2006 album from this Progressive Metal band, the first album to feature new vocalist Tommy Karevik. Seventh Wonder was formed in 2000 by bass player Andreas Blomqvist, guitarist Johan Liefvendahl and drummer Johnny Sandin after their previous band fell apart. The music turned towards the progressive side of metal and as the band was joined by keyboard player Andreas Söderin late 2000, the brilliant Karevik (ex: Vindictiv) was spotted and he joined the band in 2005. The album has been mixed and mastered by legendary Tommy Hansen (Helloween, T.N.T) and engineered by Daniel Flores (Mind's Eye) and Seventh Wonder. Lion Music.

FATES WARNING

So how does this release sound in 2015? Not surprisingly and quite simply ... vital! Compared to the likes of Cloudscape, Circus Maximus and of course Dream Theater, the style is clearly melodic progressive metal - but Karevik brings an AOR meets power metal quality to SW which I find incredibly refreshing. These guys don't twist and turn the rhythm like some of the more technical bands, but there is a professional quality to the music that demands your attention and it has always surprised me that they haven't garnered a wider audience/demand (aside from Prog/Power) here in the States. In particular, I love the way the keys/piano play a vital role in a manner similar to Shadow Gallery - the final track "Pieces" featuring Karevik's powerful voice accompanied by piano and synth. And the interplay of the bass, guitars and keys is very reminiscent of Symphony X. In that regard, a song by song analysis would make this review too long, but suffice it to say there is much here to enjoy. From the amazing melodies to the driving rhythms and the crunchy riffs these songs still sound great this many years later, especially at high volume! While all of the Seventh Wonder material is solid, Waiting In The Wings is essential listening for fans of progressive melodic metal and well worth revisiting repeatedly.
