The follow-up to "Blue Cathedral" is an earthy, more accessible, and downright beautiful album. "Avatar" veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the Allmans to Quicksilver to Procol Harem to some insane Fela/Sun Ra/Crazy Horse hybrid, yet remains wholly Comets On Fire. Though they play cleaner and clearer, their firepower is evident and abundant.

What we have here is pretty simple: Men with beards. Blistering blues-rock riffs. Songs that refuse to die. On its fourth album, Comets on Fire takes the very foundation of rock 'n' roll (well, from the good years on) reheats it and serves it back up in gargantuan portions. We're talking the eight-minute solo-heavy opening track, which roughly approximates what it would have sounded like if the Stooges ever jumped on stage with the Grateful Dead. Produced just as well, too. Yes, this Santa Cruz quintet that shares member Ben Chasny with Six Organs of Admittance might occasionally qualify for jam-band status, but give them some credit. Phish could never come up with songs as euphorically ugly as "Lucifer's Memory" and "Hatched Upon the Age." --Aidin Vaziri

先頃リリースされたHowlin Rainとしての新譜も素晴らしかった、Ethan Miller率いるUS西海岸のスペーシーなサイケデリック・ハードロックバンドの4th。相も変わらず時代を錯誤しまくったステキな轟音を叩き出している。

60sサイケデリアの恍惚と、70sロックンロールの熱く、泥臭いグルーヴを醸成するパワフルな狂人ぶりはそのままに、今作では狂的に錯綜していたフィードバック・ノイズに変え、リヴァーヴがかったギター・リフ、ハモンド・オルガンの暖かな質感が巧みに組み込まれ、狂的な熱狂と深い夜の安息が同居する、昂揚と恍惚、安息が渾然となって押し寄せるような、素晴らしい音の饗宴が繰り広げられている。

Tr.1"Dogwood Rust "を始めとし、ほとんど全ての楽曲において自然発生的に沸き起こる、タフなリズム隊を基調とした屈強なセッションがとんでもなくカッコ良い。何とも言えぬ色香を放つEthanのボーカリゼーションもまた素晴らしく、暗闇の中を浮上するキーボードの旋律とともに強烈な磁場を形成している。逆巻く怒涛の音塊に引きずり込まれ、引き回され、脳内をぐっちゃぐちゃに攪拌されるこの快楽。前作からまた大きく一歩、階段を上がった感のある快作。

Un excelente trabajo de la banda americana Comets on Fire. Tenia este album descargado por Internet desde hace años pero de un tiempo acá prefiero los originales. No tiene desperdicio, mejor no ponerle etiquetas. ¡Muy recomendable!

----Shame about the illegible writing on the lyric sheet and back cover which is hard to read and decipher!
I could have denied this album a 5th star cos of this, but Avatar is far too good for me to do that. Dogwood Rust, the 1st track has a good guitar solo, and I just love the the way the next song (Jaybird) builds up into a furious guitar solo in the middle of the song. Lucifer's Memory is what I would call a psychedelic rock ballad (yes, there is such a thing). This guitar/piano led 70's sounding tune is one of those pieces that remain unheard to a lot of music fans, A pity really, as this is one of the best songs on Avatar. Can't believe that's the same band that recorded heavier tracks like Dogwood Rust and Holy Teeth. Holy Teeth is more up to date and this is where the band show their metal side. A strong Monster Magnet influence is present on that track.
For the best song on the album; well it has to be Sour Smoke.
This guitar/electric piano based instrumental piece is a classic and would be well suited for use as backing music for, say, sporting highlights for example. As far as I know, this song has never been used for any kind of advertising. It is one of the greatest instrumentals I have ever heard and its repetitive themes help keep it memorable. There are so many bands out there that deserve greater recognition than they have, and Comets On Fire are one of them.

Un disque énorme et fabuleux pour les amateurs de guitares qui vrillent et partent dans tous les sens.
Dès les premières secondes c'est un festival ininterrompu de musique psychédélique sur la base de guitares tuantes.
Les compositions en elles mêmes ne sont pas évidentes à détacher les unes des autres sur les premières écoutes mais on reste terrassé par le torpillage systématique de tous les titres.
On finit l'écoute éreinté par cet assaut sonore mais heureux de constater que de valeureux guerriers font perdurer l'esprit du rock psychédélique initié par jimi hendrix

This group has assimilated all the influences of great rock music from 1967 to 1972 and come up with a modern vision.Everyone from Frank Zappa to Quicksilver Messenger Service to Morgen to Guess Who to Procol Harum to Yes(plus hundreds of others) are touched upon by this eclectic recording then stretched to an almost Jazzlike sound.I call it pure genius and if any of the above mentioned bands are your idea of great music then I highly recommend this and all their other recordings.Too bad there's no other bands mining this territory, but I'm sure glad these guys are!
