I Dream Of Jenny With The Bright Red Hair...
Taking into account the piety of the late George Harrison, it's somewhat ironic that a cover of the Traveling Wilbury's 'Handle With Care' should surface on this album. Clearly not the kind of person to worry about venturing out in a thunderstorm or fearing the wrath of God , Jenny Lewis makes no bones of her reservations concerning the existence of the big guy in the sky. This scepticism is made absolutely clear on the faith questioning 'Born Secular', a waltz tempo'd slice of gospel rounded off with a barrage of lolloping {southpaw?} drum fills that serve to underline her point. Recorded during a mid noughties hiatus from her regular band Rilo Kiley, Lewis formed a match made in heaven {more irony!} by inviting identical twins the Watson sisters to sing on her otherwise first solo outing.Never too upfront or overbearing, the twins apply just the right amount of colour to Lewis's canvas, but you'd certainly notice it if they wasn't there. A taste of the superlative harmonies to come is provided by the short accapella opener 'Run Devil Run' and admirers of the recent Case / Lang / Viers/ collaboration should head this way. There's a healthy dose of cynicism at large on the alt-country hoe down of 'The Big Guns' and the barnyard swing of 'The Charging Sky', both of which manage to tease in some bible belt baiting, and as Lewis states on the former,"I've won hundreds at the track but I aint betting on the afterlife". But it's not all fatalistic pragmatism going on here, and the empowering 'Rise Up With Fists' takes a bold, uplifting stand against philandering ministers and hypocrisy in general. There's a moment where Lewis sings "Thought I saw you in Vegas, it wasn't pretty but she was..." {pregnant pause} then the twins interject with ..."not your wife"; Absolute genius! From the laid back introspection of 'Happy' to the jaunty Americana of 'You Are What You Love', the strength of Lewis's songwriting is astounding. So when she delivers 'Melt Your Heart' you just know that it's going to do what it says on the tin, and this plea for humility will surely melt yours. But it's the title track's captivating narrative that will keep you coming back for more. The tale of love, scandal and revenge that is 'Rabbit Fur Coat' contains great story telling, making the legend of this coveted garment and centrepiece of the song one I'll never tire of. The curious addition of 'Handle With Care' never veers from the original. Harrison's melodic guitar lines remain in place, as do the vocal swaps, but I couldn't help noticing that the word "fobbed" has been replaced with another 'F'- word. In keeping with the sentiment of that song, 'It Wasn't Me' thumbs a nose at the superficiality of the music biz, fame, and her old bugbear the church, so it's a wonder she's never been on the receiving end of a Beatles / Dixie Chicks style backlash. Politely staying in the background is a large cast that includes Jonathan Rice and Conor Oberst amongst others, but this album is the triumph of Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins make no mistake about it. Unleashed into the world in January 2006, 'Rabbit Fur Coat' arrived in time to banish those post Christmas winter blues and divert those souls still trying to breathe life into the Barat / Doherty pantomime. Soon those very people would be beating a path to the door of the Arctic Monkeys, but for me this was the album of that very year and is certainly in the noughties top ten.

It's Will Be Really Hard for Jenny Lewis to Top This Album

It's obvious that a great deal of love and devotion went into the making of Rabbit Fur Coat. From the iconic cover picture with Jenny and the Watson Twins echoing one of the scarier scenes from The Shining to the incredibly beautiful photos in the liner notes which show Jenny at her most beautiful and vulnerable.
And then there is the music. A perfect balance of melody, harmony and lyric writing that stands as the best work of Jenny Lewis' life and one of the best albums of the decade.
After the vocal workout of Run Devil Run things really get moving with The Big Gun which truly shows off Jenny Lewis vocal prowress. Hearing the Watson twins harmonize behind her makes you feel that these 3 women have been singing together their entire lifes. It's not true of course but the chemistry that they have is magical.
Rise Up With Fists is one of Jenny Lewis' greatest songs. It combines everthing I love about her. Her perfect voice beautiful at both the upper and lower registers of her range. The sense of humor and sarcasm and honesty of her songwriting. When she and the Watson's sing It was not pretty but she was...(not your wife) it always makes me chuckle..such a perfect lyric.
Happy is the first of two absolutely gorgeous ballads that grace this album. The way her crystal clear voice melts into the soft accoustic strumming and the ever so subtle electric guitar feedback is magical. This is truly an unforgettable performance. One of the loveliest songs I've ever heard.
Melt Your Heart is the second classic ballad from this album. Like alot of her songs it is melancholy and hopeful at the same time. I've spent many a night in the dark laying down listening to this song.
The rest of the album is equally strong. You Are What You Love is an uptempo rumination on co dependency. Rabbit Fur Coat is a folk song about class discrimination and upward mobility set to a waltz tempo. Born Secular has a gospel vibe which fits in nicely with the rest of the album.
I have to give alot of credit to the Watson Twins at all because without their harmonizing this album would not have been as good.
The thing I love about Jenny Lewis' music is how simple she keeps it. It's not based on anything other than great music, honest and original lyrics and one of the most beautiful voices in rock. This album is timeless, you'll be able to listen to it in 20 years and it won't sound dated at all.
