who picked up a blind ‘street-wise’ woman who saw much more than he ever saw or would EVER see AS HE DROVE DOWN 'ONE WAY' STREETS THE WRONG WAY - but for me, the most hard-hitting was the cabbie (the fabulous satirist Roberto Benigni) doing his very best to humiliate and insult a priest in every way that he could – reversing around the statue as the priest approached the car in an attempt to get in (sooo Chaplin); insulting the man’s beliefs and rank; being extremely offensive to the priest by talking about quirky sex; stopping to chat to two transvestite ‘street girls’ to disgrace and humiliate the priest; and deliberately driving in a manner that prevented the priest from taking his medication – totally blind to the tragedy happening to the priest.
But this went MUCH deeper – for when the priest dies of a heart attack – a heart attack that could have been avoided if the cabbie had been more COMPASSIONATE - we saw the CALLOUSNESS of the cabbie as he dragged the priest onto a park seat and left the priest there for someone to discover (can you imagine the horror of that?) rather than take the priest to his destination and summon assistance.
And finally, we have the cabbie who told his fares the story of his wife losing her baby - totally blind to the fact that the two Finns had been busy ripping off a poor unfortunate man and despite telling the cabbie about their ‘friends’ personal tragedy, they them selves had SERIOUSLY added to the poor fellows misfortunes and hardship.
Then we have the SONG by Tom Waits as the credits roll – a song that gives the MORAL of the film (look after each other and seize EVERY opportunity that comes along) – OMG we all wept buckets!
The two lines ‘I blew my CHANCES on the tide’ and ‘now all I have is A POCKETFUL OF FLOWERS ON MY GRAVE’ say it ALL!
As we go through life, we sometimes lose ourselves in VALUELESS ACTIVITY because it ‘feels good’ – never once examining the fact that the RIGHT thing to do always feels WRONG! This is because we are CONDITIONED from childhood to feel MORALLY SUPERIOR!
An example: working long hours is associated with VIRTUE and so people ‘get in early’ and ‘leave late’ (WITHOUT being paid extra) because it makes them feel ‘morally superior’ to the ‘lazy’ ones who show up late and leave early (the point made by the Finn who had lost his job – not because he was INCOMPETENT – but because he was always LATE.
My own code is that if you make things harder for yourself, you invariably make it harder for others too. If you can earn enough to exist by working part-time, you create more of the remaining hours to participate in pursuits that bring JOY and FULFILLMENT – the MEANING behind life.
I should warn you dear reader that THIS film is not an action-packed ‘in your face’ MODERN drama, where you are treated like a child and ‘spoon-fed’ everything as if you possessed the MIND of a child. This is a fabulous; compelling ‘slow-burn’ film that brings with it fantastic, beautifully told, haunting stories; wonderful humour and pathos; and deep contemplation afterwards!
When you watch this masterwork if YOU are blind to what this film is REALLY about, then I suggest that you throw your stone cold heart into the river.
If you DO see the depth that this fabulous film portrays, then I recommend TWO films that have something to say that will deeply move you. The first is the very moving ‘must see’ film called ‘TAXI DRIVER’ directed by Martin Scorsese released in 1976. The film - now fully restored and released on BluRay (available from Amazon) - depicts the abject loneliness and desperation of a cabby, and what it prompts him to do that has DEVASTATING consequences!
My second MUST SEE film is the inspirational classic film ‘LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL’ (featuring the amazing satirist Roberto Benigni and his wife and son). This inspired story – a story based upon Hoffman’s ‘Orpheus and the underworld’ – depicting the strength of the human spirit when put under extreme duress – starts out as a light and fluffy romance where we see ‘Guido’ win the heart (and mind) of his beloved ‘Princess’ as he sets out to create a beautiful life for his young family – but THEN – what happens NEXT when Guido is THRUST into a vile despicable ‘UNDERWORLD’ OF SATANIC EVIL will wrench EVERY emotion from within you.
This astonishing film won five Academy awards when it was first released, and it is now available on BluRay fully restored by Martin Scorsese – a man who is now devoting his life and resources to restoring classic ‘must see’ films such as ‘The Red Shoes’ – which features the artistry of the British cinematic genius JACK CARDIFF – the man who changed cinematography FOREVER!
In 'Life is beautiful' we see Guido go to the opera to see 'Opheus and the underworld' - and amidst a commotion of humour and pathos, we hear the beautifully haunting 'Barcarolle' (gondola ride) as 'Opheus' is transported into the 'underworld'.
Later - when Guido and his family find THEMSELVES in an inescapable 'underworld' we once again hear the strains of 'Barcarolle' (Song to the moon) - but what we SEE is VERY different! Have a box of tissues to hand!

I first saw this film during its initial release at a matinee on Charing Cross Road. Being from a small town, I was used to my art films being compressed to TV size. Thank my lucky stars that I saw this the way it was intended---in full, panoramic glory.
(Honestly, I gave a damn about Jarmusch at the time, but...Tom Waits did the soundtrack, so....well!)
The opener with Gena Rowlands and Winona Ryder was interesting, at best...I was watching with curiosity at the end. And then canme the New York ride with Armin Muehller-Stahl and Giancarlo Esposito, and I was enthralled...so much so that I didn't notice that I was reading subtitles when they went to Paris with the amazing actress Beatrice Dalle. I became aware during the Rome segment, where the hilarious dialogue went by so quickly I had to read just to keep up. It had the theater in stitches, so I know the rest of the audience was in the same boat. And then the finale in Helsinki. Words can't describe the humor and pathos that dominate here. It's brilliant, and must be seen. Until the final segement, Jarmusch had crafted a well done gentle (most of the time) comedy that focused on people being out of place. With the Helsinki segment, well, it casts a poignant feel over the whole film and forces you to rethink whatyou just saw...
It's brilliant (and also his most accessible film, not including Ghost Dog). Good luck with this wonderful movie.
PS> I understand why people don't like this review. It's all just my story, so let me tell you now. I love this move for the writing and for the brilliant performances my Armin Muehller Stahl and Roberto Bengini (How do you spell that anyway?). Not to mention Gena Rowlands and Beatrice Dalle. It's a fantastic movie founded on a great conceit, and well, I love it...hope you do too, and hope that this is more helpful than my CCR tale above.
