Amazon
The third and final CD in a series that opens and closes a day in the life, Nightcrawler signals that Pete Yorn may have saved the best for last. The New Jersey-bred singer/songwriter remains heavy on the pop-sensical rock songs that have sketched out his young, but million-selling career. Remaining front-and-center, his animated vocal style--which can soothe during the quieter moments and vociferate on more stout efforts--is skillfully adept in conveying newfound inspirations that have snuck into the mix and broadened his sound. Sure, tracks like "Maybe I'm Right," "Bandstand in the Sky," "Policies" and the instantly accessible "For Us" remain directly in Yorn's wheelhouse. But as he tackles issues such as love, jealousy and immortality, crosses into genres like contemplative '60s folk ("Alive") and Spectorized R&B ("Georgie Boy"), and harmonizes with Dixie Chick Natalie Maines ("The Man"), Yorn keys the vault on his first trilogy, leaving only a guitar and open canvas in the path of his future. --Scott Holter

That said, don't expect nightcralwer to be like his previous work. It is definately a darker album then his others. Most of Yorn's songs require some serious listening to truely appreciate the effort that went into them though, most can be listened to without that kind of inspection.
There are some wonderful and powerfully driving songs such as "undercover," "for us" and mayber even "vampyre" (a very dark song that crescendos into an amazing evocative piece.) Many songs are, in my opinion good but quant. There are a few which are more to the folk music scene such as "the man," and "ice age." There are some which don't fit any particular category but are amazing and I personally think of "bandstand in the sky" which is a bizarre combination of a spiritual, a love song and even what I think is a referance to modern physics.
It is hard to compare this album to his other work since it so unique and different. It may or may not be the Pete Yorn that you like but I can recommend as a wonderful album.
'Nightcrawler' doesn't attempt to be like any of the other albums. It has its own sound - it's rockier, makes liberal use of overdubs, but in an interesting and successful way. There are songs on here which cover ground untrodden on either of the previous releases. Many of the songs do require several listens, but that is not to say that you must brainwash yourself into thinking they're good; on the contrary, the songs are complex and get better with age.
Of course, some songs are weaker; others, stronger - but because he's raised the quality bar, even the weaker songs are quite strong.
I'm happy to be the first person to review this album. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
