As growing pain albums go--and third albums are notoriously difficult--this one's a stunner. The lack of a single song as immediately catchy and inspired as "Ban Marriage" is a bummer on first listen, as is the absence of overly sexually-explicit imagery in every single tune. But the Toronto-based indie-pop orchestral group, masterminded by guitarist/painter/singer-songwriter Joel Gibb, is not shooting for mainstream appeal here. After all, the melodies and rhythms are more complex and varied, the lyrics more evocative and oblique, and the group still seems to be very gay. The Hidden Cameras are just a little bit weirder now. The delivery is as joyous as ever, and the whole thing is still vaguely reminiscent of an overreaching Christian band camp's performance of Godspell. "Heji," for instance, sounds like Lee Ranaldo jamming along to the soundtrack to Xanadu. It turns out that its not a bad thing at all. The same can be said for the rest of the album, which gets even better with each listen. --Mike McGonigal

I absolutely loved this CD. The music mixes so many great sounds and vibes. The lyrics are sometimes sexy, sometimes silly, but always match the tone of the music perfectly. Fee Fie is my favorite on this CD.

The Hidden Cameras are a gorgeous, irreverant cross between The Proclaimers and early REM. Man ALIVE! I love them. They are infectiously beautiful, tunefully gorgeous and brilliantly fabulous! Camp as Christmas and dirty as sin - how can you not tap your foot and love them. I want to hug Joel to death. What an awesome LP, every song could be a single. I want to give them a thousand million stars.

Good CD. The flavor of the Hidden Cameras music is undeniably palatable. The tunes are just fun (despite lyrics that might be considered to be "at the far end of some spectrum or another"). If you'd like a couple more melodies to carry around in your head whether you like it or not...you'll have to have to add this CD to your Hidden Cameras' collection. I couldn't give it 5-stars 'cause I liked their last CD just a little more (I suspect their fist CD is quite "catchy" as well). There are songs on this disc that I wouldn't have wanted to miss, though. It's good summertime music and also good music to keep your mood "up" in the more dreary months of the year (try not to get hung up on the words and meaning that accompanies the music).

I absolutely adored 'The Smell of Our Own' The Smell of Our Own and so probably wanted this to be the same, which I admit is a tad daft. This is a further develoopment of Joel Gibbs genius and is an excellent album by any standards, I only gave 4 stars as it is not the 100% rollercoaster that his first work was.

I agree that 'Lollipop' has a resonance with Plastic Bertrand and that there are not the towering harmonies that have appeared elsewhere, still there is an abundance of melodies and ideas that are far away enough from the main stream to not appear on Google earth (metaphorically). 'Fee Fie' is beautiful and 'She's Gone' is my current favourite, there is an avant garde esque instrumental in 'heji' and more thought in the lyrics than comes in an entire chart run down, no rhyming 'dove' with ,love' etc. n 'Heaven turns to' could come from a West End musical and it would be easy to get some singles from here but that would be missing the point. And all in all I am enjoying it more with every listen so am actually highly recommending, shame about the lack of water sports directions though.
