A Forgotten Saxophone Master

Ike Quebec is one of the most underrated saxophonists I think in the history of jazz. His life was cut way too short. There's no telling what he could have done, but at least we have some very memorable recordings of Quebec, which includes this 1961 recording cut for Blue Note Records.
"It Might As Well Be Spring" capture Quebec in fine form with Freddie Roach on organ, Milt Hinton on bass, and Al Harewood on drums. For those of you who don't like organ, especially in jazz music, should give this recording a spin, because what we have here is unobtrusive and lyrical, which is not like jazz organ. It's a healthy alternative to the style of organists like Jimmy Smith and Larry Young. Roach's approach was more subtle and it somehow makes this recording just sound right.
This is a group that plays with a low burning fire under them and after awhile you'll start to smell what's really cooking: this beautifully played music. Highly recommended.

Sparse, delicate yet detailed with rich tones and soaring punchy instruments, nearly a 5*

CD Review: Blue Note RVG edition 2006
This is a lovingly constructed session which is well recorded and yet deceptively simple. The bass and drums are minimal but have a delicate touch and tone. The organ has punch and power. The tone is very good and fills the spaces in this sparse elegant recording.
I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.
• Clarity – very good
• Channel separation – very good
• Channel balance – very good
• Sound Stage – very wide open, detailed, limited projection but very airy and spacious
• Distortion – non audible
• Compression – very good volume range i.e. soft to loud, not restrained or constrained
• Atmosphere – almost church, gospel or club like at the end of the night when winding down, personal and intimate
• Bass – low frequencies – the bass and drums are very sparse but sound good. The space in between is filled by the Hammond organ which rises and plummets with very good tone
• Treble – high frequencies – the sax is rich and resonant, beautifully clear with an almost breathy tone balanced by the organ which jabs and punches in the spaces
• Vocals - none
As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.
Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

Suspicious Counterfeit CD (CD-ROM)
2018年11月13日にドイツでレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This is my view of this product, not of the quality of music:
Have received this item this afternoon. I strongly suspect that this is not original product, indeed it could be a counterfeit CD from suspicious sources that is being sold by Amazon.de unknowingly.
Below are the various indications that my doubt based on:
1. The printing of the booklet are of second rate. Fonts are misaligned , colors are off, the photo reproduction was poor, cheap paper, and the booklet are folded inside out, with the album cover facing inside, when it arrived.
2. The CD labelling. The usual RVG logo on it was printed in flat color, this is rather unusual because the rest of my Blue Note RVG version cds' logos were printed with silver and blue effect. This effect is gone on the cd I received.
I hope Amazon.de can look into such matter as this is happening to my one of my other purchases from Amazon.de too, "The Hank Mobley: Quintet: RVG Remastered Edition"
