Bellissimo. Geniale. Originale

Insieme agli Hollies e agli Zombies genialità e originalità a profusione. Consigliatissimo!

A great addition to my Moody Blues collection
I've always been a fan of the Moody Blues. Ever since Nights in White Satin, in fact. I knew there was some history before what is now referred to as Moody Blues Mk II, i.e., the period with Denny Laine, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas... Their music differed from the prog rock route they took later, after Justin Hayward and John Lodge had joined, but the original Moodies did create some wonderful music. I consider The Magnificent Moodies, many songs of which I had never heard, as a prequel to the Classic (or Core) Seven, the first seven albums of the Moodies Mk II.

I've known the work of this era of the Moody Blues, in which Denny Laine was the guitarist and lead singer (with Clint Warwick on bass and vocals), alongside Mike Pinder (piano, vocals), Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica, vocals), and Graeme Edge (drums), for many decades. In fairness, I was one of the initially bewildered when I first discovered that material, having purchased the GO NOW album, as it was known in the US, thinking it would be somewhat along the lines of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED etc. But I soon took to this version of the band as well, except that there was never enough of them to grab onto like the later iteration of the group -- till now, that is.
And none of the previously issued material, most especially the single "Go Now," has ever sounded remotely as good as it does in this set. Digitized for the first time from the ORIGINAL master tapes (long missing or overlooked), this is the definitive and authoritative edition of this era of the band, in which they were closer to the Rolling Stones than to the Beatles. The crispness of the playing and the presence of all of the singing is phenomenal on the first disc -- "From The Bottom Of My Heart" brings chills down my spine it's so THERE in the playback (and one of the most extraordinary of British-invasion era singles). The second disc is filled with revelations, all previously unissued renditions (many significantly different from the versions we know) of seemingly familiar fare, laced with a few tracks new to us ("You Better Move On" a weird gospel piece built on the 23rd Psalm, etc.), the early band's surviving BBC sessions (live in the studio -- and boy did Graeme Edge love that bass drum!), plus remnants of a never-finished second album that may amaze even longtime fans. The BBC stuff consists of mostly familiar songs done in some unfamiliar ways, as far as the nuances and the recording textures (and microphone set-ups), plus interviews -- I love Edge's drumming on that rendition of "Go Now," and to have a live-in-the-studio version of "From The Bottom of My Heart," with a devastating vocal performance by Denny Laine, is almost worth the price of the set by itself (though the re-mastering of the familiar studio version is a powerful listening experience in and off itself); and a live version of "I've Got a Dream" (an overlooked jewel of their early library) is priceless.
The lost/unfinished second album was very much a transition out of their r&b roots into a more sophisticated brand of British invasion pop/rock -- "Sad Song" and most of the other originals here weren't likely to set the charts on fire, but the latter as part of an LP it was a good opener (and "We're Broken" has a great beat), and I think the band might have been able to chart with "Hang On To A Dream," had they had a chance to issue one of their recordings of it.
In all, it's well worth the fresh investment of money and time.
