This disc, along with Janson's previous disc of Symphonies Nos. 2 & 12, this disc is a great one to get to "finish" your collection if you lack the lesser-know symphonies.
The performances are clear-cut, and a bit on the dry-eyed side. This works well for the works presented here, though they may not for other Shostakovich symphonies. Symphony No.14 is obviously the main work here, and Jansons really throws some punches. This is a very 'vicious' reading of a vicious symphony.
Janson has, in my opinion, caught up with the competition in the 14th symphony: outdoing Haitink, and even Gramophone Guide's Swensen/Ondine disc.
So if you need Nos. 3 and 14 without getting a repeat, this is nothing to hesitate about!
